Fellow Coaches,

I am very excited about leading our association for the next two years. Our membership is

growing and we are one of the largest coaching associations in this great country. Even now with

our economy the way it is I hope that we can continue to grow and work hard for athletics all over

our state.

Congratulations to all of our fall district, region, and state champions. May we all continue to

teach our athletes the importance of sportsmanship and the love of our respective sports. Remember

to not only teach the skills and team work but to respect our opponents as well as the officials who

call the games.Below I have listed the objectives of the VHSCA and I hope that we all can work

together to improve our association:

1) To foster the student athlete in our state;

2) Help maintain the highest possible standards in athletics and in the coaching profession, and to

work together for the improvement of athletics in Virginia;

3) To endeavor to improve sports in all phases by aiding the coaches in securing a more thorough

understanding of the various sports through improved coaching clinics;

4) To have a representative group of coaches to which athletic problems of general interest may be

referred in hopes of creating better relationships between schools;

5) To secure a better understanding of the problems of the coaches and to place at their disposal,

sources of information; 6) To promote good fellowship and social contacts among coaches.

Remember that the VHSCA Clinic and All-Star Games will again be in Hampton, July 6 – 10.

Information about registration and hotel information will be sent out in the spring. I hope to see you

all there.

Marshall ParkerPresident, VHSCA

GENERAL CRITERIANominees must exemplify the highest standards of sportsmanship, ethical conduct, moral character, and carry theendorsement of their respective high school.

The categories of athlete, coach, and contributor are included on the nomination form for expediency in understanding theprimary area in which an individual is to be considered for their achievements in interscholastic athletics and activities. Thegrouping is for screening purposes only and to assist those making the nominations in understanding the type of informationrequired. Once nominees are inducted, they are not categorized, but all are recognized as members of the Virginia HighSchool Hall of Fame.

To further explain, athletes would be former student participants who are being nominated for their achievements ininterscholastic athletics. Coaches would be considered on the merits of their high school coaching achievements only. Acontributor would be an individual who has made a contribution to interscholastic athletics or activities in some capacity otherthan those previously mentioned, including such areas as administration, sports ,medicine, sports media, official, activitiessponsor or participant, etc.

All candidates will be judged on their significant and/or long term contribution to interscholastic athletics andactivities. While many have served their school and local programs over a long and distinguished career, theiraccomplishments must have been worthy of state recognition for them to be considered. Longevity, withoutmeaningful state impact, does not constitute appropriate credentials for hall of fame consideration.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

(a) Coaches being considered must be retired or deceased with at least 20 years service in Virginia at a member school(s) orhave served 25 years at a member school(s) and still actively coaching. Persons nominated as a contributor to the VHSLmust meet similar criteria for a comparable period of time. If the candidate is a coach, the candidate must be a member ofthe Virginia State High School Coaches Association

(b) Athletes are eligible for nomination 5 years after their high school graduation. Their nomination initially will be placed in aInactive Category; 10 years after their high graduation, they will be placed in the Active Category and brought before theScreening Committee for consideration in the Hall of Fame.

METHODS OF NOMINATION(a) Any VHSCA member in good standing or VHSL member school may nominate.(b) The nominating deadline in Oct. 31, in the year prior to the year of induction.(c) No individual may make more than one nomination per year.(d) Nominations for candidates not selected shall remain open for consideration each of the next two years but will no

longer be considered thereafter unless a new renomination is submitted.
