Page 4: SelexION® and SelexION®+ Technology Site Planning Guide

This guide is for the site planner, the individual responsible for preparing the facility for the installation of theSelexION

® differential mobility separation technology device for 5500 and 6500 series instruments or the SelexION

®+

differential mobility separation technology for 6500+ series instruments.

The information in this guide supplements the information contained in the Site Planning Guide for the massspectrometer. The laboratory must meet the conditions detailed in both the mass spectrometer Site PlanningGuide and this Site Planning Guide before the Field Service Employee (FSE) can install the SelexION

® or

SelexION®+ technology.

Customer Site Planner ResponsibilitiesComplete the Site Planning Checklist on page 6, in consultation with facilities services personnel (gas, electrical, ventilation, and information technology [IT]), and return it to the FSE before the completion date. Referto Signoff on page 12.

Note: The FSE will follow up if the checklist is not received prior to the scheduled installation date.

• Verify that adequate space and the required shipping facilities are available. Refer to Site LayoutRequirements on page 13.

• Provide all required electrical receptacles. Refer to Electrical Requirements on page 14.

• Provide all required regulators, shut off valves, and gases. Refer to Gas Supply Requirements on page16.

• Provide and install all required vents and ventilation devices. Refer to Ventilation and Waste CollectionRequirements on page 19.

• Verify that the requirements for the operating environment are met. Refer to Environmental Requirementson page 20.

• Provide all required solutions and laboratory equipment, including all fittings, and sample tubing for the liquidchromatography (LC) equipment, unless purchased from SCIEX. Refer to Customer-Supplied Solutionsand Equipment on page 22.

• When the shipment arrives, inspect the packaging for damage and then contact SCIEX Customer Service orthe local FSE to schedule the installation.

FSE Responsibilities• Review the checklist and discuss outstanding issues with the site planner.

• Test and qualify the system to the specifications in the Installation Checklist and Data Log.

During InstallationThe FSE unpacks the system (with the assistance of customer staff), sets up the system, and then confirms itsoperation. When the system reaches proper vacuum, the FSE conducts system performance tests.

Operator FamiliarizationDuring installation, the FSE provides a system and software overview, reviews data, and provides some basicoperator familiarization.

Note: Online training is available at sciex.com/education .

Technical SupportSCIEX and its representatives maintain a staff of fully-trained service and technical specialists located throughoutthe world. They can answer questions about the system or any technical issues that might arise. For moreinformation, visit the Web site at sciex.com.

Electrical RequirementsReturn to checklist.

WARNING! Electrical Shock Hazard. Use only qualified personnel for the installationof all electrical supplies and fixtures, and make sure that all installations adhere tolocal regulations and safety standards.

WARNING! Electrical Shock Hazard. Do not connect the SelexION®or SelexION

technology to the same branch circuit as either the mass spectrometer or theroughing pump.

The total combined system (mass spectrometer, roughing pump, and SelexION® or SelexION

®+ technology) powerconsumption is• 5500 systems: 3400 VA (50 Hz or 60 Hz) at 230 VAC

• 6500/6500+ systems: 4600 VA (50 Hz or 60 Hz) at 230 VAC

Mains Supply Connections• Provide a branch circuit for the SelexION

® or SelexION

®+ technology. The SelexION® controller module can be

connected to the same branch circuit as the acquisition computer.

• For installations outside North America, use locally approved standard connections and cables.

• For installation in North America, use a 15 A branch circuit equipped with NEMA 6-15R straight blade receptacles(208 VAC or 240 VAC).

An external line transformer is not required.

Mains Supply FluctuationsIn areas where the mains supply is subject to voltage fluctuations exceeding of the nominal value a powerconditioner is required. High or low voltages can adversely affect the electronic components of the massspectrometer. Refer to Uninterruptible Power Supply or Power Conditioner on page 15.

Protective Earth Conductor

WARNING! Electrical Shock Hazard. Do not intentionally interrupt the protectiveearth conductor. Any interruption of the protective earth conductor will create anelectrical shock hazard.

The mains supply must include a correctly installed protective earth conductor that must be installed or checkedby a qualified electrician before the system is connected.

WARNING! Radiation Hazard, Biohazard, or Toxic Chemical Hazard. Use onlyqualified personnel for the installation of all gas supplies and connections, and make sure that all installations adhere to local regulations and safetystandards.

CAUTION: Potential System Damage. Regulate each supply separately at the massspectrometer to prevent over pressure damage to the mass spectrometer.

CAUTION: Potential System Contamination. Use compression fittings for gas line connections.Do not use liquid pipe sealant. If threaded fittings must be used, then Teflon tape can beused to seal the threads. Do not use soldered fittings unless the tubing is thoroughlycleaned afterwards.

The 5500 or 6500 series system equipped with the SelexION® technology or the 6500+ series system equipped

with the SelexION®+ technology requires specific gas flows. Use high-pressure liquid nitrogen dewars or

Sound Pressure Level

68 dBAMaximum sound pressure level (at the ion source)

6500 and 6500+ Systems

64 dBAAverage source pressure level

74 dBAMaximum sound pressure level (at the ion source)

A sound pressure level of 85 dBA above a reference sound pressure of 20 μPa is at present regarded by manyauthorities as the threshold at which a hazard might be caused. Special means, such as the use of protective earpieces, can make a higher sound pressure level non-hazardous to the operator.

SCIEX recommends that the sound pressure level be measured or calculated by the user both at the operator'sposition in normal use and at whatever point 1 m from the enclosure of the equipment has the highest soundpressure level.
