SECURUSWho do those bullied tell

Around 30% of victims of cyberbullying do not report it to an adult

Most victims are likely to tell a friend rather than a parent or a teacher

Figures are similar to findings among students who have been bullied ‘‘normally’’

Key points known about cyberbullying

• Cyberbullying occurs most frequently amongst girls• Those bullied less likely to report it• Difficult for those bullied to escape from it• Wide dissemination –once material is released on the Internet,

control has been lost• Lack of closure• Like all forms of bullying can be very damaging to self-esteem• Those who do it may feel anonymous and it has an impersonal

feel

SECURUSHow do victims feel?

• “One girl told me she would come and murder my parents and kill me personally. She made me cry so hard that I threw up.”

• “This one guy asked me how I looked and wanted to know about my body and stuff and I just flat out told him to leave me alone. I would have reported him but the ISP wouldn’t even let me block him without parental permission. So he bullied me and stuff whenever I got on. It was horrible. That was four years ago, and I still remember everything he said to me. Every exact word. I felt awful. I hated it. I wanted to tell my parents, but I was afraid they would never let me chat again…”

• “I feel powerless to do anything because I am so scared for my own safety…”

• …”it makes me feel bad and depressed…like I don’t want to be part of this world any more…”

SECURUSRecent Study from York

• A recent independent study by York St John University into the impact of Securus monitoring software has revealed that only 51% of participating schools believe they were effective in dealing with cyberbullying on school PCs before installing this technology. However, since the installation of Securus, all felt confident that they are effective in dealing with PC based cyberbullying.

• Ninety-six schools from across the UK took part in the study with nine-out of-ten agreeing that Securus is effective at identifying online grooming and visits to inappropriate web sites. This compared with only half of schools who said they were effective at identifying these behaviours themselves.

• The majority of schools reported that before installing Securus, they felt their blocking and filtering software was insufficient for tackling inappropriate use of ICT and now have greater peace of mind for their pupils’ safety.

SECURUSWhat can schools do? (Taken from DCFS cyberbullying Guidance)

• It is compulsory for schools to have measures in place to encourage good behaviour and respect for others on the part of pupils, and to prevent all forms of bullying.

• Ensure cyberbullying is included in AB policy• Teachers need sufficient knowledge on how to deal with these

forms of bullying• Ensure students are taught about cyber safety- its risks and

consequences• Monitor e-communications on school site• Clear policies on mobile phone use
