A group of red shirted volunteers showed up at Youth Challenge headquarters in Westlake on Tuesday, May 24 to mark the 21st anniversary of the KeyBank Neighbors Make the Difference Day. Members of the Key Private Bank Team, Crocker Park office, took part in the company’s annual volunteer community service day by lending many helpful hands to Youth Challenge. Youth Challenge (YC) is a non-profit corporation that brings together children with physical disabilities and youth volunteers for year-round adapted sports and recreational activities. YC offers round-trip transportation to almost ev-ery program for all qualified participants. KeyBank vol-unteers helped clean YC’s fleet of lift-equipped vans to help improve the quality of the transportation experience for the participants. KeyCorp Chairman and CEO, Beth Mooney, even stopped by to help scrub the vans!

Westlake “Neighbors” Give Back Volunteers also planted flowers, washed gym mats and several team members rode with Jack Reck, a YC van driver, to pick up participants at school for the YC Scouts program. “The best part of our experience was having the chance to meet some of the very special kids Youth Challenge works so hard to help enjoy life in exceptional ways,” said Amy Lorius, Trust Officer. “My co-workers and I were fortunate to meet and ride with Ryan, Megan and Mickey. They were each so full of life and taught us that everyone comes in their own special package.” According to Lisa Spinale, Relationship Associate, “the best gift of all was being able to give our time to such an amazing organization.” Many thanks to Key-Bank for this day of service to Youth Challenge! For more information about Youth Challenge and to see additional photos of the Key Private Bank Team in ac-tion, visit youthchallengesports.com.

History came alive in a big way for students of Parkside Middle School in Westlake. The Sons of the American Revolution Elementary School Poster Contest this spring brought a record turnout! Fifth grader teacher Mrs. Colleen Steidel coordinated 31 entries for the con-test, tops in Ohio. Parkside came away with winners in both the Western Reserve and state of Ohio categories. “We are very proud of you. You have learned well and all of you entered some amazing works for this competition,” Zackary Hoon, Sons of the American Revo-

“American Revolution” Earns Parkside Honorslution, told the class as he awarded certificates and citi-zenship pins to winning par-ticipants last week. “You can’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been,” he added, stressing the impor-tance of American history. Norah Wilson will go on to national level competition for her top entry. She gained first place honors for both schools within the West-ern Reserve and all of Ohio. Her entry now goes to the National Poster Contest in Winston-Salem, North Caro-lina in July. Heather Weaver placed third in the Western Reserve competition. The motive of the contest is to maintain and expand the meaning of patriotism, respect for na-tional symbols and value of American citizenship: “e pluribas unum,” – one nation and one people.

Style starts with your smile! No one knows that better than Dr. A.C. Uveges, II, a recognized smile expert with over 20 years of experience in private practice. Well known to many active clients throughout the Cleveland area, Dr. Uveges is noted for his extensive training in New York City with the renowned “Dentist of the Stars”, Dr. Larry Rosenthal at the Rosenthal Institute at NYU. Today, Dr. Uveges has joined an exciting new Bright Now Dental office in North Olmsted. Conveniently located to Crocker Park and all the west side, Bright Now! Guided by the principle: “Smiles for Everyone,” Smile Brands dentists are commit-ted to spending more time caring for their patients — and less time on the admin-istrative, marketing and fi-nancial aspects of the dental practice — while benefiting from a lower cost structure. As a result, dental offic-es like the large and inviting offices now occupied by Dr. Uveges and his friendly staff provide greater flexibility in pricing their dental services competitively within their local market. “It is all about the pa-tient,” says Dr. Uveges, who always looks great in his up-

Meet the Smile Makerscale suit. “SMART Board” technology making headlines on college campuses is now available to kindergarteners at The Goddard School in Westlake. “SMART Board” (also known as “White Board”) technology is the cutting edge for computer classroom connectivity. The Goddard School at 30502 Center Ridge Road in Westlake started offering this high-tech educational component for its kindergarteners this school year. “It allows us to equal 12 months of student achievement in a nine month school year,” reports teacher Carly Purdy. “Basically, the SMART Board is a large interactive display hooked up to a computer or projector that allows the board to be used just like your desktop computer

Kindergartners Get “SMART” at Westlake The Goddard Schoolscreen can be used,” said franchisee Peggy Todd. “But with SMART Board, the screen is viewed by all students at the same time,” As a bright eyed-group of students sit on the colorful carpet in front of the large-size SMART Board, it is easy to see how this technology introduces interactive learning from a young age. “The screen is connected to the computer, and the board’s surface is interactive,” added Mrs. Carly. Students are able to manipulate numbers, letters, weather reports and other subject material on the screen with the touch of a finger or stylus. “The children and much more engaged during class time because of the SMART Board. They are always excited to see what we will do on it that day and they anticipate using it,” said Mrs. Carly. “Instead of everyone working on little pieces of paper in front of them, they all see it and they all get it.” “We’ve been at this location 10 ½ years. We offer preschool programs for children 6 weeks old to kindergarten age with all classes led by degreed teachers,” added Peggy. “I can’t tell you how many children have come into our infant room and continued through to our kindergarten programs.” SMART Board and White Board technologies are now being used world-wide by institutions of higher education everywhere. “The SMART Board functions as a tool that engages students while helping organize and present information; it also allows for more student involvement,” reports The

Ohio State University Learning Center. Students write with digital ink and may save work for a later time or to share with software such as Word; PowerPoint; Excel; and Adobe Reader on both Window PCs or Mac platforms. At The Goddard School in Westlake, kindergartners are now becoming fluent in this leading edge learning tool. Phone number is (440) 892-2689.
