35 YEARS OF COMMITMENTAND HARD-WORK

On 11 February 2015, Peter Kometsi celebrated three-and-a-half decades – 35 years – as a Gold Fields employee. Peter started his career in Gold Fields as a security guard under the then Gold Fields Protection Services and has gained extensive experience over the years.

“My line of work requires selflessness because you are hired to protect Gold Fields employees. So the safety and protection of Gold Fields employees is my priority,” said Peter.

HOSTEL WARD ELECTIONSOn 17 March South Deep hostel residents took part in ward elections to choose their new hostel governors. Hostel governors are responsible for the daily running and maintenance of the hostel, ensuring that facilities are kept in a good clean condition and hostel residential issues are attended to. The purpose of these elections is to ensure that hostel governors are democratically elected by the people they serve. The governors are a link between hostel residents and hostel management. The new full time leaders will serve a three-year term.

Peter says his success in life comes from being assertive, trying to do the right thing at the right time and treating other people with respect – one of Gold Fields’ core values. Shannon Patrick, Head of Security, described

Peter as an approachable person who does not hesitate to make himself available to assist and address matters.

“He is like this not just with his own team but also to the wider mine community and business partners. His experience as a soccer coach will often shine through in his approach to addressing individuals,” said Shannon Ntsimbi, as some of his colleagues know him, shared some of the toughest challenges he has faced. “Dealing with tribal factions in the mid-80s was very difficult and at times, I found myself in the middle of two flames, but I managed the situations successfully,” he said.

Peter’s advice to fellow Gold Fields employees is to live an authentic life and not allow the outside world to determine your decisions – both at work and in your private life.

Currently Peter Kometsi works as a Superintendent Protection Services; he is happily married and has three children and four grandchildren.

“ My line of work requires selflessness because you are hired to protect Gold Fields employees. ”

HOSTEL UPGRADESOn 12 December 2014, Blessed Mazibuko, Finance Manager handed over the certification of completion to the two contractors who were responsible for the renovations.

The newly renovated hostel now consists of two bedrooms units, a shower, toilet and an open-plan kitchen. South Deep has furnished all 848 rooms with new three-quarter beds and wardrobes. The Hostel upgrades were part of the 2014 mining charter commitments to achieve 1 person per room by 2014. The mine has reached and exceeded this milestone as 691 employees currently reside in the hostel and 848 rooms were completed meaning that there are additional rooms available.

The much-anticipated hostel upgrade at South Deep has been completed.

Thousands of employees and their families then gathered at the South Deep Emoyeni Stadium to pay their last respects and celebrate the lives of their fellow colleagues. Bishop Marcus Marungwane led the ceremony in prayer, while Acting Head of Safety, Edwin Matlapeng, paid tribute to all the deceased employees on behalf of management: “Let us remember our colleagues, their memories and the legacy they left at South Deep as we work towards making health and safety a way of life. We owe them more than our prayers. We owe them action. We owe them accountability; let us learn from these incidents, let us explore the solutions and let us work together to achieve that which we know is possible.”

SOUTH DEEP CLEANSING CEREMONY REMEMBERS FALLEN COLLEAGUES

The day began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Wall of Remembrance, which was built to commemorate employees who have lost their lives. South Deep management, organised labour and families of the late employees gathered at Twin Shaft in the morning for a prayer event.

South Deep held a much-anticipated mine-wide Cleansing Ceremony and Day of Prayer on 1 May 2015 to commemorate the lives of all employees who have died in the line of duty, and to pay respect to their families.

FOCUS ON PEOPLE

A number of local traditional African music and gospel groups performed at the ceremony, which was characterised by a strong sense of unity and celebration of those lives that were lost.

On the preceding Wednesday, a bull was slaughtered at Twin Shaft. This important traditional African ceremony is held after the death of a person to ensure that their spirit is taken back to its native home and the person can rest in peace. It is also believed that releasing a person’s spirit from a place of an accident will prevent further accidents in future.

Appropriately, 1 May marked seven years since 9 employees were involved in fatal accident on the shaft on 1 May 2008.

FOCUS ON OPERATIONS

INVESTORS VISIT SOUTH DEEPOn 13 February South Deep hosted a group of 40 analysts on the mine to share insights into Gold Fields’ annual performance for 2014 and South Deep’s plans for 2015. This gathering also gave analysts an opportunity to ask key questions about South Deep’s future. Nico Muller Executive Vice President for South Africa Region emphasised the importance of building a culture of team work as one of the key success drivers for South Deep.

ISO 14001 CERTIFICATION South Deep reached a significant milestone when it received the official certification for the ISO 14001:2004 standard. This certification provides assurance that South Deep meets the highest environmental quality standards and that the environmental impacts of the business are being continuously measured and improved through a formal environmental management system.

The Environmental Department would like to thank everyone who participated during the audit, this could only be achieved through commitment and team work.

WITH HOST COMMUNITIESENGAGINGThe South Deep Community Relations Team regularly holds community meetings to ensure that the mine stays in touch with communities and works with them to identify areas of concern. These concerns are often addressed through community projects that part of the SLP commitments.

Recent community meetings include the Thusanang Community meeting, held in February, the next community meeting will be held in Jachfontein.

South Deep seeks to build and maintain positive, sustainable relationships with our host communities.

FOCUS ON COMMUNITY

150 HOMES

This is one of the projects undertaken by the mine in partnership with the Westonaria Local Municipality to support Local Economic Development in the host community. The four-room houses consist of two bedrooms, a semi-furnished kitchen, open-plan lounge and a combined shower and toilet. The houses were officially handed over to the Premier of Gauteng Mr David Makhura, Westonaria Local Municipality and the Department of Human Settlements at an event held in December 2014.

South Deep has built 150 homes in Westonaria Borwa as part of its Social and Labour Plan (SLP) commitments. Families from the Westonaria community benefited from this project, which was completed at the end of 2014.

OF FORMER STRUGGLE HEROESOn 3 March 2015, South Deep – through its Social and Labour Plan (SLP) initiatives – officially handed over the newly restored Ilanga building at Healdtown College, a Methodist school located near Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape. Prominent former pupils include Nelson Mandela; Robert Sobukwe, founder of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC); Jonathan Mehlo Rayo, PAC party member; and Raymond Mhlaba, ANC leader.

The building, which will be renamed the Gold Fields Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Building at a function to be held in May 2015, comprises a library, museum, science and computer laboratories, as well as five classrooms.

Gold Fields participated in the restoration of the school (now named Heraldtown Comprehensive School) in line with the mine’s focus on education, as well as the alignment of values between the South Deep Education Trust and the Historic Schools Restoration Project (HSRP). Both organisations aim to provide higher quality education to uplift and empower historically disadvantaged communities and organisations. The project, which started in 2013, was completed in January 2015 at a total cost of R3.5 million and created 20 local jobs and empowered two local SMMEs.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

Six ABET learners who completed ABET Level 4 in 2013 got an opportunity to undergo a six-week hands-on machinery training programme at the South Deep TM3 training centre as part of their career progression plan.

LEARNER ARTISANS RECEIVE MERIT AWARDS

Among the learners was Mandiphiwe Mgudu (also known as Mandy) from Quma in the Eastern Cape. Mandy was the only woman from South Deep to receive a merit award for Best learner in Basic Fitter and Machinery. Mandy says she chose this trade because she was looking for a challenge and she is looking forward to working on massive engines and hydraulics to prove that women can excel in the field.

Another learner who received a merit – for Best Boilermaker Learner – is Siyabonga Gama from Bizana in the Eastern Cape. He knew from the beginning that this opportunity would be the turning point

Sipho Dlamini, Letuka Rajane, Minini Nameka, Thabiso Khereng, Nkofi Ramochela, and Siphokazi Vokwana (the only woman in the group) received training on the UV, LHD and Dump Truck machines. The training consisted of theory and practical training sessions where learners learnt how to operate the machines.

South Deep recently sent 95 employees to the Engineering Skills Training Centre (ESTC) in Randfontein to enhance their basic skills in engineering. The group of learner artisans included business partners and people from host communities.

in his life and he says he will be forever grateful to South Deep for giving him this chance.

Education Training and Development (ETD) Supervisor Engineering John Robertson encouraged the learners to continue to work hard and strive to be the best at all times. “I would like to congratulate the learners who received awards. To all the learners, keep focused and committed as you progress through your learnership. Remember you will have a second opportunity during your advanced training to strive for a merit award. Your future lies in your hands,” said John.

“ I received a lot of criticism from some friends and colleagues, but I am glad I was never discouraged. I focused on what I believed in and today I am reaping the results of commitment and dedication.SIPHO DLAMINI, TRAINEE ”
