On Friday, January 20th, 85 staff, students and family members attended a fun family night! The PTG

and volunteers sold pizza, hotdogs, chips, water and soda for dinner

items. Attendees also enjoyed popcorn while watching the “Finding

Dory” movie. Attendees sat on blankets on the floor or at the tables.

Everyone had a wonderful time! We hope to see you at our next

family event! Mark your calendars, “Cat in the Hat Bingo for

Beads and Books” on Thursday, March 2nd!!

Sell the Great American Fundraiser We started selling this fundraiser end of January to

raise money for field trips and all the extras for our

students and school. All orders and money are due in by February 10th.

This fundraiser includes delicious food items, cookbooks, kitchen gadgets,

magazines, seeds & bulbs, wrapping paper, chocolates, popcorn, jewelry, and

many more exclusive items are available online on their site.

Principal Notes: Dear Families & Students,

It is hard to believe that we are half-way

through the academic year! Even though Feb-

ruary is the shortest month of the year, it’s

filled with all sorts of holidays and observanc-

es - Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day, and

more. And of course February is American Heart Month.

What a great time to make small changes that can lead to a

lifetime of heart health. Colegrove Park Elementary School,

in partnership with the American Heart Association, hope to

raise awareness about heart health through our physical edu-

cation classes and jumping rope while empowering students

to improve their health this month. Information about this

campaign will be sent home shortly.

On February 15th we will host two events for our students as

part of our SPIRIT week. In the morning, the Drury Stage

Company will perform at an assembly for students in grades

K-5. In the afternoon, we will host an event for our 6-7 stu-

dents. Recognition, awards and some fun jump roping activ-

ities will be part of the day. Stay healthy and warm!

It’s Flu Time!!

If your child is sent home from school with a sore throat, cough, and high fever it could

be the flu or just a common cold. Although the flu usually causes symptoms that make

someone feel worse than symptoms associated with a common cold, it’s not always

easy to tell the difference between the two.

While even healthy kids can have complications of the flu, kids with certain medical

conditions are at more of a risk. If you think your child might have the flu, contact your

doctor. We encourage you to get a flu shot every year from your pediatrician’s office.

Our Goal is for Colegrove Park Elementary Families, Teachers and Staff

to work together as a community to enrich our students’ educational lives

at Colegrove Park Elementary School.

January 9th PTG Meeting Minutes

7 Attended (4 Staff, 3 Parents). November minutes were reviewed. No meeting held in December. Next meeting will be Monday, February 6, 2017.

Thank you Crystal for your hard work at the book fair. The Spring BOGO Book Fair is tentatively scheduled for May 1st -5th. Must examine MCAS test schedule to ensure no conflicts. New fundraiser “Great American” to start upon arrival. Plans were made for the January 20th Movie Night - “Finding Dory.” Looking to plan 6-7 grade TBD March 24th - “Dance into Spring.” $5.00 each. Possibly a Colegrove Park Elementary only 5th ,6th, 7th dance in April or May.

Spirit Week planned: Friendship/School Spirit Decoration Contest, 1 winner for each floor (pizza or ice cream party.) Read Across America Week Activities planned: culminating event “Mardi Gras” “Bingo for Beads and Books” Family Night 6pm to 7:30. Potential of Rock & Read Fundraiser to help pay for 7th grade end of the year field trip. Asking for faculty trip ideas.

Spring Events to Plan: Numberland Family Night, Spring Concert TBD with Mrs. Lazarri/ Ms. Fillo, Ice Cream Social May 22nd and Field Day.

We are collecting General Mills Box Tops. Please clip, save, and send your General Mills Box

Tops. We earn 10¢ per box top. Also send in your Can Tabs to help the Shriners help the sick

children at the Shriners Hospital.

WooHoo! We received our first check for our box tops this year!! It was $583.60!!

Also we have approximately 65 lbs. of can tabs for the Shriners!!

Thanks so much for helping our school. Our staff and

students greatly appreciate the extras we are able to

purchase and the events we can have for our students and

our families at our school using the money we raise.

First Graders Learn About Martin Luther King The first graders in Mrs. Farnham’s class spent a week learn-

ing about Martin Luther King as part of our social studies

curriculum. We read several books about MLK and talked

about his speech “I Have a Dream”. Throughout the week,

the children learned about discrimination, segregation, jus-

tice, and equality. They also learned that MLK day is always

celebrated on the third Monday in January; and it is a cele-

bration of his life’s work. As part of the lesson, children got

to express what their

dreams are for the

classroom. As a culmi-

nating lesson, the chil-

dren created a por-

trait of MLK and did a

writing about MLK’s

dream and their dream.

Tooling Foil Texture Images:

Grade 6 Ms. Jock began this lesson by discussing textures.

As artists, we can imply textures by drawing different

lines and patterns creating what appears to have texture.

We discussed the difference between “real and implied

texture”. Ms. Jock showed many samples of lines they

could draw to make it look like a texture. They could

copy images or create their own inside a rectangle

shape on a sheet of paper. After they made many texture images to fill their rectangle, they were given a

sheet of tooling foil and told to trace the images onto the tooling foil to create real texture. When they

finished tracing all their lines, they took colorful Sharpies to outline the impressions on the tooling foil.

When they finished outlining everything they copied their original image onto a piece of scratch art paper

and saw that the image returned to its original state of “implied texture”.

One-Point Perspective - My Own City

by our 5th graders Fifth grade has been studying units on perspective and the use of rulers in vertical and horizontal positions. Ms. Jock

demonstrated how to draw buildings using a vanishing point and making it look three-dimensional. The students

began to create their own cities by drawing buildings and adding details with pencils and rulers. After cities were

completely drawn, they finished with thin tip markers and color pencils.

Breakfast In

Elementary “breakfast in the class-

room” is in full swing! We began with

a pilot in 7th grade after our teachers

visited Brayton Elementary to see their

successful program. Other teachers

soon joined in and we now have our

entire student body participating. Ms.

Nelson, in 7th grade, reports that her

students absolutely love the program!

Her class puts their desks in a big cir-

cle and she sits to eat with her students.

They discuss their evenings and hopes

for the days and everyone leaves the

room smiling. What a phenomenal start

to our days!

Ms. Nelson's class has been enjoying breakfast in

the classroom. With desks in a circle, and all in

attendance, the morning discussions are a bright

start to every

morning. The re-

cent addition of

"restorative prac-

tices circles" has

been a great way

for everyone to

take a reflective

look at their lives

and to allow every student to have a voice. Morn-

ing discussions can vary from day to day but on

this day we discussed flexibility, both figuratively

and literally. Students from our class show off their

flexibility. Silliness and giggles are always a good

way to start a day!

We had a surprise visit from Officer Dixon, Ava Dixon's father, who made her birthday very

special. He spoke to our class about what his job entails, about 911 and about making good

choices in life. The students have been learning about the tools, uniforms, and tasks of a variety

of community helpers, such as police officers, chefs, garbage collectors, veterinarians, postal

carriers, and doctors. Officer Dixon showed our students how to be comfortable with people in

our community. Police Officers are our friends and here to help us. We appreciated that he was

able to take time

out of his busy

schedule to visit.

he brought us.

District Wide Bands Play at Drury On Friday, March 3, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. band students in grades 5, 6 & 7 from

Brayton, Greylock and Colegrove Park Elementary Schools will present a

concert at Drury High School. The 6th & 7th grade students will be joined on

one piece by several 6th & 7th grade teachers from all three schools who will

join our percussion section. The concert will also feature the Drury High

School Concert Band. Please come, admission is free to the public.

As part of the Teach to Learn Science program, the students in Mrs. Farnham’s first grade

class learned about sound and how it travels. Students also learned that vibrating materials

can make sound. One of the experiments the children did was to create an instrument and

send a message. The children made a “walkie-talkie/telephone” system to send messages us-

ing sound. As you can seed, the children had fun taking turns trying out their “telephones”.

Mrs. Farnham’s First Graders Create Communication Devices!

As a culminating lesson for the Teach to Learn Light and Sound Science Unit, children in

Mrs. Farnham’s class had the opportunity to use their creativity to create their own

communication device using light and/or sound. First the children had to use their

engineering skills to create a prototype of their device on paper. Then the children got

to choose from a variety of materials to create their device. Once the device was com-

pleted, the children then created a final prototype of their device on paper. Each child

then had the opportunity to demonstrate how his/her device worked. They were

encouraged to use the vocabulary they had learned throughout the lesson in their

presentations. This lesson was quite a hit with the children!
