You are all a very professional and dynamic member- ship, and I commend all the workers and supporters. Thanks to Dianne and Douglas for their technical leadership, and especially formatting this unique SEGUE. We are thankful that they are recovering well from their horrific car accident while returning from San- ta Fe to Albuquerque one day in December. Our Executive-Secretary Jeanne Grealish knows all the history and answers to our many questions... Thanks, Jeanne, for your emails and words of wisdom! Please note all the activities and highlights of PMTNM in the re- cent months. After the MTNA conference April 2-7 in San Antonio, we will report on the state of the music profession. We will be cheering our two MTNA contes- tants at the competitions. Please let me know if you are planning to attend... ...... and I am off to Iceland and Ireland with daughter Jill and family. Students didn't shed a tear when I indicated a week of no lessons! Pressley Gao wins Jackie McGehee Young Artists’ Concerto Competition Presley Gao, 13, won The Music Guild of New Mexico's Jackie McGehee Young Artists' Competition Feb. 13 at UNM’s Keller Hall. Gao played the first movement of the Schumann Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54, accompanied by his teacher, Steinway Artist Jacquelyn Helin, on the second piano. As the first place winner, Gao received a cash award of $2,000 plus several solo performances with the New Mexico Philharmonic.

Spotlight on Students Southwest MTNA Division Winners—Two New Mexico students will represent the Southwest Division at the national MTNA Junior/Senior and Young Artist Competitions in San Antonio April 2-7, 2016.
• Violinist Natalie Franz, a student of Carmelo de los Santos, will compete in the Junior/Senior Strings category.
• Saxophonist Matthew Koester, a student of Eric Lau, will compete in the Young Artist/Woodwinds category.

S E G U EComposition Winners and Ensemble Recital - More Than One is Twice the Fun (or Three Times, Four Times…) The 2015 Composition Winners’ and Ensemble Recital highlighted Student Festival Day from 2:15 - 3:30 p.m. in the Gathering Room at St. John’s United Methodist in Santa Fe. The Ensemble recital is a non-competitive event open to stu-dents of ALL ages. Teachers and parents join their children and students as part of the en-sembles. Six duos participated in the program. The three winners of Student Composition Competition also performed their original works.

Vocal Artistry Art Song Festival to mark seventh edition of event—April 22-24, 2016 at Albuquerque Academy. Application deadline for this year’s edition of the Vocal Artistry Art Song Festival is April 1. The theme for this year is Canciones Españolas. Featured faculty will include Benita Va-lente and Guillermo Figueroa, along with pianist Debra Ayers. New to the program this year is an Adult Division for singers over 30. TEACHER of theYEAR, 2015—Dianne Brehmer Bailey After accepting the award, Dianne made the following remarks: Thank you, Sharon, my fellow PMTNM members, friends and guests. First on the list of people who have supported me along the journey, I want to thank my husband, Douglas Bailey. Without him, I would not be standing here before you. Next, I want to thank Jeanne Grealish, my voice teacher, mentor, and dear friend. Jeanne is a wonderful model of how to serve students, parents, colleagues and stay human at the same time. There are many others to whom I owe great debts of gratitude for their support and belief in me along my professional, musical, personal, and spiritual path. To all I say thank you from the deepest corners of my soul. I am profoundly humbled by this award. As most of you know, I began my professional life as a church musician. While I am no longer active in that field, I find the poetry of hymn texts expresses thoughts much more effectively than I can. So I want to close with a hymn-poem which, al-though it comes out of a specific, denominational tradition, speaks to me of the joy
music can bring to people of all faiths and colors, no matter what their ethnicity, orientation or political, economic, or social position in life. In short, music brings joy to every human heart. “When in our music God is glorified, and adoration leaves no room for pride, it is as though the whole creation cried, Al-leluia! Note to teachers: the Weed Scholarship is open to all performers, both vocal and instrumental. The application for this scholarship involves three parts: one for the student, one for the music teacher, and one for the school teacher. The Danfelser Scholarship is for pianists only and the application requires two parts, one each from student and music teachers. Spotlight on Members — Eunice Schumpert Honored The 48th annual Friends of Music Concert at Eastern New Mexico University in November honored Eunice Schumpert, a life member of PMTNM. At age 94, Eunice has taught piano and voice in eastern New Mexico for 70 years. Over the course of her career, she has taught more than 1,000 students. Currently she teaches only 12 or 13 students, a much smaller teaching load than the 50-60 students she wel-comed weekly in the past. Congratulations, Eunice! (Thanks to Ferrell Roberts for submitting this item.) Rest in Peace, Evelyn Losack, Longtime PMTNM member Evelyn Losack died January 10, 2016. Evelyn will be remembered by her many musical friends as a hard-working supporter of the arts, locally and around the state. Evelyn earned a degree in music from UNM and taught independently for 62 years. In addition, she supervised music programs at five elementary schools and helped to found a number of community organizations involving both the arts and culture and agriculture and community development. A funeral mass was held on January 13 at San Ysidro Church in Corrales.
