ACTIVE MINISTERS

MARIAN RUTHE WOODLE DYER

February 11, 1959 - March 29, 2012

Marian Ruthe Woodle Dyer, the daughter of Clarence Marion and Hattie Ruthe Woodle, was born in Chester, South Carolina, February 11, 1959. She passed from this earth peacefully on March 29, 2012, and moved into her heavenly Father’s presence. Her life spanned fifty-three years, with five as a Minister in the South Carolina Conference. Introduced at a blind date ten months prior, Marian married a young sailor, Mikell D. Dyer, February 16, 1980. They shared their immense love by providing life to a beautiful daughter on December 10, 1993 and using her ancestral heritage named her Adrian Ruthe. She is a very active member and Youth Leader of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Pomaria. At the age of thirty-five, in 1994, Marian received her calling into the ministry of the church. Within a span of fourteen years of her academic life, being a wife, mother, and college student she attended Macon State College and Columbia College obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree, in 2004, graduating with honors.

Pressing on in her calling from her Lord, Marian attended Erskine Theological Seminary and obtained her Master of Divinity Degree in 2008, again with honors.

At the age of forty-eight, in 2007, Marian began her pastorate at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. Always with a welcome smile and compassionate spirit she considered it a blessing to have been at this church at this time of her adult life. She was not only loved and respected by the members of Mt. Pleasant Church, but also by several other denominations of clergy as she served her community within the Newberry County Ministerial Association.

An evangelist from birth, Marian loved The Lord and lived by example never wavering from His guidance.

“Well done my good and faithful servant.”

SANDRA HARDIN HATCHELL

February 29, 1956 – April 5, 2012

The Rev. Dr. Sandra Hardin Hatchell, 56, wife of Ralph Eugene Hatchell, Jr. of Pawley’s Island, S.C., went home to be with the Lord and join her waiting loved ones on Thursday, April 5, 2012, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Rev. Dr. Hatchell was born the daughter of Delmer Elsworth Hardin and Aileen Yoakum Hardin on February 29, 1956, in Wichita, Kansas. She was a United States Army Veteran and an Ordained Minister of the United Methodist Church. Though words could never fully describe all her life, she committed her life to acts of selfless giving, extensive Biblical Studies, and fervent prayer. She gave her devotion and unconditional love to her family to earn her the distinguished title - Beloved Mother. Sandra and Ralph were married March 9, 1985, and celebrated 27 years together. From their blessed union was a daughter Alexandria Hatchell Newton and step daughter, Laura

Hatchell Morris. She leaves behind daughters, a granddaughter Ashley M. Calcutt; and two great grandchildren, Carter Calcutt and Zileigh Calcutt. She also leaves behind a sister, Sherry Thomas; and a brother, Alan Hardin.

During her 16 years as a full Elder with the United Methodist Church of South Carolina she wrote “Spiritual Warfare: A How To Guide for Defeating Satan”. Sandra was a pastor at the following churches: Cumberland UMC (Assistant pastor in Florence), Hebron UMC, Pergamos UMC (Cades Hebron), Target UMC, Gerizim UMC (Holly Hill), Mt Dearborn UMC, Heath Chapel UMC (Great Falls), Cottageville UMC, Rehoboth UMC (Cottageville), St. Paul UMC, Republican UMC (McCormick), Suttons UMC, Trio UMC, and Earles UMC (Andrews). The Rev. Dr. Hatchell received multiple degrees during her life. Of those were a Bachelor’s

Degree in Business Administration from Limestone College; a Masters of Divinity from Lutheran Seminary; and finally a Doctorate from Therapon University in Biblical Counseling. Sandra had been very active in the Native American Task Force in South Carolina. She worked closely with her daughter, Alexandria Hatchell Newton, in the American Indian Scouting Association and spent her share of time in soup kitchens, helping the poor and hungry during holidays. While at Cumberland UMC, Sandra spent a great deal of time working with at risk teens and starting a youth center for them.

Even though she held multiple church charges at every move, Sandra always found time to help in the community. Whether it was playing softball, working with horses, donating her time at soup kitchens, working with at risk youth, she also crocheted blankets that she would pray over to give to those members of the church and community who were ill or just needed to know they were being prayed for.

Sandra was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer in October of 2010. God had great plans for Rev. Hatchell. Her time as a minister was short but she touched every person she came in contact with. She was a fighter as a minister, a fighter as a wife and mother, and a fighter as a cancer patient. Her favorite scripture was Psalms 27 and it describes her well. “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?...In this I will be confidant. Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!” On April 5th 2012, she was rewarded for service and faith by going peacefully to be with the Lord our Father. As it says in Matthew 25:23: “His Master replied, well done good and faithful servant”.

RETIRED MINISTERS

LEMUEL CORYDON CARTER

October 19, 1938 – December 18, 2011

In a phrase he described himself as “thankful for rich blessings”. The son of Doris Coffey Carter and Lemuel Corydon Carter, Sr., Lem Carter spent his young years in the Daytona Beach, Florida area. Friends there knew him as “Corydon”. At the age of 12 he moved to Manning, South Carolina with his mother and sister, Cean Carter Norris. She called him “Brother”. Soon everybody else did, too. His mother was a long-time Methodist. It was in Manning at the Manning United Methodist Church that his relationship with the SC United Methodist Conference began.

Lem graduated from Wofford College in 1960, served in the U.S. Army Adjutant General Corps and then attended seminary at Emory University. He received a doctorate from the Lutheran Seminary in1990 and an Honorary Doctorate from Wofford College in 1997. His service in ministry spans 39 years. Lem served as a local church pastor, a district superintendent and the Director of the Conference Council on Ministries. Lem was a strong advocate for the status and the role of women, single parent concerns, ethnic local church inclusivity and raising the quality of life for all people. He was especially happy to have played a major role in bringing together more than 10,000 people for the Vision 2000 Evangelistic Launch event in 1994. In 1988 he received the Order of The Palmetto, the highest honor given by the state of SC to a person exemplifying outstanding service to the state and her people.

“Brother” lived by love and faith. He married Mary Harriet Wiggins Carter. In a writer’s notebook that he kept for a few years prior to his death he said “Mary Harriet loves me more than life itself…..I love her more.” They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 25, 2011. After retiring in 2003, Brother and Mary Harriet moved to Chapin, SC. He could endure anything with his faith in God and Mary Harriet by his side. He loved spending time with his family. His children, Leila Carter, Alice and Larry White and his grandsons Carter and Caleb White all live in the Chapin area. His daughter Susan Fischer and her husband Joey live with their children Lauren, Katie and Matt, in Mount Pleasant, SC.

Daddy accomplished great things. But those are not what stands out to me most. He spent seven amazing years fighting a terrible disease but always made something positive out of his situation. Taking care of his yard, watching tennis matches, eating ice cream and watching football with his grandsons made him happy. Traveling to the Grand Canyon, New York and New Orleans invigorated him. Spending time in his cabin at Lake Junaluska with

Mary Harriet and extended family gave him laughter. A day at Flagler Beach took him back to his childhood and playing with Aunt Cean in the ocean. Hanging out with Lemuel and Woody Wiggins gave him fun. Loving and appreciating people energized him. In his writer’s notebook he said “I am happy for... being at peace in spite of cancer. I am a very happy person. I have the best soul mate, a happy home, a comfortable home which Mary Harriet and I enjoy very much. Thank you, God.” His love for Mary Harriet, his gratitude, his positive energy, his gift for making people feel good about themselves, his laughter and his peace…..his legacy.

GEORGE SUMMERS DUFFIE, JR.

June 3, 1935 – June 18, 2011 George S. Duffie, Jr. was born in Rock Hill, SC, to the Rev. George S. Duffie, Sr. and Audrey Midyette Duffie and spent 40 years of ministry in South Carolina. He graduated from Wofford College in 1957, having been elected to the Senior Order of Gnomes and Blue Key. George married Mary Elise Watson of Florence, SC, in 1958 and served the following appointments: Lake View Charge; Trinity, Conway; Trinity, West Columbia; Bethel, Bethune; Hibben, Mt. Pleasant; and St. John’s, Aiken. Some of the most rewarding days of ministry were when he was appointed to be the United Methodist Chaplain at the University of South Carolina from 1969-

1983. In 1983 Bishop Roy Clarke appointed him as the district superintendent of the Greenville District, 1983-1988.

In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by a wonderful, loving family of two sons and a daughter, their spouses and eight grandchildren: Summers and Sharon Duffle, and their children, Audrey, George III, and Sam; Luther and Jackie Duffie, and their children, Christina, Traywick and Kathryn and Alyson and Jeff Price, and their children, Brittany and Austin. During his years at The University of South Carolina, while registrar of the Board of Ordained Ministry, he designed and for three years, administered a program for ministers in their first appointment called Residence in Ordained Ministry. Michael Henderson, pastor at Cayce UMC, was a part of the first residency class and said, “George’s care for the future and for his fellow clergy was seen best in his creation of the residency program.”

Rev. Bob Clyburn, a friend from early childhood spoke of George with these words, “George was a lifelong friend, as close and dear as a brother, whose brilliance of mind and spirit enlightened us all so much, and at his leaving us, a light was taken from our lives that shall never be replaced.”

His concern for social justice was summed up by Rev. Bill Kinnett who spoke of George with these words, “His courage helped us stand firm when we were tempted to compromise the truth of the gospel for convenience or popularity.”

After forty years of ministry in SC, George and Mary retired to Oriental, NC. An avid sailor, George earned the US Coast Guard Master 100 Ton License. He was an active member and past commodore of the Sailing Club of Oriental and volunteered in many other activities in the community, including being active at the Oriental UMC. VINCENT F. HALTER JR. April 19, 1932 – May 22, 2012

By the time Pastor Vincent F. Halter Jr. (Ret. Col. USAF) of Lake Wateree heard his

Creator say, “Well done good and faithful servant,” he may have lived enough for four people. During his 80 years on this earth, Vince was a minor league baseball pitcher, a Citadel graduate, a United States Air Force Colonel, a college administrator, a United Methodist Local Pastor, a husband, a father, and a friend.

Vince was born on April 19, 1932 in Jacksonville, Florida to Vincent Francis Halter and Louise Huff Halter. In the early 1950’s, Vince’s dream of becoming a professional baseball player became a reality as he signed with the Detroit Tigers and began pitching in the minor

228

leagues. His desire for higher education trumped his love of baseball, so Vince traded in his baseball uniform for a Citadel cadet uniform. After graduating from the Citadel in 1954, Vince entered the United States Air Force. This was the start of a 27-year career that led him from fighter pilot and instructor of F-102, F-4 and F-15’s, to Base Commander at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, and introduced him to his future wife. Vince and Nancy were married in March of 1969 and, not long after, were deployed overseas on assignment with NATO. Upon returning to the United States, Vince retired from the United States Air Force as a Colonel in 1981 and immediately began his new job at USC-Sumter where he served as an Associate Dean, while teaching American Government and Public Administration. After 18 years at the University, Vince retired once again, but this time it was to answer God’s call into the ministry as a United Methodist Local Pastor in1998. Vince served God as a

Local Pastor with the congregations of the Rembert-St. John United Methodist Church Charge where he preached three sermons every Sunday. He retired from congregational ministry in 2011 but continued to minister to and with everyone he encountered.

Vince was surrounded by his wife, his three children, their spouses, and a dear friend in ministry when his heart gave its final beat on May 22, 2012. Even though he was known and loved by many, he was known and loved best by his wife of 44 years, Nancy Halter; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Kathleen Halter; his daughter Lisa Halter; his daughter and son-in-law Angela and Lee Marshall.

A Celebration of Life was held for Vince on Friday, May 25, 2012 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Sumter where the Reverend Michael Henderson and Reverend Larry Brown officiated a beautiful home-going for a man who was “larger than life”.

JOHN G. HIPP

September 29, 1914 – September 20, 2011

After John graduated from Emory Seminary, he was appointed to serve the Cross Anchor Charge. It was during the World War II era, and then he was transferred to Pickens. A number of ministers were serving as Chaplains at that time. This transfer was made during the conference year, due to the shortage of ministers. After serving Pickens for two years, John decided to volunteer as a Chaplain. He served in the European area until he was entitled to return to the States and to retire from military service. During his service in the S.C. Conference, he served churches in Belton, Startex, Central, Providence, Graniteville, Edgefield, North Columbia area, West Columbia, Newberry and Greenwood. John gave himself and his time to ministering to others with various needs. He also served in several conference areas as

Chairman of Board of Pensions, Board of Hospitals and Homes, and Board of Ordained Ministry in Greenwood.

After suffering a heart attack, he retired from the ministry, but later continued to serve as a retired minister wherever he was needed for a number of years.

After he retired completely, he spent much time gardening at his homeplace near Saluda. When he was about 85 years old he did backyard gardening until he was in his mid-90’s. He became disabled to work as he had for many years. At the age of 96 he died with a joy in his heart that “something glorious was about to transpire”.

JOSEPH McALLISTER, SR.

April 19, 1918 – September 29, 2011

Reverend Joseph McAllister, Sr., faithful Servant of the Most High God, was quietly called by God to his Heavenly home from his earthly residence on Thursday, September 29, 2011. God gently whispered in his ear, “Joseph, come home.”

Reverend McAllister was born in the Syracuse Community, Darlington, South Carolina, to the late Julius and Carrie Mack McAllister. He was the elder of two children.

Reverend McAllister attended the public schools of Darlington County. He completed the Conference Course of Study at Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta, GA, where he graduated number one in his class. He believed that a call to preach was a call to prepare.

At the tender age of nine years of age, Rev. McAllister wanted to go to the “Mourner’s Bench.” He asked his Mama what to say. His Mama’s response was, “Joseph, you are too little.” According to his Mama, he replied, “Tell me what to say,” Again–according to his Mama–she told him to say, “O, Lord, save my soul.” He said just that and got up singing, “Satan, I’m Gonna Tear Your Kingdom Down.” Rev. McAllister confessed and received Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior, and joined Shiloh United Methodist Church. He acknowledged and accepted his call to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ at nine years of age. Even at that young age, Rev. McAllister was active in the church. He was invited to sit with the Pastor in the pulpit at that age.

Reverend McAllister was married to his beloved “Gladys”, the late Mrs. Gladys Marks McAllister for almost 62 years, who he loved, honored, cherished and respected. Their union was blessed by God with six daughters and eleven sons. Rev. McAllister was extremely devoted to his wife and children. He was a good husband and father. He always took care of home first with love and devotion. He was a strict compassionate disciplinarian because he wanted to prepare his children for the world that he knew that they would encounter outside of the home. He was a God fearing man who LOVED the Lord and he instilled that reverence and love in his children and grandchildren. He had a strong faith that he imparted into his children and grandchildren by example. He loved the church and instilled that love in his children and grandchildren.

Rev. McAllister was a retired United Methodist Pastor. He was an Itinerate Elder in the United Methodist Church of the South Carolina Conference. After retiring as an active Pastor in 1988, Rev. McAllister was immediately called back as a Supply Pastor during the same Annual Conference. After four Supply Pastor Appointments, Rev. McAllister returned to his home church, Shiloh United Methodist Church. He continued to be called upon frequently to preach.

Rev. McAllister was blessed and favored by God with the gift of exceptional and effective pastoral skills. His pastorates included: 1961 Glenn Chapel; 1962 Beulah and Shiloh; 1971 Kingstree East, 1972 Bennettsville Circuit, 1979 Little Rock Parish. His Supply Pastorates included: The Jefferson Parish twice; Bethel on the Cheraw Parish and Mt. Beulah of the Mt. Beulah-Hopewell Charges. Denominational Service: District Board of Church Location and Building 1980-1984; Community Action Agency 1975-1980. He always talked about how God blessed and favored him to pastor 29 churches.

Rev. McAllister was preceded in death by: his mother; his wife, Mrs. Gladys Marks McAllister; four adult sons, Rev. Joseph, Jr., Rev. John, Charles and Howard McAllister; two infant sons, Francis Paul and Franklin Timothy.

Daddy, your memory will live on forever within our hearts. Your love–our love–will never die. Those of us left behind who will join you one day are: six daughters: Rev. Ruth (Bishop

Thomas) Ward, Mildred (Rev. Frank) Cook, Attorney Peggy McAllister, Barbara (Frank) Thomas, Rev. Angela (Rev. James) Wilson and Karen (Andre) Mickens; five sons: James (Mary) McAllister, Bishop Julius H. (Joan) McAllister, Sr., Rev. Melvin (Andrea) McAllister, Kenneth (Regina) McAllister and Rev. Donald (Rosa) McAllister, Sr.; 39 grandchildren; 57 great grandchildren; six nieces, two nephews, a host of cousins, relatives and friends.

JOHN WINIFRED ROBINSON

October 2, 1910 – September 1, 2011

John Winifred Robinson was born in Greer, South Carolina to the Reverend Thomas John Robinson, a second generation Methodist pastor, and Mrs. Rebecca Spann Robinson, a mid-wife. After completing his formative education in Kingstree, he dreamed of playing professional baseball with the Negro League. He attended Claflin College where he accepted his call to ministry and met a beautiful, young aspiring teacher, Earnestine W. Williams. Their union lasted seventy-five years.

After graduating from Claflin, he attended Gammon Theological Seminary. From his first

230

appointment, when he “thumbed a ride” with truck drivers from Orangeburg to North Charleston, to visit the sick on Saturday, and preach on Sunday, he was committed to servant leadership and a genuine love for God’s people. Throughout his life, Rev. Robinson loved to preach. His melodious voice lifted souls who hungered to hear the word of God. A master storyteller, he could recite most of the Psalms. He earned a reputation as an organizer for leading several churches through building projects. In each appointment he met people where they were, cast a vision, led them to take ownership of it, and to live it out. Each church met 100% of their conference benevolence and apportionments every year. Rev. Robinson inspired youth in the communities he served. He encouraged scores to his beloved Claflin, and others, whom he mentored in ministry, to his beloved Gammon. He also inspired his family: John W., Jr., a chemist; Annette, a US2 Missionary; and

William Thomas, an Elder in the UMC. Rev. Robinson lived to witness his oldest grandson ordained an Elder in the UMC, and his youngest grandson preach his first sermon Father’s Day 2011. He was always an active member of the Democratic Party, the NAACP, and the SCLC because he believed that the church should shape policy to make life better for the people it was called to serve. While in Saint George, he and his wife brought the federal program Head Start to Dorchester, Allendale, and Berkley Counties. During the 1940’s, when it was not safe for blacks to fight racist systems of the South and black youth had no place to socialize in rural areas, Robinson worked publically for change. He purchased a movie projector and a jukebox to show Negro movies and to open the fellowship space as a dance hall for the community’s youth. Many highlights marked his journey: In the Civil Rights Movement, he fought for voters’ rights. He took the voters’ rights struggle to a conference at the White House during President Johnson’s administration. In the church, he fought racial injustice in the segregated Central Jurisdiction. He participated in the national BMCR organizing conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. After Rev. Robinson retired, Governor Riley appointed him to serve eight years on the Commission to Human Right’s Affairs Committee from the suggestion of Representative Clyburn. One of his life’s most momentous events was receiving an Honorary Doctorate from his beloved Claflin University where five generations of Robinsons received their undergraduate degrees. To God Be the Glory!

In his last years, Rev. Robinson’s health began to decline. His wife, daughter, and his grandson Andrew provided for his total care. In the midst of his struggles, he felt his family and friends’ love, laughter and deep faith. Although he grew weak, his handshake remained firm. His gentle presence and warm love came through to all who visited. After more than fifty years of ministerial service, he remained a man of deep faith and unwavering courage. Surrounded by family, he left this realm at 101 years of age. Rest in peace, good and faithful servant. The battle is over; the victory is won!

His record of service: 1936 North Charleston Circuit; 1937 Georgetown-Andrews; 1940 Williamston Circuit; 1946 Pendleton Circuit; 1950 Appleton; 1951 Ruffin Circuit; 1954 Bamberg Circuit; 1956 Dillon Circuit; 1964 St. George-Shady Grove; 1969 St. George Charge; 1972 Francis Burns, 1976 Centenary-Alcot; 1978 Bethesda-St. Mary.

RETIRED DIACONAL MINISTER

WILLIAM BRANT MILLS

August 16, 1943 – February 18, 2012

In the song “I Cannot Sing Tonight”, Stephen Foster speaks of having a sorrow too great to sing. That was the feeling of many on February 18th, 2012, when William B. Mills passed away at the age of 68 after a hard fought battle with cancer. Stephen Foster is the only musician from the Suwanee River Valley that most people know of.

Another musician, more familiar to the people of Florence, SC, reigned from that valley – my father, William B. Mills. In Live Oak, Florida, where he was born on August 16th, 1943, they called him “Billy”. In Florence, SC, where he served as Diaconal Minister at Central United Methodist Church for over 40 years, he was known as “Bill”. To me, of course, he was and will always be “Daddy”.

Bill Mills was one of the fortunate few who know how to listen. He listened to his heart. He found his calling. And, he spent his entire life serving God and the Methodist community; turning worship services into worship experiences. Members of the congregation, who also knew how to listen, were lifted up in song, experiencing the liturgy in ways that few are able to. The music at Central United Methodist Church was a part of the worship service, in that it was woven with the sermon and order of service to form a tapestry, a complete picture.

Page 10: Section VIII Record of Remembrance - United … VIII - Record...SECTION VIII RECORD OF REMEMBRANCE ... A How To Guide for Defeating Satan”. ... 10,000 people for the Vision 2000

232

He spent his years at Central taking part in a transformation of the organ, creating an instrument that would assist in worship in ways that only an instrument of its size and depth could. Today, Central’s organ contains 64 ranks of pipes totaling nearly 4,000 pipes.

You would be hard pressed to find a life in the community of Florence, SC that hasn’t been touched by Bill Mills; whether he played for a wedding or a funeral, he became a part of people’s life experience during some of the most important and intimate moments. Just as in a formal worship service, he understood the importance of music to these occasions. He could put the joy people were feeling at a wedding into song. Likewise, he could help people feel what they needed to feel at a funeral.

My father was somewhat iconic in the community. I knew that growing up. I knew that everyone knew who my father was and that that was not the case with the fathers of most of my friends. So for me, despite all of the amazing things he did, he is just “Daddy”. Despite having a talent that was clearly apart from the rest, he was just “Daddy”. In the last years of his life, he became “Grandfather” to my son Liam; as well as to my brother’s children Elliana and William. Six weeks after his passing, his fourth grandchild, Miriam, was born. He wanted so badly to meet her, but the cancer didn’t allow for that.

The only thing I ever saw light a passion in his eyes the way music did was these Grandchildren. The love he felt for them was so clear. Watching him love them, showed me how much he had always loved my brother and me. I realized too that the passion I always saw in my father wasn’t just for God and music. His passion was for life...for living. In that way, he was always serving and praising God. He transcended being a musician. He became an instrument.

He planned his funeral service while lying in a hospital bed. Although, as Stephen Foster so eloquently expressed, none of us felt like singing after his death, he wanted us to. He wanted us to sing him to heaven. One of the anthems he chose for the choir to sing said:

If you would comfort me, sing me a lullaby If you would win my heart, sing me a love song If you would mourn me and bring me to God,

sing me a requiem, sing me to Heaven We were blessed to have had him as a part of our lives...to know someone who could

sing us to heaven while our feet were still grounded solidly on Earth. ~ Susan Mills Rana

BEULAH MAYE “BILLIE” CHAPMAN DAVIS

August 30, 1921 – June 25, 2011

Rev. Beulah Maye “Billie” Chapman Davis, 89, went to her precious Savior from her earthly home Saturday, June 25, 2011. Widowed after 58 years of marriage with Rev. William Dixon “Bill” Davis Sr.

Rev. Davis had Alzheimer’s. She had 2 lucid hours before lapsing into a coma. We sang hymns, quoted scripture, prayed, talked about family and what we meant to each other. When asked if there was anything at all that she wanted, she said, “to be faithful to Jesus to the end!” Her last words were, “Trust Jesus! Trust God!” What a witness! What a legacy!

Rev. Davis was ordained in 1944 into Prison Ministries; worked with Furnace Street Mission in Ohio; Skid Row, Salvation Army Children’s Street Ministries; the DOD in DC during the Korean War with Troop Logistics. Rev. Davis went from God’s Bible School and College to Cuba as a Missionary. A young boy was asked to tell the villagers to come to a hot dog roast to meet the new missionaries. The boy went through the village shouting “Come see the crazy Americans. They eat dogs hot.” What a crowd!

NADEEN WILLIAMS DICKERT

July 19, 1919 – April 8, 2012

Nadeen Williams Dickert, the widow of the Rev. Roy E. Dickert, arrived in her Heavenly Home on Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012. What a glorious day Easter Sunday must have been in Heaven! Nadeen was born July 19, 1919 in Swansea, SC, one of 13 children. She had to grow up rather quickly and had to master many everyday chores. She mentioned on occasion that she was making biscuits by the time she was 10 or 11. One spring day in 1934, she met Roy Dickert who became the love of her life. At the tender age of 15, Nadeen and Roy were married. Indeed, they had just started their “Trails to Triumphant Living.” Nadeen soon realized that her husband never wavered in his love for God and his desire to become a minister. She was always there to encourage him to finish his education. After five years of marriage, they were blessed with a baby daughter (Gayle Dickert Kendall). During the next four years, Nadeen gave birth to another daughter (Annette Dickert Copeland) and two sons. However, they

lost both sons within a four-month period in 1943. It was a struggle to keep going after these great losses. However, Nadeen became a great saleslady and sold World Book Encyclopedias. Their goal was reached, and Nadeen served with Rev. Dickert at Methodist churches throughout South Carolina.

At age 53, Nadeen lost Rev. Dickert to a heart attack. This was quite an adjustment for Nadeen without him. Nadeen spent time with family and traveled a lot; she especially enjoyed a tour of the Holy Land. She enjoyed both her homes in Columbia and Poplar Creek Landing (Lake Marion). Nadeen’s aspiration was to publish a book of Rev. Dickert’s sermons and devotional writings. The first edition of Our Trails to Triumphant Living was published in 1976 and a second edition in 1987. Her favorite hymn was “Others” and she truly lived a life for others. The Epitaph the family chose for Nadeen Dickert is one word, OTHERS.

January 2, 1926 – February 18, 2012

Vera Allison met Roscoe Blackmon Garris while attending Bob Jones College, Cleveland, Tennessee, in 1947. A few months later the two wed. Roscoe Garris had previously served two years in the United States Navy and was in divinity school at Bob Jones. Roscoe was licensed to preach on September 11, 1947. Early appointments included: Inman Mills (1948), Mt. Vernon-N.GA (1950), St. John’s-Sumter (1953), St. James-Charleston (1958) and Grace-Pickens (1962). During these early years, Vera began raising a family of three children - one son and two daughters. She was actively involved in all aspects of the church - choir, UMW, and various committees. In 1962 Roscoe became a chaplain with the VA Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee. Vera began volunteer work. As a child she had always dreamed of being a “preacher’s wife” and playing the piano. Both dreams she fulfilled. In 1975, Roscoe took a chaplain position with the Oteen VA

Federal Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina. This move was made to enable the family to be closer to Vera’s parents - Grady and Mary Allison (Hendersonville, North Carolina). Vera began assisting in caring for her aging parents while being a very active member of Grace United Methodist Church. While a member of Grace, she served as church treasurer and later as chairperson for the Commission on Missions. She also volunteered at the nearby Billy Graham Training Center, “The Cove”.

Preceded in death by her husband, she is now with her Lord and Savior. ~ Cathy Cowans, daughter
