ACTIVITIESgetting the most out of your vacation

WWhether you’re looking for water sports, relaxing spa days or family attractions, there’s plenty of excitement awaiting you throughout the Daytona Beach area.

All kinds of amusements are located here, miles of great beaches, museums, festivals and free concerts. Some will whet your appetite for an ice cream cone. But when you crave something that’s a bit different, take an air boat ride on a guided eco-tour, a river cruise or a kayak trip on a coastal waterway.

Besides the best surfing on the Eastern Seaboard, we offer a wide range of outdoor sports, including tennis, golf and fishing. It’s all close by. Summer is an excellent time to play the area’s many top-rated links and LPGA International courses designed by legends of the game.

If you’re goal is to totally relax, let go of stress and indulge in spa treatments for two. Or get dad to take the kids for an afternoon movie while mom goes to a spa for some pampering.

A side trip to an historic site or museum is a learning experience that’s rewarding on many levels. Parks are doing their part to promote a

healthy lifestyle with nature trails and accessible boardwalks. Many paved trails are shared by cyclists and baby carriages as well as hikers. Bring the camera to get that perfect shot!

What’s always delicious at Angell & Phelps is their yummy handmade chocolates made fresh daily. What’s is they were voted one of the top 10 Sweetest Destinations in the U.S by TripAdvisor.com!

owners at Sea Spirit Deep Sea Fishing in Ponce Inlet, Capt. Mike and Capt. Leebo, bring 50 plus years of experience and a comfortable family-friendly atmosphere. They’ve added 15 excursions and evening fishing.

Visit the location of Ponce Inlet Water Sports across from the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, to ask about taking a tour on the Arabella Fun Cat. Celebrities like Jimmy Buffett, James Taylor and even a US president have sailed the famous 50-foot catamaran.

We hope we’ve given you new ideas for things to do that you might not have heard of before, so have a wonderful time!

Ormond Beach south to New Smyrna Beach 13

Page 16: SEE Magazine Daytona Beach 2011.2

Bicycling on hard-packed sand at low tide is a great way to burn those calories you in-dulged in last night. There are 23 miles of

gorgeous beach in the Daytona Beach area. Ride as far as you like, and when you get hot, stop and take a dip in the surf!

Ormond Beach Scenic LoopThe Ormond Beach Scenic Loop Trail is a 30+ mile

route on some of Volusia’s most picturesque roads. For a good cardiovascular workout, begin early and plan to finish early. Always wear a helmet and bring water. This ride is for experienced bicyclists used to sharing the road with cars. You’ll see historic neighborhoods, salt marshes and the ocean. Check out our map on page 26 for the entire route.

Peddle to Tomoka Park from Granada BridgeWe picked a short segment with old oak trees that

form a tunnel of cool air to keep you comfortable in warm weather. In the N. Beach Street neighborhood, old Florida nostalgia overrules speed. The scenic 5-mile ride to Tomoka State Park starts at the Bailey Riverbridge park on the northwest side of Granada Boulevard (SR 40) Bridge. Turn

right on N. Beach Street. The small, weathered boathouse sitting on pilings on your right is the 1910 Ormond Yacht Club. Tree branches make lacy patterns on the pavement as you cruise past homes with large yards and expansive oak trees. Just past Inglesa Avenue, turn right at the Tomoka State Park sign and follow the hard-packed dirt path to the park entrance. This natural environment of rivers and maritime forest is good for body and spirit. Visit the To-moka Outpost for refreshments. Admission: $2 per bicycle.

Ponce Inlet TrailPonce Preserve, a 41-acre park with free parking, is a

good starting point for this 8-foot wide, paved trail. Feel the ocean breeze in your hair as you ride your bicycle 3 miles south along A1A to the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Marine Science Center. The path parallels dunes and maritime hammocks. Shade is limited so ride early. Check out the Green Mound State Archaeological Site, an ancient Indian shell mid-den in the center of the Preserve. The bird watch-ing is excel-lent from the Atlantic to the Halifax River.

For bicycle rentals see our Visitor Services on page 44.

DININGa world of dining choices

WWhen you are on vacation, deciding where you eat is as important as what you choose from the menu. It’s no surprise that we have a multitude of restaurants to please taste buds of every description. After all, our visitors come from all over the world.

A delicious seafood dinner in an eye-pleasing restaurant with just the right ambiance is universally popular with families on vacation. From a riv-erside deck with umbrella tables to a glass-walled marina dining room high above a latticework of boats, the water views around here are spectacular.

Fresh Florida seafood, prepared as you like it, broiled, steamed, blackened or sautéed, is as delicious as it is healthy. Our favorites include scrumptious selections of shrimp, oysters and clams caught in Florida waters.

Our chefs at locally owned restaurants and bistros are renowned for creating innovative menus. So indulge your taste buds in something adventurous like Caribbean, Asian, Mediterranean, Indian, Spanish or French cuisine.

The Ohana Luau (translated: family festival) has an all Polynesian Dinner Show and a gorgeous new décor that will boost your mood instantly. The NEW chef from Samoa prepares the best all-you-can-eat buffet we’ve tasted. You will feel like you’re in the Polynesian Islands.

The Ocean Deck Restaurant is introducing something with their fresh seafood. Try their healthy new Fish Tacos, Mahi Caesar Wraps and sit back: “no worries Mon.” The Ocean Deck still serves kids’ meals in a free Frisbee. It makes it easy for them to hit the sand afterwards to play.

Whether you are in the mood for a juicy broiled burger, Italian pasta or a slow-cooked, country barbeque sandwich, our restaurants can give your taste buds just what you desire. Many of them offer family-pleasing selections and prices that please your wallet.

Be sure to check out the back of the book for coupons and full menus.

NEW

Everybody loves shopping while on vacation, especially when you’re browsing through an extensive collection of beach-inspired gifts. We know you will find surprises each time you step inside one of our unique coastal shops.

From the finest merchandise at specialty retail shops to the biggest bargains and vintage objects at bustling flea and farmers markets, the Daytona Beach area is a shopper’s paradise.

Tucked between retail shops you’ll also find art galleries displaying paintings, photographs and other ocean-side treasures. Whatever you choose, a work of art in your home will always bring back warm vacation memories.

Are you ready to shop for the latest in swim fashions and resort wear? You’re in luck, that’s our specialty. Our stores feature fashions that are softly comfortable and all about ease. Summer’s subtle palate of colors is always flattering and enhances your tan!

Beachtowne USA has a look, so if you’re ready for a coastal style update, check out their selection of beach t-shirts,

wide brimmed hats and oversized beach towels. Yes, they have the same great souvenirs, and they are the same company, but what an awesome sign.

We love to stroll beneath the palm trees in Historic down-town Daytona Beach. Decorative wrought-iron archways are in keeping with the area’s art deco and neoclassical architecture. Downtown shops offer antiques, collectibles, home furnishings, art galleries, jewelry, clothiers and cafes where locals and visitors congregate.

The Angell & Phelps Chocolate Factory on Beach Street, where it’s always a sweet day, now offers Acticoa Chocolates, which contain cocoa flavanols. After the free tour, be sure to sample this chocolate that’s scientifically proven to have numerous health benefits. They were also voted one of the top 10 sweetest destinations in the U.S. by TripAdvisor.com

There’s a treasure trove of consignment shops and beach boutiques to explore too. For some surprises and unexpected bargains, put on your best flip-flops and check them out!

All sea turtles are endangered, but Loggerheads are most commonly seen on our beaches. Hatchlings—only about 2 inches long—wait until the sand cools at night before scrambling to the water where they spend several years floating in seaweed beds.

Green turtles and huge Leatherbacks also nest on Florida shores. Turtles don’t reach maturity for 15 to 50 years. Scientists believe that only 1 in 1,000 to 10,000 babies will survive to adulthood.

Don’t disturb a turtle that is crawling on the beach or laying eggs. Watch from a distance of at least 30 feet.

Avoid shining lights on the beach at night as this may frighten nesting females and confuse the hatchlings’ ability to find the sea.

Avoid walking or cycling in netted areas. Do not disturb markers or protective screening.

If you see a distressed turtle, call Volusia County Beach Patrol at 386-239-6484 or 386-756-7491

NNew Smyrna Beach is an old-time coastal town with an

inviting bohemian atmosphere. Flagler Avenue merchants

have preserved historic buildings along the five-block “main

drag” from ocean to river that is famously free of traffic.

To say the lifestyle is artsy is an understatement. It’s

a paradise for shoppers looking for art and handcrafted

collectibles – without the crowds you came to escape. Along

the stretch of colorfully painted shops and galleries is a fine

selection of eateries too.

The beach side of town has low-rise dwellings and is

bordered by 13 miles of powder sand and natural dunes. It’s

connected to the mainland by only two causeways, and to

the south it’s protected by the pristine Canaveral National

Seashore. The coastal estuaries are known for excellent

backwater fishing and kayaking.

Free-spirited artists have always been drawn to this

tight-knit Old Florida community. Exhibitions by prominent

Florida artists are offered at the Atlantic Center of the Arts

and the Harris House Gallery, located in a historic Lutheran

parsonage. Each year seasonal festivals celebrating art and

music enhance its dynamic reputation.

Downtown on the mainland, explore the Clay Gallery

on the Intracoastal for a selection of unique paintings, jewelry

and art objects. Their lush tropical garden is lovely and

available as a special event venue. Ask for Theresa to inquire

about private functions.

While you’re in town, visit the Flagler Avenue

Seafood Market, located in the Shops at The Colony, for a

variety of seafood dips and specialties like fresh Hawaiian

Poke tuna.

New Smyrna Beach boasts it is the second oldest city in

North America, although some scholars think it may be even

older than St. Augustine. The truth is, our visitors are charmed

by our historical sites and cultural events.
