Combining his particular
brand of poetry and storytell-
ing, Frank said the bears started
speaking to him as he enjoyed
his early morning coff ee before
heading off to his ‘day job’ of
psychiatric nurse.
“I have recently commenced
semi-retirement, but it had been
my habit to get up very early and
go to the bakery, make a little
quiet space in my head before
my shift and even do a little writ-
ing,” he said.
“The bears are a marketing
item and at times sit together
en-masse, with the staff arrang-
ing them and changing the dis-
plays almost daily depending on
the number of bears they have
or what they want to highlight
that day.
“I started really noticing the
bears and took pictures of them
which led to me having little
conversations with them, their
personalities shone through and
they started telling me about
themselves and the high regard
they have for Tom (O’Toole,
founder of the Beechworth Bak-
ery).
“I incorporated it into a series
and my wife Leanne organised
the layout for a picture book.
“I was lucky last year dur-
ing COVID that my work was
guaranteed and my workplace
wasn’t really aff ected, apart
from being like everyone else
- scared and uncertain about
what it all meant, and missing
seeing people socially.
“It stopped a lot of the mo-
mentum and work I had put into
meeting the local people my
books were reaching but there
was a bright side - I got to spend
time looking at the 40 years’
worth of writing archive I’d built
up and turn it into book form.
“I have enough for a 20 or
30 poetry book collection which
includes everything from fi res,
to COVID as I experienced it, to
say Volume 15 which focuses on
works from 1990.
“I think there will be a lot of
stories shared that come out of
the COVID pandemic.
“Personally I have managed
okay, but more social people
seem to have suff ered and don’t
feel like their normal selves so
I think the last year will have a
profound diff erence for a lot of
people.
“At home I can work at my
desk, providing the material is
mine to work with and get lost
in that.
“I get lost in creativity land.”
In addition to the Beechworth
Bakery Bears picture books and
going through his archives, Frank
has created another poetry pic-
ture book entitled Voices in the
Trash, which grew out of his visit
to the Daylesford Mill Market.
“There’s a huge antique barn
full of trash and treasure from
mannequins to dwarves to col-
ourful door handles.
“I fell in love with them all
and wanted to capture them
in a unique way, and that’s
when Voices in the Trash came
about.”
Frank said that he hasn’t put
an age limit on Voices in the
Trash or the Beechworth Bak-
ery Bears book as they can be
enjoyed by people of all ages.
“They are stories about soft,
cuddly teddy bears and unique
trash and treasure items,” he
said.
“I just want people to read
and enjoy them,” he said.
For those interested in famil-
iarising themselves with Frank’s
work, Pebbles to Poems is
available on Smashwords for
free and introduces readers to
extracts of his fi rst six poetry
collections.
