What is a Wall Flashing ? Flashing refers to thin continuous pieces of sheet

metal or other impervious material installed toprevent the passage of water into a structure from an

angle or joint. Flashing generally operates on theprinciple that, for water to penetrate a joint, it mustwork itself upward against the force of gravity or in thecase of wind-driven rain, it would have to follow a

tortuous path during which the driving force will bedissipated. Exterior building materials can beconfigured with a non-continuous profile to defeatwater surface tension.

Flashing may be exposed or concealed.Exposed flashing is usually of a sheet metal,

    such as aluminium, copper, painted

galvanized steel, stainless steel, zinc alloy, terne metal, lead or lead-coated copper.

Metal flashing should be provided with

expansion joints on long runs to preventdeformation of the metal sheets.

Advantages Fully bondedcontinuous adhesion to the

substrate resists wind loads and prevents water

    tracking behind the tape

    Waterproof and impermeable to moisture

impermeable to the passage of liquid water and

    water vapor

    Preparatory Work

Apply Wall Flashing and accessories only in fairweather when air and surface

    temperatures are above 25F (-4C).

Wherever wallflashing isto be applied, the surface

must be smooth, clean, dry and free of voids,

spalled areas, loose substrate, loose nails, sharp

protrusions or other matterthat will hinderthe

    adhesion or uniformity ofthe wallflashing

installation.Clean loose dust or dirtfrom the

surface by wiping with a clean dry cloth or a brush.

Flashing Application Pre-cut Wall Flashing to easilyhandled lengths.

Peel release paper from roll toexpose rubberizedasphalt and carefully position flashingagainstsubstrate.

Press firmly into place with a steel hand roller or

the back of a utility knife as soon as possible, fullyadhering the flashing to the substrate to prevent

water from migrating under the Wall Flashing.

Form end dams at horizontal flashingterminations to prevent water entry. Overlapadjacent pieces 2 in. (51 mm) and roll overlap withasteel hand roller.
