Newsletter Coldwater Fisheries Society of India

About CFSIColdwater Fisheries Society of India was launched in the year 2012 under the president ship of Late Dr. P.C. Mahanta, Former Director, ICAR-DCFR, Bhimtal. The society was formed with an objective to implement and expand the research and developmental activities for the benefit of various stakeholders of coldwater fisheries sector of India. The society was registered under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 (Reg. No. 128/2012-2013) and the first executive committee was formed with its headquarter at ICAR-DCFR, Bhimtal. At present, the society has registered 100 life members comprising of scientist, academicians, entrepreneurs, students and farmers all over the country.

Launching of CFSI Coldwater Fisheries Society of India was launched on 5th November’ 2012 on the occasion of Silver Jubilee Seminar organized at ICAR-DCFR, Bhimtal, inaugurated by Dr. S.P. Iyer, Former Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore in presence of Late Dr. P.C. Mahanta, the first President of the Society.

Highlights on coldwater fisheries

(1) GIS application for fisheries resource assessment and managementGeographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based tool for mapping and analyzing spatial data. GIS technology integrates common database operations such as query and statistical analysis with the unique visualization and geographic analysis benefits offered by maps. GIS is considered to be one of the most important new technologies, with the potential to revolutionize many aspects of society through increased ability to make decisions and solve problems.

Besides the advancement of technology during last few decades, the population has also grown manifold increasing exploitation of the natural resource. Gradual elimination of resources without replacement forced the mankind to explore alternative resources on the earth’s surface. Applications of GIS in fisheries is so diverse that relevant data can be collected, co-located and displayed in a way as to enhance understanding beyond that which existed before the exercise. Mapping of fishery resources provide pithy information and could be used as prejudice planning for sustainable fishery resource management in Indian Himalayan region. Physico-chemical parameters of water influence the aquatic ecosystem as well as biology of fish; these parameters can be used for demarcating level of productivity of the reservoirs based on the criteria. Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production sector in the world significantly to poverty alleviation and food security in the disadvantaged area. GIS can be used in selecting suitable sites for aquaculture for effective resource planning and management.

First CFSI Fellowship conferred to Dr. K.L. SehgalThe Coldwater Fisheries Society of India conferred the first prestigious CFSI Fellowship in 2012 to Dr. K.L. Sehgal by Late Dr. P.C. Mahanta, as CFSI member for his unswerving dedication and meritorious service in the field of fisheries science throughout the years.

(2) Nutritional benefits of coldwater fishes At this era of nutritional challenges like burgeoning lifestyle diseases, and the corresponding rising of concept of functional food, fish is getting a prime attention among health conscious consumers. Because fish, among sources of animal protein, contains best combination of nutrients and bioactive components like long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC-PUFAs; eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA and docosahexaenoic acid, DHA), vitamin D, B12 and A, selenium, iodine, iron, zinc, choline, taurine, etc. However, depending on their typical food and feeding habit, each fish have their unique nutrient makeup and functionality. Further, among the fishes from different habitat and environment, coldwater fishes are unique in their nutrient make up and functionality. Until date, among Himalayan fishes, nutrient compositions of mahseers (Tor putitora and Neolissochilus hexagonolepis), hill carps (Labeo dero, L. dyocheilus and L. pangusia) and snow trouts (Schizothorax spp.) have been evaluated for nutrient composition and functionality. Among the components of biochemical composition, protein and lipid are nutritionally more important; the respective values of protein and lipid in hill fishes, like any other carps, fall within the ranges of 16-20 and 2-8 g/100 g of edible parts. Among all coldwater fishes, snow trout followed by chocolate mahseer (N. hexagonolepis) are the best in term of n-3/n-6 fatty acid ratio. Among various species of snow trouts, S. labiatus is nutritionally superior with best quality (in terms of protein, leucine, phenylalanine, isoleucine, lysine, threonine, MUFAs, n-3 fatty acids, calcium, phosphorus and zinc, and lowest contents of TAG, and n-6/n-3 ratio), and S. richardsonii is the second best. Overall, all coldwater fishes are good in one way or the other in their nutrient load and dietary nutrient contribution potential, although

they have some level of interspecies differences. However, compared to other protein sources, they all are the potent sources of vital nutrients and bioactive compounds, what modern consumers are seek in present day food market.

(3) Disease scenario in hill aquacultureWith advancement in fish health management practices, occurrences of diseases of viral, bacterial, parasitic & fungal origin are documented in hill aquaculture. Aquaculture sites in hills of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand & North-East regions are extensively surveyed and microbial samples collected are analyzed periodically to detect pathogenic microbes in coldwater. Tracking of viral signature for infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN), viral hemorrhagic septicaemia (VHS), spring viremia of carp (SVC), epizootic hematopoietic necrosis (EHN) & infectious hematopoietic necrosis (IHN) are not so far reported in coldwater aquaculture practices of our country. A virulent strain of Aeromonas hydrophila, RTMCX1 (JX390650) is isolated from a deep ulceration marked in caudal peduncle region of dorsal aspect of adult rainbow trout infecting 20-35% of the stock. The mortality among infected trout is recorded within 3-4 weeks after appearance of ulcer. Enterococci are persistently recovered from different tissue samples of moribund fingerlings & adult rainbow trout collected from trout farms of Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim & Uttarakhand. 20-25% of rainbow trout stock weighing 150-300g are observed with eye infections (unilateral, bilateral & endothalmic) in

farming conditions. The initial symptom is marked with hemorrhagic eye leading to corneal opacity. In advance stages of infections, conditions of unilateral & bilateral blindness are also raised in 65% of infected trout population. Four strains of Lactococcus garvieae (GenBank accession no: KM 604701, KM 604702, KM 604703 and KM 604704) are purified and characterized from rainbow trout with corneal opacity in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Virulent Pseudomonas koreensis, TPEB02, (JX390644) is recovered from golden mahseer eye, demonstrating corneal opacity. Corneal hypertrophy (3-5% of the stock) is observed in fingerlings of chocolate mahseer, Neolissochilus hexagonolepis (McClelland, 1839) from Uttarakhand, India. Orange pigmented gram negative, rod shaped Chryseobacterium scophthalmum (KM822770) in infected gills of golden mahseer, Tor putitora, is identified from Bhimtal Lake. Occurrence of argulosis is observed in stocks of Schizothorax richardsonii (50%) and Tor putitora (25%) reared in cage culture unit of Bhimtal Lake, Uttarakhand. The incident of white spot disease (60% of the stock) is recorded in high altitude race-ways reared snowtrout, Schizothorax richardsonii in Uttarakhand. Saprolegniasis in Tor putitora, Oncorhynchus mykiss, Schizothorax richardsonii and other coldwater fish are recorded in culture practices, when there is an abrupt change in water temperature during winter months. Saprolegnia diclina and Saprolegnia parasitica infections are remained more common in winter months. A combination of good fish health management and husbandry practice may control the chance of occurrence of diseases in hill aquaculture.

(4) Recreational fisheries and eco-tourism Mahseer is a large bodied potamodromous freshwater fish endemic to Asian rivers is flagship species of considerable economic, recreational and conservation interest. Mahseer belong to three genus namely Tor (Gray), Neolissochilus (McClelland) and Naziritor (McClelland). However, genus Tor constitutes the bulk of mahseer and there are different opinions of the species of mahseer available under different genus

(Sarma et al., 2016). Mahseer is most popular game fish amongst anglers in India and known to be the toughest fighter amongst freshwater sports fish and is undisputed king of India freshwaters. Since angling was favourite pursuit of the British, Indian mahseer attracted the attention of anglers world over. Angling is done with a rod, reel, line, hooks and any one of a wide range of baits. The common methods for capturing mahseer is fly fishing, spoon fishing and bait fishing. The lakes of Kumaon hills were stocked by the fish by Sir H. Ramsay during 1858 (Walker, 1888) for sport fishing. Upland lakes in Uttarakhand such as Nainital, Bhimtal, Sattal, Naukuchiatal, Khurpatal, Shyamtal, Deoriatal, Hemkund, Roopkund, Kagbhushandital, Kedartal, Sahastratal situated at an altitude ranging from 1200 to 5050 m are some of the best spots were one can watch this fish at present. Today, recreational fishing is considered a part of ecotourism which is defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education”. Since 1980s ecotourism has been considered a critical endeavor by environmentalists, so that future generations may experience destinations relatively untouched by human intervention. Moreover, ecotourism has positive indirect and direct consequences towards the conservation of mahseer and provides opportunity of income-generation for local communities and activism among travellers, making them more passionate towards nature and its resources. Recreational or sport fishing has become one of the most sought after adventure tourism activities in India, which has accounted for 2.7 % growth in tourism sector and providing 31 million jobs in India. Today foreign tourist arrival has grown at an average of 4.5 % contributing foreign exchange earnings to the tune of INR 1,35,193 crore in 2015 (Annual Report, Ministry of Tourism, 2015).

(5) Coldwater endemic fishes of northeastern region of india Endemic fishes are among those which inhibits in a particular geographical location, proliferate in a region or place and are common in that defined area. The coldwater aquatic resources in terms of streams, rivers, reservoirs and lakes in the Northeastern region of India is very rich in the world in terms of biodiversity and is the convergence of two important fish biodiversity hotspots in the world, the Eastern Himalayas and the Indo-Burma region. ICAR-Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research, Bhimtal, Uttarakhand has recorded the occurrence of 138 fish species categorized under 54 genera, 18 families and 6 orders, endemic in the region. Of these, the maximum recorded fish endemism was in Manipur in river Irrawaddy and Chindwin basins (91 species), followed by Assam in Brahmaputra and Barak valley (29 species), Arunachal Pradesh (26 species), Meghalaya (23 species), Nagaland (14 species), Mizoram (8 species) in Kolodyne river system, Tripura (7 species) and Sikkim (5 species). In view of economic importance, 58 species were found to have food value, 43 species of ornamental value, 27 species with both ornamental and food value and 10 species have both food and sports value. According to IUCN status (2016), 7.97% of the assessed species are placed in the endangered category, 24.64% vulnerable, 10.14% near threatened, 0.72% critical, 34.06% least concern, 18.84% data deficient and 3.62% under not evaluated. Many of these endemic fishes can be considered as potential candidate species for freshwater aquaculture in hilly regime, which in turn will help in species propagation, generating livelihood for the people and to conserve germ plasm from extinction.

(6) Snow trout fishery in Arunachal PradeshStudy was conducted in three snow-fed tributaries viz, river Dirang chu (27.3537N, 92.2506E), river Sangti (27.3517N, 92.2681E) and river Tenga (27.2186N, 92.43E) of Kameng drainage in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh in the Eastern Himalayas. The topography of the basins is hilly with steep slopes, situated at an altitude ranging from 1411-1512m msl. All these rivers in their total route confluences with many major and minor tributaries and carries all of the discharge to Kameng river system, a right bank tributary of river Brahmaputra. The snow trouts are

known as Nga by local dialect and accounts for major and important part of the capture fishery in the region. The species of snow trout identified by morphometric characters and meristic counts are recorded as Schizothorax richardsonii, Schizothorax plagiostomus and Schizothorax labiatus. The average length of snow trouts was recorded as 24.16 ± 6.17 cm with an average catch size in weight of 161.2 ± 102.22 kg during the investigation. The major gear employed for selective catching of the snow trouts are the noose and line method with an average catch per unit effort (CPUE) of 1.8-2.2 kg/per hour/gear. The physicochemical variables (water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, resistivity, conductivity, salinity and ORP) and nutrient variables (ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, sulphate, chloride, magnesium, calcium, iron, cadmium, zinc, copper, alkalinity and hardness) of water analyzed at each river site were within the optimum level concluding a good health of the water body and conducive for the abundance of the snow trout.
