Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne / 2019 Annual Report

Dear Friends,

Thank you for another successful year. Because of you, five hard working families received the keys to their new homes and more importantly their new lives. I have been amazed by the number of incredible, selfless individuals in our community. Local volunteers like you continue to surround our families with love, humility and generosity. Because of investments like these, families are stronger, healthier and have brighter futures.

Unfortunately, the number of families facing housing insecurity across the region is heartbreaking. In Allen County alone, eight families are evicted each day. Further, last October Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne was overwhelmed by the number of applications for housing across the region. We received over 750 in just 30 days. The need is great and at times overwhelming. We know it is going to take a concerted effort by many local partners to influence the level of change our community needs.

In northeast Indiana we have over 1,500 not-for-profit agencies, nearly a third of those focused on

social services specifically. We have an incredible opportunity to increase our collective impact if we can discover ways to leverage each organization’s respective networks and assets. In the book Rooting for Rivals, Tom Lin shares “We are not competitors in a limited marketplace, we are partners in God’s mission…Building the Kingdom of God is a team sport.”

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne is ready to partner. In our eyes, true collaboration is the relentless promotion and support of the many organizations addressing the housing crisis. We understand that to do this we must approach these partnerships with humble and generous hearts. We look forward to accomplishing more, together, in the new year and for many years to come.

Sincerely,

Andrew Gritzmaker | CEO

Family Spotlight: Stephanie WeaverThe Difference with a Habitat HomeStephanie Weaver thinks of her family’s journey with Habitat for Humanity like a roller coaster ride. At first, she was unsure and nervous about the ride and what it would bring, but soon those emotions transformed into a rush of excitement and confidence for their future.

In just one year since Stephanie and her family moved into their new home in Fuller’s Landing, the lives of her and her two kids—ages 12 and 16—have already changed. With the support of The Literacy Alliance, Stephanie began studying for the High School Equivalency exam. The day she earned her GED, she drove to Ivy Tech Community College and registered for classes. Now, she’s studying human services and will transfer to

Purdue University Fort Wayne to complete her bachelor’s degree. She’s already making plans to pursue her master’s degree.

A difference has been made in the lives of her children, too. Their grades shot up. They feel safe playing outside again. They’re making friends with other kids in Fuller’s Landing. Stephanie says the entire experience has brought their family closer together.

“I learned a lot about myself. I learned I can do it. I learned partnership is the best thing in the world. You can’t be better partners than with Habitat. Their love and affection is so empowering.”

– Stephanie Weaver

Milestone: Completing Phase One of Fuller’s Landing

After six build seasons of building homes in Fuller’s Landing on the northwest side of Fort Wayne, we dedicated our 44th and final home in Phase One for the Ith Family. The first phase of this neighborhood over the past several years would not have been possible without the thousands of volunteers from companies, churches, schools and organizations in our community. We are grateful for this community for literally coming together to build homes, community and hope!

Partnership Highlight: Mount Vernon Park PartnershipWhat started with a conversation between our CEO and Fort Wayne Metals Owner Scott Glaze sparked a housing partnership with Bridge of Grace Ministries, which is dedicated to empowering individuals and families by giving them the tools they need to be self-sufficient.

On September 12, on land provided by Bridge of Grace, Habitat volunteers started building our first collaborative home on Pettit Avenue in the Mount Vernon Park neighborhood. We are thankful to MSKTD & Associates for helping us redesign our floor plans which include three bedrooms and one bath.

“Collaboration has always been a part of Habitat’s DNA. We demonstrate it through our work with partner families, with our volunteers and with our donors.”

Design Update: The BauerAs we kicked off our partnership with Bridge of Grace Ministries last fall with our first official home outside of Fuller’s Landing, we were in need of new home designs. With the help of MSKTD and Associates, Habitat was able to introduce a new home design called the Bauer that included three bedrooms, one bath and 1,100-square-feet of living space.

The architecture was completely reworked by MSKTD to create a stylish and desirable ranch home that would appraise for the cost to build it. These new home designs will continue to be used in other areas Habitat builds within the city of Fort Wayne, including Renaissance Pointe, Mount Vernon Park and Oxford neighborhoods.
