810 and 520 Upgrades to 520 vs. 525

810 Upgrades are lower priced to 525 than 520 (especially if you don’t need unlimited users)

– Small 810s may “fit into” a 515 – MUCH lower cost than an upgrade

520 1.65 Ghz (Power5) to 525 significantly less expensive than to 520 1.9 Ghz

– For 150 users or less

520 1.9 Ghz (Power5+) to 525 “almost a no-brainer” – be sure to propose at least 150 users

Using a 525 CBU as a reason to Upgrade the “Primary” 810 CANNOT be the Primary to a 525 CBU

– If you want a 525 CBU, you’ll need to upgrade the 810 first

– Upgrades from 810 and 520 non-CBU to 525 CBU do NOT exist

520 as primary to 525 CBU will require additional user entitlements on the 525 CBU

– CBU user entitlements purchased at time of initial 525 CBU order or upgrade are lower priced

– 525 has user entitlements that can temporarily transfer to the 525 CBU

Consider upgrading the 520 to a 525 (instead of buying lots of entitlements for a 525 CBU)

NOW get a $2,000 rebate (US $) when you

buy a CBU edition after purchasing or

upgrading the primary to a 525

(by June 30, 2007)

520/550 memory

DDR2 Required for POWER5+ model 520

DDR1 Required for POWER5 model 520

– DDR2 memory faster MHz

– Can NOT mix earlier DDR1 memory with new DDR2 memory

– DDR2 memory benefits vs DDR1

• Modest Contribution to higher performance ratings

• More 520/550 memory feature granularity

• Can save memory slots due to fewer DIMMs per feature

Smarter IOAs (IOP-less) Direction

IOA technology has evolved to the point where an IOA can take over the IOP as well as the IOA functionality.

Smart IOA benefits include– Avoiding cost of IOP and PCI slot to hold IOP

– Configuration flexibility including simpler LPAR I/O POWER5 or later system prerequisite

Embedded 520/550/570 I/O controller No feature code designates this controller. One is embedded in each

520/550/570 CEC/processor enclosure. It drives the tape drive, DVD drive and disk drives* in the CEC/processor enclosure.

(It is for this controller that the 5709/5726/5727/5728 RAID Enabler card augments the controller with write cache, increasing disk performance)

1.5 GHz/1.65 GHz system embedded controller requires an IOP in the CEC/processor enclosure to enable this controller.

1.9 GHz/2.2 GHz system embedded controller is IOP-less capable.

– If an IOP is present in the CEC, the embedded controller runs in IOP-based mode.

– If an IOP is not present then

• If a 1.9 GHz 520 running V5R3 , then can run IOP-less• If a 1.9/2.2 GHz 520/550/570 running V5R4, then can run IOP-less

* The 520/550 CEC can split the 8 disk slots into two groups of 4 disk slots and drive the second set of disk with a different disk controller. The six disk slots of the 570 are always driven by just the embedded controller.

Write cache for integrated CEC disk controller

Either with IOP or IOP-less

#5727/#5728

– 40MB write cache (enhances disk performance)

– RAID-5 enablement (minimum of 3 disk)

– Recommended for 520/550/570 with mirroring (for performance)

– No PCI-X slots required (uses special CEC internal slot)

– Augments imbedded CEC controller for disk in CEC – no impact to DVD or tape performance

– Essentially the same as #5709/5726 in 1.5/1.65GHz systems

#5727 Integrated Cache – 40 MBFor model 520/550Use instead of #5709 – same

performance if same 40 MB size#9510 is no-charge feature for

Express Configurations with RAID

#5728 Integrated Cache – 40 MBFor model 570Use instead of #5709/#5726 – same

performance if same 40 MB sizeRequired if using more than three

disk drives in processor enclosure

If the customer has over 3-4 disk drives or if disk drives are busy, this can really help performance

Auxiliary Write Cache IOA

Auxiliary write cache must be equal or larger in size than disk controller’s write cache

Provides a redundant write cache for additional reliability– In case the large cache disk controller fails and its cache is damaged– When controller is replaced, cache contents recovered from auxiliary write cache– NOTE … does not protect against failing controller ability to take the system

down, but does protect against extended outage if controller’s cache fails No disk system performance impact anticipated by IOA Not a disk controller itself, its only function is write cache backup

IBM TotalStorage 3494 Virtual Tape Server The IBM TotalStorage Virtual Tape Server™ (VTS) is an enterprise tape solution

designed to enhance performance and provide the capacity required for today ’s backup requirements. The adoption of this solution can help reduce batch processing time, total cost of ownership and management cost. A VTS Peer-to-Peer (PtP) configuration can provide redundancy for greater disaster tolerance and help fulfill business continuity requirements.

Highlights: – Reduce operating costs, such as power, maintenance, and operations and

support staff – Improve operational quality – Improve tape data availability – Provide fast access to data – Provide remote dual copy for use with Geographically Dispersed Parallel

Sysplex (GDPS), disaster backup and recovery and remote tape vault – Reduce floor space consumed by tape operations – Increase the level of tape automation – Reduce the backup window – Share data between diverse servers
