INTRODUCTION
The Department of Geology, University of Karachi is one of the oldest institutions for teaching
geology in the country which started functioning in 1954. The journey of progress and development
is still continued since the establishment of the department. Staff members obtaining higher degrees
and advanced trainings imparted their experience and knowledge to the young future geologists. The
department is determined to keep the pace of development of the field of geology and has introduced
a variety of subjects like Geochemistry, Petroleum Geology, Geomorphology, Sedimentology,
Marine Geology, Economic Geology, Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology, Geophysics and
Environmental Geology.
The department of Geology has produced a large number of graduates. Most of our graduates hold
key positions in national and multi- national organizations and have made significant contribution in
their field of specialization. Department has good history in producing M. Phil.s and Ph.D.s A
number of research projects in collaboration with national institutions and multinational companies
are in progress. Staff members of the department have also published numerous research articles in
journal of national and international repute having high impact factor.
The department has an impressive geology museum which houses a large collection of valuable
rocks fossils and mineral specimen. The department has a wide range of advanced laboratories
facilities. There are well equipped research/teaching Geochemistry, Sedimentology, Economic
Geology, Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology, Geophysics and Environmental Geology. The
department also has a seminar and a reference library with a reasonable collection of books and
journals.
The department also organizes technical lectures and seminars, conducted by professionals to
develop sound knowledge and skills in the students for their career building. Students also
participate in student chapters of many renowned/ learned societies of geological orientation such as
AAPG, PAPG, SPE, KUGAA and SEGMITE. Geological field works in the selected areas of the
country as an essential part of the curriculum are conducted by the faculty for students‟ practical
training.

Criterion-1: Program Mission, Objectives and Outcomes
Mission Statement of the Department of Geology:
The mission of our department is to provide high-quality Graduate and Postgraduate education
leading to Ph.D. It is our aim to achieve excellence in teaching and research to interact with society.
The department provides sound geological knowledge, which is used to pursue a meaningful career
in different disciplines of geosciences and train future professional geologists for the country. Our
mission is also to produce competent manpower to compete the challenges around the Globe. For
good liaison among academia and industry, we strive to attach our students in different phases of
training and research during summer internship. We focus on development and management of
natural resources, assessment of natural hazards, environmental issues and all other related problems
of geology, especially in Sindh and Balochistan. The department conducts research and management
in areas of the ores, minerals, fuels, water and building stones that have great societal impact on the
economy of the country. In support of our research and teaching mission, we maintain collection and
display of minerals, rocks, fossils, maps and models in our museum, could be used in studies and
research. For postgraduate works we have latest analytical and computing facilities.
Mission Statement of the B.Sc. (Hons.) Program:
The mission of the B.Sc. (Hons.) Program is to enable students to communicate and understand the
terms / technologies, concepts, fundamentals of the subject, to give training in basic geological field
work and prepare them for advance courses in M.Sc.
Objectives of the Program:
1. Social development of the students
2. To develop communication (oral, written and computer) skills
3. Students should know about the basic concept of the subject and their application.
4. Prepare students for Geological field work.
5. Prepare students for identification and analyzing geo-materials (minerals, ores, rocks,
fossils etc.)

Standard 1-2: The program must have documented outcomes for graduating students. It must be
demonstrated that the outcomes support the program objectives and that graduating students are
capable of performing these outcomes.
The outcome of the program
Students are expected to:
1. Possess a sound understanding of fundamental concepts.
2. Communicate or share basic knowledge among them and gives presentations on related
topics.
3. Identify samples of rocks, minerals, ores and fossils in lab as well as in field.
4. Do field work within available resources/circumstances.

Standard 1-3: The results of program’s assessment and the extent to which they are used to improve the

a) Actions Taken
For counseling of student and to maintain discipline, student advisors are appointed
Maintain and update multimedia and enhanced computer based instruction tools.
Newly inducted lecturers are attached with experienced teachers to improve teaching skills.
New books and journals in seminar and reference libraries are being increased every year.
Oral and poster presentations are taken by the students of department.
b) Strengths and Weaknesses of the Program
i) Strengths:
Department has seven Ph.D. teachers while remaining are pursuing for the same.
Establishment of new building with well-equipped class rooms and labs.
Internships for students in various geological organizations.
ii) Weaknesses
There is no field vehicle to carry out geological field work for students, teachers and research
scholars.
Lack of software available in industry to solve geological problems
Insufficient and delayed funds constraining smooth running of labs, maintenance and
updating of instruments, fields and departmental matters.
c) Future Development Plans
Improvement and integration of field, analytical and research facilities.
To acquire licensed geological software for the students and research scholars of the
department.

Criterion-4 Student Support and Advising
The Department of Geology has satisfactory support for students to complete the program according to
schedule and the students have ample opportunity to interact with their teachers of respective courses to
receive timely advice about program requirements and career development.
Standard 4-1: Courses must have been offered with sufficient frequency and number for students to
complete the program in a timely manner.

Course allocation is made in the staff meeting for each semester chaired by head of department before the
commencement of semester. Courses synopsis are distributed among students for the better understanding of
course during introductory classes of the courses.
Standard 4-3: Guidance on how to complete the program must be available to all students and
access to academic advising must be available to make course decisions and career choices.
The Chairman of the Department nominates two faculty members (one male and one female) as „Students
Advisors‟ who are available to all students for extra- and co-curricular activities, subject selection and career
counseling. The Student Advisors and the Chairman help the students by providing information regarding
career opportunities available for them.
The opportunities of job, membership in technical and professional societies are placed on the Notice Board
by the Chairman of Department.

Standard 5-1: The process by which students are admitted to the program must be based on
quantitative and qualitative criteria and clearly documented. This process must be periodically
evaluated to ensure that it is meeting its objectives.

Standard 5-2: The process by which students are registered in the program and monitoring of students
progress to ensure timely completion of the program must be documented. This process must be
periodically evaluated to ensure that it is meeting its objectives.
Courses are completed timely. Monitoring procedures for students are documented regularly. Regular
Teaching staff meetings are held in the department. Additional classes are adjusted, immediately after any
unscheduled closure.
Standard 5-3: The process of recruiting and retaining highly qualified faculty members must be
in place and clearly documented. Also processes and procedures for faculty evaluation, promotion
must be consistent with institutional mission statement. These processes must be periodically
evaluated to ensure that it is meeting with its objectives.

Standard 5-4: The process and procedure used to ensure that teaching and delivery of course
material to the students emphasizes active learning and that course learning outcomes are met. The
process must be periodically evaluated to ensure that it is meeting its objectives.
The methodology to ensure teaching and delivery of course material is as follows:

b. Chairman of the Department regularly gets feedback from the students during the semester.

Standard 5-5: The process that ensures that graduates have completed the requirements of the
program must be based on standards, effective and clearly documented procedures. This process
must be periodically evaluated to ensure that it is meeting its objectives.
a) The department ensures that the students are punctual and fulfill the attendance requirement i.e. 75%.
b) Promotions to the next year are restricted to only those who have cleared more than 80% courses.
c) Exams by the students are regularly held.

Criterion-6 Faculty
Standard 6-1: There must be enough full time faculty who are committed to the program to
provide adequate coverage of the program areas / courses with continuity and stability. The
interest of all faculty members must be sufficient to teach all courses, plan, modify and update
courses. The majority must hold a Ph.D. degree in the discipline.
The Department of Geology is currently having the services of 14 regular faculty members, 2 Adjunct
Professors. Most of the faculty members are Ph.D.
Standard 6-2: All faculty members must remain current in the discipline and sufficient time must be
provided for scholarly activities and professional development. Also, effective programs for faculty
development must be in place.
Faculty members of Department of Geology are considered current in the discipline based on the following
criteria:
i) All teachers meet the HEC criteria for appointment in the respective cadre.
ii) Teachers generally participate in seminars, conferences at National / International levels.
iii) Teachers take interest in teaching and involve themselves in research and consultancy.
iv) Teachers are generally available in department or are in library.
v) Those who are engaged in improving qualification are provided relaxation in their teaching load.
Standard 6-3: All faculty members should be motivated and have job satisfaction to excel in their
profession.
To help the faculty of Department of Geology in their progress to excel in their profession, department make
efforts to implement following strategies:
i) The department ensures fair, timely selection, appointment/promotion as per HEC criteria.
ii) Congenial working environment exists for teaching, research and innovative technology program.

INSTITUTIONAL FACILITIES

Criterion-7 Institutional Facilities
The department of geology is well equipped for pursuing its goal having skilled and proficient faculty, well
equipped laboratories and other infrastructure. The seminar library, class rooms and laboratories are
inadequate for students. There is a need of funds to improve/maintain all available facilities and field works.
Standard 7-1: The Institution must have the infrastructure to support new trends in learning such as
E-learning.
a) Departmental library and Internet Facility
Departmental Seminar library has stock of about 5000 books and research journals on various field of
Geology. Effort is made to acquire latest books. Subscription to international level Geological journals is
required. The Department of Geology has internet facility in computer lab, offices and teacher‟s rooms. The
availability of the latest editions, new books and research journals and facility of internet needs to be
improved.
b) Main Library
Faculty members and students of the department are allowed to use the main Library which has extended
working hours. The main library provides the following services;

iii. Digital library having access to journals and E-books
c) Offices
The department of Geology has adequate offices for fifteen faculty members engaged in teaching and
research.
d) Class Rooms
The department of Geology has auditorium, six lecture rooms and projection room which are sufficient for the
students.
Standard 7-2: The library must possess on up-to-date technical collection relevant to the
program and must be adequately staffed with professional personnel.
Department of Geology have up-to-date seminar library along with a reference library and periodical section and
professional personnel to maintain these libraries.
Standard 7-3: Class rooms must be adequately equipped and offices must be adequate to enable
faculty to carry out their responsibility.

The institution‟s support for the program is sufficient enough to provide an environment in which the program
can achieve its objectives and retain its strength. However, financial resources are required to meet the
program‟s objectives.
Standard 8-1: There must be sufficient support and financial resources to attract and retain high
quality faculty and provide the means for them to maintain competence as teacher and scholars.
HEC rules may be made more attractive for highly qualified professional teachers.

Standard 8-3: Financial resources must be provided to acquire and maintain library holding,
laboratories and computing facilities.
The University of Karachi provides financial resources to maintain field, library, laboratories and computing
facilities. The department, however, is not having the separate fund of its own to maintain and upgrade its
library and computing facilities. HEC is also requested to provide additional financial resources for further
strengthening of the Department of Geology.
