Description of the Project A forward thinking approach to the environment is of paramount importance in a pharma regulated environment. In parallel to the Hemas 70th Anniversary Celebration, we at Morison proposed a project to preserve Water, the lifeblood gifted from Mother Nature to make surviving on Planet Earth possible. Removing some of the contaminants by purification makes waste-water fit enough to be discharged back to the environment. However, we believe as a responsible corporate citizen, that we could reuse waste-water for a second time and in turn reduce our fresh water footprint.
Morison’s Water Footprint
Methodology
Reduce Re-Use Recycle How can we include “Water
Conservation” to our life style ?
Head Office - Kelaniya Factory - Mutwal Home
Project Triggers
Focus Locations
Why don’t we use the same water for multi-purposes?
What can we do to minimize usage of fresh water ?
A Wholistic Approach to Reduced Daily Water Usage in Production Currently, Mutwal factory uses approx. 50,000 liters of water for on a daily basic. In the Head office aprox.15 cubic meters of water is being used on average daily basis. At home, water usage is hardly tracked. Hence, we implemented the waste water reuse project for the Mutwal Factory, never the less extending it to the head office and our homes.
Pilot Project to Scale-up in Homagama Morison is in the process of building an EU GMP Manufacturing facility with a higher production capacity compared to the existing plant. Our project in Mutwal is a pilot study to implement the same know-how to the new plant in Homagama. This initiative will also greatly help is building a positive relationship with the Central Environmental Authority when building our New Homagama facility.
Benchmark Sustainable Initiative Morison has taken a leap through this project to investment LKR 2.7 Mn in reducing the water footprint. It is definitely the FIRST of its kind for the Pharma Industry.
Sustainable Practices Among Employees This project will help to change the awareness among staff in their day to day behavior to make water conservation a part of their lifestyle. Further, we have also spread the word by actively getting their families to participate in this worthy cause.
Triple Bottomline Reporting As a responsible, ethical corporate entity, we have actively taken a step towards reducing Morison Water footprint and taking a significant step towards the Triple Bottomline Reporting – Profit, People & Planet
Goal & Long Term Strategy
Directly Contribute to SL Bio-Diversity Discharging of non-treated water would have been directed to the sea causing by the Municipal Council damaging Sri Lanka’s oceans. Through a zero liquid discharge mechanism, Morison is taking an active step to not pollute marine life .

Project Implementation : Reusing prod’ waste water for AC Cooling Towers
● To live our Purpose of “Better Quality of Life” by setting an example to be the first pharma company to launch a project of similar nature ● Re-use production waste-waster for centralized AC cooling towers – No. of liters saved
A) Mutwal Project
Phase Modification Remarks
Phase 1 Installation of Multimedia filter and an activated carbon filter at the aeration tank outlet
Aeration water will be discharge through these filters prior to release in to the municipal drainage system. This will effects on the COD & BOD levels. Observed COD & BOD levels, COD<100mg/L BOD<10mg/L
Phase 2- Planet Saver Project
Installation of Ultra filtrations unit
Improve the quality of the treated water to match with the cooling tower process water parameters
Installation of pumping system from ETP to Cooling tower Expected saving- 4500L per day
Phase 3 Installation of pumping system from ETP to Toilets Expected saving-3500L per day

Main Sumps: Stores the waste water from production
Effluent Plant: Treats the waste water
Storage Tanks: Treated water goes to the storage tank
Filters: Multi filter & Activated carbon filters improves the quality of the water
Storage tanks: Temporary storage
Ultra filtration unit: Further, improves water to suit the required cooling tower makeup water parameter.
Storage tank: Main storage for treated water
Cooling tower: makeup water will be circulated in the cooling tower to absorb the heat from the AC Compressor
Note: Marked in blue is the project

Positive Impact & Measurement Positive Impact on the Environment Measuring Criteria
Estimated saving of fresh water usage from the municipality council of approx. 4,500 liters on a daily basis.
Measuring through water fixed near the cooling tower Proof: Log sheet attached (H a )
Increase operation efficiency by saving of approx. LKR 17,000 on the monthly water bill
Daily water saving of 8 cubic meters (cooling + flushing) thereby saving Rs. 720 daily (Assumption: LKR 90 as average unit cost of water.) Proof: ETP daily operational check list (H b)
Reducing waste-water that flows to the sea by re-using treated water
Reduction in 8 cubic meters in daily waste water ultimately discharged to the sea. Proof: ETP daily operational check list
Reducing the size of Morison Water Footprint which will positively impacting the image of Morison and Hemas as a group providing good “Corporate Citizenship" to our community
