MAY MEETING Barry Orrell

Once upon a time, a long time ago, the church body of Deep Creek started an event called May

Meeting. Back then, Deep Creek would not meet in the winter because it was difficult to heat the

old church. They would resume meeting in May. May Meeting started during the time when some

folks were leaving the farm to take jobs at companies such as RJ Reynolds, Hanes, and other

industrial companies. May Meeting was a reopening of our church.

I was fortunate to have the privilege of being the Sunday School teacher for the Senior Men

which was a very large class. We met downstairs and they taught me a lot about God, our church,

Yadkin County history, World War II, farming, families, and May Meeting at Deep Creek Church.

These men shared with me and others their May Meeting experiences. I would like to share

this with you as it is important history in the life of our church.

The old church would be packed for May meeting. There would be so many people in

attendance that some would sit in the windows to hear God’s Word. Folks who had moved away

would come back for May Meeting. After the morning worship service, they would break bread

together on long tables that would be on the grounds where our current parking lot now is.

Beyond the tables would be horses and wagons tied up to trees or posts. There would be a few

Ford A and T Models scattered about. After the lunch, the families would fellowship, some would

go home to “milk and feed” and then return for an evening worship service.

This year wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a HIGH ATTENDANCE SUNDAY to celebrate Spring,

and honor our Heavenly Father? OK—how can we do this? You come, and bring your family, invite

your neighbors and friends. Invite your co-workers, your in-laws, and if you know any outlaws—

invite them too. The May Meeting Worship Service will be Sunday, May 21, and will begin at 10:30

am outdoors near the Barn next to our church. Lunch will be served in the Fellowship Hall and you

can dine and fellowship inside or outside. Come experience our past, with our present and future

at May Meeting.

VISION Greetings in the NAME of CHRIST!

At the beginning of each academic year, I would tell my Army ROTC cadets at Wake Forest,

“only he who sees the invisible can do the impossible.” Vision—not just our “physical vision,” but

our “spiritual vision” is important to both our individual and corporate spiritual well being.

Colossians 1:15 reminds us that, “Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all

creation.”

The clarity of our “spiritual vision” depends entirely upon our relationship with Jesus Christ.

Without an abiding and thriving relationship with Christ, our “spiritual vision” becomes blurred and

in extreme cases we can become spiritually blind to God working within our own lives and the life of

HIS Church. Hebrews 12:2 gives us the key to maintaining our “spiritual vision” and helping us to

“see” God at work, “fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and

perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him

endured the Cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the

right hand of the Father.”

The world, the flesh, and Satan will do all they can to

keep our eyes off Jesus and thus obscure our “spiritual vision.” The “busyness” of life can often

overwhelm us and distracts us from developing a growing relationship with Christ. Consequently, we

end up in bondage and servitude to the evil trinity of “hurry, worry, and scurry” instead of

worshiping and glorifying the Holy Trinity of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Are you in bondage to the “busyness of life”? If so, then your “spiritual vision” is impaired. The

cure—take your eyes off the “busyness of life” and focus your eyes on “The Author of Life—Jesus

Christ.”

You see, unless we focus on Jesus, “the image of the invisible God,” we will never become what

God created us to be either individually or as a Church body. “Spiritual vision” is essential to doing

the “impossible.” Paul tells us in Philippians 4:13, “I/We can do Everything through Him who gives

us strength.” The key to “Everything” is “spiritual vision.”

I believe God is at work at Deep Creek Baptist Church and He has a Great plan for Our Church.

My prayer is that God will grant us the “spiritual vision” to see where He is already at work within

the Church body, the Community, and the world, and that we should, as Henry Blackaby says, “join

God where He is already at work.” Let’s all keep our eyes on Jesus and take up our crosses and

follow Him...wherever, whenever, and however He leads. Only then can we Be and Do Everything

God has called us to do, both individually and as a Church body.

SELAH!

In the “Grip of God’s Grace,”

...unless we focus on Jesus, “the image

of the invisible God,” we will never

become what God created us to be

either individually or as a Church body.

Information

Update Over the next few weeks your Family

Deacon will contact you and give you an

information form to complete. I am updating

the information in the computer. What is in

the data base is based on what you give.

I want you to know that I consider it a

privilege to serve you and will protect that

information. Information changes, or what I

have may be incorrect or incomplete. So

that I get the directory correct and print your

birthday, I need to update periodically.

Please print the information and include

your birth year (I promise not to share it).

The data base will not accept a birthdate

without a year so, if you don’t include one, I

have to make one up. I’m not good at that,

and some of you I don’t know, which means

your age will probably be incorrect.

In addition, your Family Deacon will bring

information for determining your Spiritual

Gift(s), or information on Spiritual Gift(s)

already determined for you. Please take the

time to review or complete the survey. This

will let you know the gifts the Spirit has

given you and how they can be used in

ministry at The creek.

Thank you for allowing me to serve you at

The Creek, and thank you in advance for

your help with this.

Serving Him by Serving You,

Judy
