Foreword:
Piano ragtime music has been a much loved American tradition since the beginning of
the 20th century. For the past 70 years, percussionists have been arranging pianoragtime classics for xylophone and accompaniment. Percussion groups such as Nexus
and institutions such as the Bob Becker Ragtime School have created many
arrangements to include xylophone solo and marimba band accompaniment, usually
involving 3-4 percussionists playing on 2 marimbas. This ensemble has a very unique
sound that is warm yet playful.
The intention of this small collection is to inspire the next generation of percussionists
to fall in love with the ragtime tradition. Players should take turns playing the
xylophone solo and playing the other parts. Improvising during repeats is an extremely
common technique and is recommended for more advanced players.
Most of the dynamics and phrasing you see are edited in. All music, no matter what it
is, should be brought to life through both dynamics and phrasing and ragtime is no
different. Dynamics and phrasing are not final: they are just a suggestion and should
be followed whenever deemed appropriate.

Suggested set up:
It is preferred that the marimba for Player II and Player IV be a 5 octave marimba. If
not, Player IV should move the lowest notes up the octave.
