Sega’s classic light gun shooter franchise will
blast to a new level in 2009, with an exclusive
Wii version, in this pulp-style prequel serving
up a healthy helping of mayhem.
The core of the gameplay experience is mercifully
(or mercilessly) familiar. Players aim their light gun – in
this case the Wii Remote – at the screen and shoot the
living (dead) crap out of wave after wave of zombies.
But there are plenty of twists, and a whole new
story. In fact, a whole new backstory.
Developed from the ground up for Nintendo’s Wii,
House of the Dead: Overkill starts with Agent G fresh
out of the academy, bursting with ideals and
enthusiasm. He teams up with hard-boiled Agent
Washington to investigate reports of unexplained
disappearances in small-town Louisiana.
What they find comes as a horrific surprise:
bloody mutant horror and streets stalked by killer
zombies. Everyone’s infected, from redneck locals to
doctors and nurses still in their ripped uniforms.
The look and feel of the whole experience has a
sort of 50s B-movie chic to it. With dialogue to match.
It all adds up to create an atmosphere that will
appeal to film and comic book fans everywhere.
There’s no compromise or let up in the action,
either. The light gun action is non-stop, with players
having to mow down row after row of zombies.
Players can use ‘Slow Mo-Fo Time’ to take the
perfect headshot, with gore-splattered results. Then
there’s the ‘Evil Eye’ option, used to spot chances to
get right in amongst a whole swarm and send
everything up in flames. Up close, the Wii Remote can
be used to pistol whip zombie jaws or cave heads in.
The addition of Agent Washington as a strong
secondary character makes co-operative play an
involving proposition. Two friends blasting away
become classic cop buddies: the grizzled veteran and
the idealistic rookie, totally reliant on each other.

MadworldFORMAT: WiiRELEASE DATE: March 2009
There has been a palpable buzz about MADWORLD
for some time now, and as its release date swings into
view, it’s easy to see just why it’s caused such a stir.
For a start, there’s the stark and striking stylised look
of the game. Inspired by classic comics and graphic
novels, it is almost entirely black and white, with the odd
splash of red as blood spills.
And blood will spill. MADWORLD is a game of life and
death where only the strong (and ruthless) survive.
Players take the role of Jack, an innocent man caught up
in the murderous world of Death Watch, a deadly ‘game’
dreamt up by outlawed terrorist group, ‘The Organizers’.
The high stakes set-up is reminiscent of classic futuristic
movies such as Running Man.
It is brutal from the off, with Jack having to fight hand-
to-hand as well as perfect the use of a whole array of
weapons to be found in the environment. Expert use of the
Wii Remote and Nunchuck will be invaluable. The more
clinical and creative the kill, the more points will be earned.
As well as his ultimate quest to survive the
competition and uncover the secret behind Death
Watch, there is a staged series of Challenges that can
also be used to rack up big points and played as
standalone mini-games - all of which offer true
multiplayer mode.
The action is intense and adds up to a proper
hardcore gaming experience, the like of which
has never before been seen on the Wii.
The darkness, however, does have the edge
taken off it by an ever-present sense of
irreverent humour and exaggerated characters
wreaking cartoon style havoc.
MADWORLD is over-the-top and extreme in
every sense, destined to be a landmark game
on a format that may well be family friendly
but can also deliver a real killer blow.

Empire: Total War FORMAT: PCRELEASE DATE: March 4th
The Total War series is one of the most respected and
successful franchises in PC gaming. This fifth iteration
is the greatest to date, setting new standards not just
for the series but in the wider PC RTS genre.
The pattern with Total War is for evolution to follow
revolution; for enhancements and improvements to be
added after ground-breaking leaps forward. Total War:
Empire sees us at the revolutionary stage of the cycle,
marking a radical departure via an all new game engine,
brand new settings and, for the first time ever, naval combat.
It starts in 1700, amidst civil war and the founding of the
United States of America - and in the era of High Seas warfare.
The campaign spans Europe, America and the East, with
players becoming general, admiral and even emperor of their
nation in the volatile and still shifting 18th Century world.
It is a pivotal time not just in the shaping of modern geo-
political boundaries, but also in the very nature of warfare, as
technology starts to influence the battlefield - but still with
plenty of room for tactics, courage and, occasionally, diplomacy.
The epic scale of the conflict is balanced by the easy
accessibility of the action. On land or sea, this is stirring stuff,
with the whiff of gunpowder never far away.
The easiest way into the heart of the game is through a
narrative-driven single player campaign mode called The Road
to Independence. Here, players experience three different
stages of America’s battle to transform itself from a defiant
colony to an independent world power, switching roles from a
stalwart of the occupying British forces to a leader of the
revolution overseeing the birth of a nation.
For newcomers, it’s a crash course in all aspects of
Total War, and a stepping stone towards broader
battles in which they take charge of whole units.
Empire: Total War has been created with
feedback from the franchise’s huge, dedicated
fan base in mind right from the get-go. It is a cast
iron certainty to prove a huge hit with them and
to expand the brand’s audience even further.

StormriseFORMAT: PS3, Xbox 360, PC
RELEASE DATE: March
Stormrise is a state-of-the-art RTS
created from the ground up for
consoles. The result is a game that
combines real depth and intelligence with
frenetic action and intuitive control: instantly
accessible, but endlessly challenging.
It has been developed by The Creative
Assembly (Australia) and is the first project it
has aimed squarely at the console market.
The experience, pedigree and
expertise behind the game has
resulted in a title that will be critically
acclaimed and instantly elevated to
the elite ranks of market leaders.
The action takes place on a bleak
and barren earth that remains
devastated after a catastrophic event
centuries in the past. The
technologically advanced Echelon and
the more tribal Sai are now fighting to
survive in a hostile environment.
Their battle is waged in the air, across
rooftops, on the ground and even under
the ground, a state of play that
introduces the concept of
‘verticality’ to players’ strategies.
But whilst the tactics can be
complex and multilayered, the
‘WHIP SELECT’ TM control
system simplifies the
logistics of navigation that
has previously proved to be
such a stumbling block for
this genre on consoles.

Sonic and the Black Knight
FORMAT: WiiRELEASE DATE: March
Sonic and the Black Knight sees one of gaming’s
greatest heroes land in the rich and colourful
world of King Arthur’s Camelot.
Created exclusively for the Wii, it’s
completely different to anything
Sonic has experienced
before, as he uses his
lightning speed
and super quick
sword combos,
executed by
the player
using the Wii
Remote, to battle
his medieval foes.
Having been propelled
to Camelot by the
granddaughter of Merlin himself, Sonic
comes up against fearsome knights and other
bizarre creatures whilst also having to scale
castle walls and be fired across moats.
Sonic and the Black Knight is a return to the
Sonic storybook series, which began with the
acclaimed hit Sonic and the Secret Rings.
The game, which can be enjoyed by up to four
players, makes the most of the Wii’s Remote and
Nunchuck controls. Players level-up as they progress,
gaining access to special attacks and powers that are
geared to fit their preferred style of gameplay, all
building towards a showdown with a mysterious
villain who threatens the existence of Camelot itself.
Sonic and the Black Knight sees a classic character
running riot in a legendary land where blades flash
and magic happens.
