Things that go bump in the night

Students are exploring the formal elements in art through portraiture. Part of this has involved understanding tone which the students have explored through expressive charcoal drawings inspired by Halloween masks.

After some gruelling sports trials we were able to select our first group of School 21’s indoor athletes. The teams were made up of 6 girls and 6 boys who competed in the Newham borough indoor sports hall athletics event at Cumberland School. There were 10 schools com-peting in total and School21 kept their nerve to show true grit and determination. The overall result is part of a league and we will be back again in January for the second round. Stand out performances in this heat go to: Girls relay team (Christivie Massera, Eylin Bastidas, Carine Brown, Zakiya Alom Fahmida) - 1st Boys relay team (Callum Thurlow-Lewis, Sulaiman Matin, Reon Elliston, David Sertvietis) - 3rd Chritivie Massera - 2 lap 1st, 5.38m standing triple jump Zakiya Alom Fahmida 2 lap 2nd Carine Brown - 4 lap 1st, 5.25m shot putt Sonida Ceraj/Eylin Bastidas - 8 lap 3rd Reon Elliston- 2 lap 2nd Xavier Binns - 5.85m Shot putt David Sertvietis - 7.24m triple jump

This term has seen the launch of

our new student leadership award.

Students have four challenges that

they must complete and evidence

in order to achieve the bronze

award. During coaching time stu-

dents are looking at what qualities a

good leader needs and how to use

the voice in a variety of leadership

and presentational situations. The

first challenge we are focusing on is

eloquence. Students will be voicing

their opinions on a range of issues

that they have researched in

school, planning presentations to

address these issues, and taking

part in school council and depart-

mental consultation groups. Our first group of primary school learning leaders

have successfully helped out in the reception classes and have received a lot of

positive praise for their mature, caring and flexible thinking skills.

Student Leadership Award launched

Students have been looking exceptionally smart in their School21 PE kits so far. However, now that the weather is starting to turn colder can I please remind students that they can wear a plain black sports sweat-er, hooded top or rain jacket of their choice. They may also wear plain black gloves and black beenie hat if they wish. Small logos only are acceptable. Could I also remind students that if they want water they must bring it in a plastic bottle and have it with them from the start of the lesson.

Outdoor PE kit reminder

As you may know, some of us were invited to take part in a national contest on Sumdog, and guess what? I came as one of the top students. coming 47th. Yes that's right, 47th! All it took was determination as I didn't want to let down Miss Futo, Sugarwell and most of all the whole school. Playing and playing until I got tired, I played for 3 hours, I improved a lot by answer-ing my questions quickly and learning new top-ics. Now I've achieved something great. What have you achieved? By Jathusa Selvarajan, Sug-arwell.

We, at School 21, had a visit from one amazing scientist called Dr Griffiths who is a professorial scientist. She taught us in-credible things like how vitamin C gets absorbed into the body and how it takes up to 15 years to develop a new medicine and costs as much as 5 jumbo jets to make! We had the chance to use new chemicals and found out that taking vitamin C tablets does not always help your body because they dissolve faster in your stomach than in your intestine. It was great to meet someone who does research for their real job and it taught us about what real scientists do. by Sulaiman Martin
