TRANSFORMINGCHALLENGES adapted water

& waste services for the refining & petrochemical industry

risk control.regulatory compliance.production continuity.brand value.environmental protection. SUEZ’s proven water and waste solutions offer the refining and petrochemical industry high levels of performance and continuity. We have reliable, robust and sustainable processes that fit to your high HSE standards, adapt to changing national and international regulations and legislation, and optimize industrial performance.

Our customized solutions follow the specific requirements of mature refining and petrochemical complexes or greenfield projects.

How can you ensure production continuity? By providing mobile water treatment solutions for emergencies, scheduled maintenance operations, or meeting long-term needs through tailored leasing solutions.

The mobile treatment solution provided to Murco’s refinery in the UK reduced boiler blowdowns by a factor of 10 without any commitment or capital expenditure.

How can you comply with stricter environmental regulations? By using state-of-the-art technologies & adapted services to treat polluted wastewater and hazardous waste.

In Rotterdam, the implementation of a complete new effluent treatment plant enabled a BP refining plant to meet IED 2010/75/EU regulations, while raising its wastewater treatment capacity.

INTO OPPORTUNITIES

How can you achieve operational efficiency? By improving water & waste treatment processes and increasing recovery.

In France, the Beautor facility specializes in spent solvent distillation and regeneration to recover new solvent according to the REACH regulations.

The remotely controlled cannon cleaning device enables facility maintenance with no direct human intervention, thereby complying with ATEX directives.

Membrane bioreactorCleaner water and increased flexibility

By combining biological treatment with membrane filtration, our membrane bioreactors produce higher-quality water. Their modular design also responds to variations in effluent flow.

Removing hard COD Water reuse and environmental protection

Oxyblue™ reduces persistent-pollution loads in effluents. For Petrochina in Sichuan, the process has been designed to reuse more than 2/3 of the effluents for water-resource protection in the area.

SmartZprocess™ Cutting-edge treatment for Zero Liquid Discharge

As part of its advanced solution for Zero Liquid Discharge, SUEZ uses Evatherm, evapocrystallization systems for the total elimination of wastewater discharge into neighbouring waterways. Performance results include water footprint limitation with recycling of high-quality water up to 99% and optimized valorization of by-products like salts.

Because refining and petrochemical activities imply various risks, safety represents a priority at each step of the production process. Site-customized risk assessment, cross-audits with other production sites, accidents and hazardous situations feedback: at SUEZ, we develop services to prevent operational risks.

The combination of innovative technologies and the expertise of our certified staff ensures optimal safety conditions for maximum productivity.

Our EHSQ policy is based on a continuous improvement approach and we are certified ISO 14000, OHSAS 18001, Mase, VCA, ISO 900S, ISO 50001 and ISO 26000. Our people are trained according to SIR and S3C standards.

protecting people and your operations: our number-one priority

reducing costs, improving safetyPetroineos Grangemouth Refinery, Grangemouth, UK

“Since day one, this partnership has allowed us to reduce costs and improve performance. In addition to day-to-day management, SUEZ also has a long-term vision for optimizing all our facilities” – Ray Mountford, commercial director at Petroineos Grangemouth

Petroineos chose SUEZ to manage the entire water cycle at the Grangemouth Refinery in Scotland. The complex water- and effluent-treatment systems were studied and a project put in place that has helped minimize boiler blowdown, improved the treatment of oily sludge and raised the levels of wastewater reuse at the ethanol unit. By optimizing the facility’s operations and reducing operating costs, SUEZ helped improve productivity while lessening environmental impact.

objective: Optimization of the refinery’s water cycle

measured benefits: €7 million of annual savings

supporting Petrobras’ developmentPetrobras’ Replan Paulínia refinery, Brazil

Replan, Petrobras’ biggest refinery in Brazil, processes 20% of the country’s oil. To meet higher production targets, Petrobras commissioned SUEZ to increase the plant’s process-water capacity and reduce the environmental impact of effluent treatment. By modernizing the existing treatment plant and building new plants using ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis the production capacity of process water was doubled.

SUEZ also put in place a new system for treating condensate, as well as covering the treatment basins so all effluent gas could be treated to meet emission regulations.

objective: Modernize the water-treatment circuit, raise capacity and control volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions

measured benefits: Doubling of capacity for process-water production

VOC emissions meeting regulations

more than a contractor, a partner in safety Total Normandy Platform, Gonfreville, France

In 2014, Total chose SUEZ to provide industrial cleaning services in a number of areas at its refining and petrochemical complex in Normandy. To accompany the project of modernizing the platform, a dedicated industrial-maintenance team was put in place at the site.

On-site coordinators can now anticipate cleaning needs and optimize the human and material resources needed. This new planning system is more reactive and is contributing to the reduction in maintenance costs and operation times at the site. As part of its continual improvement of services, SUEZ has also put in place a complete system of safety indicators to allow for improved control of operational risks.

In addition, the Total Gonfreville plant was selected for a European research program called E4Water to which SUEZ participated. The pilot project aims to improve water reuse for cooling systems and the extended wastewater treatment line, in order to reduce water consumption by 20-40%.

objective: Reduce operational costs by improving integration of on-site maintenance services

measured benefits: A 15-20% reduction in on-site maintenance costs

a cleaner, greener ChinaShanghai Chemical Industry Park, Shanghai, China

“The protection of the environment is of critical importance to our government’s agenda. We are pleased to have SUEZ as our partner, as it brings advanced technologies and management skills to effectively treat industrial effluents and hazardous waste produced by companies on-site” – Director of SCIP Administration Committee

One of Asia’s largest petrochemical platforms, Shanghai Chemical Industry Park (SCIP) produces 7% of the GDP of China’s largest city. SUEZ was contracted to manage the site’s hazardous waste, supply its drinking and industrial water, and treat its highly polluted effluent.

Our solutions have created a circular economy in which waste and effluents are transformed into process water and steam used by industry on site, all while meeting the most stringent regulations.

objective:Create a circular economy & reduce the impact of industry

measured benefits:Energy generated from waste saves the equivalent of 25,000 tonnes of coal a year, while treated wastewater is equivalent to the daily use of 300,000 people

helping Shell remediate a former refinery T. Stangeland Maskin – Norske Shell, Stavanger, Norway

When the refinery at Sola, Norway, closed after 35 years of operation, SUEZ was called in to remediate the soil at the site. One of the largest demolition projects in Norway, the refinery was torn down selectively, with a recycling level of 98.3%.

Polluted with a variety of hydrocarbon products, including diesel, jet fuel, petrol and heavy fuels, the soil was treated using three different methods: biological treatment by landfarming and air injection-extraction, soil washing, and low-temperature thermal desorption. The entire, 36-month, 24-7 clean-up operation was carried out on site, a solution that not only avoided extra transportation costs, but also increased safety and security for workers and local residents.

objective: Soil clean-up at a refinery site

measured benefits: Nearly 420,000 tonnes of hydrocarbon-polluted soil cleaned over 36 months

€14.3 billion in total revenuesin 2014

81,000 employees
