A Day of Rest

If God truly wanted us to rest on Sunday, he wouldnt have inspired that

first fellow to attempt hitting a target a hundred meters away with a little

leather ball and a stick. Of course, theres also that little issue about not

taking the Lords name in vain. Since that first swing, people have devoted

Sundays to chasing a little white ball from fairway to fairway, or to being

glued to the television watching those born with enough talent and

patience - to make a career out of chasing that ball. Golf is, after all, one

of the only games where within a span of minutes one can go from being

taught a bitter lesson in humility to witnessing what must surely be divine in-

tervention - when the trinity of body, club and ball meld into one and out of

the darkness of shanks, slices and grounders comes a Hallelujah-filled chorus

urging an impossible 62-foot putt to effortlessly drop in for eagle.

Sunday is also the day we celebrate our golf heroes. It is a day when the last

few holes of a tournament can become a race to the finish linewhere

unseen forces can cause odds-on favorites to inexplicably falter off the tee

and inspire a Tour unknown to quietly make a run up the leaderboard.

And at the conclusion of a weeklong fairway battle, we love to cheer our

champion as he hoists that trophy aloft. Because we know he is raising it for

us all for those who have endured the love/hate relationship that is golf.

And with that, our Sunday greenside service concludes with a reverent

Amen, brother.

the Stanford St. Jude Championship

The driving theme behind the Stanford St. Jude Championship is Desire.

Desire to continue a 51-year history of world-class golf. Desire to elevate

and continually enhance player and fan experience. But most importantly,

a Desire to help St. Jude Childrens Research Hospitals mission to find

cures and save children.

Maybe the reason this message rings so true with so many who play, attend

and volunteer can be traced back to a prevailing Southern philosophy of

lending a hand to a neighbor in need. In this case, the neighbor just happens

to be any child, anywhere on the planet, who has come face-to-face with

cancer or one of any number of life-threatening diseases.

This special tournament has generated more that $24 million toward giving

these children and their families a true second chance at life. The 2007

tournament hosted over 111,000 attendees and almost 7 million viewers on

Sunday alone. The corollary was the largest single tournament donation of

$1.76mm.

The South is, nevertheless, known for its abundant idiosyncrasies; its well-

documented character and its hard and fast grasp on heritage. The South is

a place where the roots of tradition run deep. So deep, in fact, that neither

time, nor politics nor technology can erode them.

Simply stated, Seersucker Sunday at the Stanford St. Jude Championship is

the genesis of a tradition.

This day allows tens of thousands of golf fans to display their individual styles

while coming together around common passion and cause. The seersucker

revolution will be televised. Seersucker Sunday is the crescendo to a tournament

that is so much more than a week of golf.

Professional golf has the Claret Jug, the Ryder Cup and the Wannamaker

Trophy. But there is only one jacket. A jacket so sacred so fabled - that

when donned, the wearer is instantly placed into the pages of golf history.

That, of course, is the legendary Green Jacket of Augusta.

Turning to the timeless tradition and bold style of seersucker, the Stanford

St. Jude Championship is ready to create the next one and only jacket on the

TOUR. As an integral part of the Seersucker Sunday concept, we would be

honored to see this distinctive creation designed in the studios of Ralph Lauren.

the Uniform

Vijay Singh, Sergio Garcia, Lee Trevino, Greg Norman, Bill Murray, Brett

Favre - These names among hundreds of other celebrated golfers and

celebrities make the Stanford St. Jude Championship an annual success

and raise millions of dollars for St. Jude.

However, it is the 1,850 volunteers who have devoted hundreds of thousands

of hours that truly make it happen. These people - some with more than

50 years inside the ropes all love the game of golf. But it is simply their

passion for giving children who face cancer and other catastrophic diseases

a second chance that motivates this army of angels to endure hours in the

Memphis heat to see tournament week to successful fruition.

In the spirit of Seersucker Sunday, the Stanford St. Jude Championship

plans to dress every volunteer in seersucker shorts and white Polo shirts.

The shorts would be available in both blue striped and green stripes to

coordinate with the tournaments official colors.

the Last Word

It is apparent that the Ralph Lauren / POLO brands understand the inherent

power of golf, as evidenced by the current testimony relationships with

Luke Donald, Morgan Pressel, Davis Love and the beloved Tom Watson.

Seersucker Sunday offers one of those genuinely unprecedented

opportunities to be present, but more notably, to be play an elemental

role in this fountainhead event.

Like the Ralph Lauren brands, the Stanford St. Jude Championship understands

what it takes to grab onto a dream and transform it into a living, breathing

reality. The stars are aligned and from here, those stars appear to have
