Chapter Appendix Section

During the 2012-2013 Academic Year, we had a new challenge in maintain the legacy of which has been

characterized the UPRM SACNAS chapter over six years with a new chapter advisor and freshman officers.

However the effort and dedication through this year has been satisfactory for all of us because we reach the goals

we set at the beginning.

1) Provide to students information about scholarships, internships and graduate schools to minority groups.

a. To maintain the communication with our members and achieved the goals established in the

mision and vision of the CoHemis-UPRM SACNAS Chapter, the officers has the commitment to

expose the active members different ways of development in science careers.

b. We used the facebook page and the email to connect with our members through this social

network, posting the opportunities avaiable and the instructions for application.

c. Also, we have several meetings in which the officers and active members spoke about the

experience that a student will have if apply for any fellowship or internship as well as different

tips for an application success. We promote the sharing of knowledge between colleagues.

and her experience in this Summer Internship in MSU. This activity had the goal to share the experience with students and motivate them to

apply for an internship.

2) Recruitment: We made great efforts to the new members to be part of our chapter and members of

SACNAS National. However we encourage in several meetings in second semester to apply for a travel

grant to attend the 2013 SACNAS National Conference to be held in San Antonio, TX and be part of the

SACNAS family who want to develop students in their professional career.

c. Question 3C from the Annual Report:

i. Tips to write a Personal Statement (Jan. 29, 2013) Speaker: Héctor J. Esparra-Escalera First meeting, apart of mention some events during the semester, the speaker interact with them members how to write a personal statement to apply for an internship, scholarship or conference, sumarized in 5 points: How to attract the evaluator in the first paragraph, experience, technical skills, briefly why you’re interested in, and why you should be selected.

ii. 2013 SACNAS National Conference Info Session. (Feb. 12, 2013) Speaker: Dr. Nayda G. Santiago-Santiago (Chapter Advisor) She spoke briefly about the mission and history of SACNAS, because this year is the 40th anniversary of the organization. Nevertheless, she answered several questions about what is the purpose of the national conference, how is divided, how many attend of each branch of science, and the environment in San Antonio, TX; also talked about the requirements to apply for a travel scholarship to attend the National Conference this year. Definitely this activity should be repeated every spring semesters to provide updated information about the conference programming.

iii. Science & Tecnology, Innovation Through Research (Apr. 16, 2013) Simposium and Poster Presentation prepared by CoHemis-UPRM SACNAS Chapter and IEEE UPRM Branch (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) with the collaboration of the Association for Students in Biotechnology (AEBI) which took place in Luis De Celis building of the UPRM campus. In this activity, 43 students from biology, biotechnology, chemistry and engineering presented their research. This was the biggest event of the academic year. Fifteen judges participated in the evaluation of these presentations. To commemorate the anniversary of the first SACNAS Regional Meeting in Puerto Rico, we set ourselves the challenge of making the first symposium of Science & Technology. Thanks to this activity, students of science want to join our chapter next semester. Continuity should be given to strengthen the union of STEM; we need more support next time to make this wish a reality. Total attendance: 43 presenters + 15 judges + 16 staff + 22 hearing people = 96
