Painted (Ghost) Signs in the City of Port Phillip The City of Port Phillip has a long mercantile history extending from the mid-19th century. Aspects of this history are captured in painted signs on private and commercial buildings throughout the municipality in the former Cities of Port Melbourne, South Melbourne and St Kilda. A selection of these signs were included in a community conservation project 'Painted (Ghost) Signs in the City of Port Phillip' which ran from 2014 to 2015. This project was a collaboration between heritage specialists, community members and groups, and staff and students from the Centre of Cultural Materials Conservation of the University of Melbourne and the City of Port Phillip. The project was established to generate an inclusive and locally relevant methodology to document, interpret and ensure continued access to significant painted signs. The list below are the signs recorded and assessed as part of the project.
