The Friends of The Ohio State University Libraries provides members access to OSU’s outstanding collections and resources, along with special benefits designed to enhance the value of your gift. Being a Friends’ member entitles you to a number of benefits, including:

A Friends’ membership/library card

Borrowing privileges at the OSU Libraries

Access to a selection of online databases

The Friends of the Libraries newsletter

In addition, your membership dollars support endowments and bequests that improve the quality of the Libraries’ collections; promote public awareness of the services and resources of the OSU Libraries, and share your interest in libraries, books, collecting and the advancement of learning. The Friends provide critical support for:

Expanding acquisition, preservation and conservation activities of library holdings

Building endowments, bequests, and gifts of money and materials

Developing and implementing innovative library programs and exhibits

Providing student book awards and scholarships

Raising public awareness of OSU Libraries’ services and resources

Your membership dollars will automatically go to support the operation of the Friends in providing the benefits listed. However, if you would like to designate your gift for a specific endowment or library unit, you can do that when you complete the membership application. Choices include:

The Friends of the OSU Libraries: (all contributions go to this group unless designated otherwise): Provide support to the OSU library system and offers the benefits listed.

The Friends of the OSU Libraries Endowment Fund: Money from the fund is used for the purchase of library materials, equipment, personnel, preservation and other purposes deemed beneficial by the Director of University Libraries.

The Friends of the Libraries Preservation Fund: Established by Emanuel and Ann Rudolph, the fund supports the preservation of library materials.

The Friends of the OSU Libraries’ Student Book Collector’s Scholarship Contest Fund: Established by Emanuel and Ann Rudolph, the fund supports activities and scholarships related to the contest.

Byrd Polar Research Center Archival Program: This esteemed collection documents the investigation and exploration of the world’s polar regions.

Cartoon Library and Museum: Gifts enable the continued growth of one of the nation’s finest collections of American printed cartoon art.

Hilandar Research Library: Supporting medieval Slavic research through the world’s largest microform collection.

Historic Costumes & Textiles: This scholarly and artistic resource of apparel and textile material is jointly administered by the Libraries and the College of Human Ecology.

Jerome Lawrence & Robert E. Lee Theatre Research Institute: Supports the growth of research in the theatre arts and live performance.

John Glenn Archives: Glenn donated his papers and memorabilia to The Ohio State University in conjunction with the formation of the John Glenn Institute. The archives is open for research by students, faculty and the general public.

Logan Elm Press: Preserves the traditions of centuries-old book arts and fine printmaking.

Rare Books and Manuscripts: Choose to support this spectacular collection of primary source materials and supporting published works.

Membership Levels

Friends of the LibraryIndividual Member/$50Joint (2) Members/$75

Members at this level can borrow materials and access select electronic resources. Friends receive a membership/borrower’s card, a subscription to the expanded Friends of the Libraries newsletter, and invitations to activities and special events featuring noted authors and speakers.

Library Advocates$250 In addition to Friends’ membership benefits, Library Advocates are offered “behind the scenes” events, special publications and discounts on publications from the Logan Elm Press.

Thompson Circle$1,500 Members of the Thompson Circle receive recognition at the Thompson Library, exclusive tours of the Libraries’ special collections with the system’s curators, and discounts on library rental fees. Thompson Circle members also enjoy the benefits provided to Friends and Library Advocates.

Corporate Membership$350 Employees of corporations or non-profit organizations can utilize the company’s membership to borrow materials and access select electronic resources.
