ATV Buyers …Who Are They and What Do They Want?
Recently, Kawasaki completed a comprehensive study of the ATV market and thepeople who buy ATVs. The study identified five distinct groups of ATV owners based onan extensive list of psychographic and demographic questions contained in aneight-page survey sent to over 18,000 ATV owners.
This study is helping us target our product development and marketing efforts moreeffectively. We hope you find the study helpful in targeting new buyers.
Note that the models listed with the groups are the models most often purchased bythe group. Due to the range of models in the Kawasaki line, often two or three otherKawasaki ATV models can fulfill the buyer's needs.
Casual RecreationistsFun, fun, fun describes this group's motivation for riding ATVs. These are the "toybuyers" among the five groups, and their interests revolve around family fun, relaxation, and social interaction. This group, which comprises about a fifth of the market, containsa high percentage of first-time buyers, and they tend to be less-experienced riders. Thisgroup also enjoys the highest household income of the five groups, has the highestpercentage of white-collar occupations, and holds the highest share of female riders. They are not as interested in things like suspension, engine size, ground clearance, etc. as the other groups.
Suggested Kawasaki ATVs:
BAYOU® 220PRAIRIE® 300LAKOTA™ SPORT
OutdoorsmenThis group of ATV owners comprises about a quarter of the ATV market. Their favoriteactivities are hunting, fishing and exploring. They are generally self-motivated andactive participants, not passive observers, and they tend to be "planners" by nature. They buy ATVs primarily as a means to help them enjoy some other activity (likehunting), or to get them to their favorite fishing spot. These folks are about in themiddle of the income range, and about three-quarters of them are married. They arefeature oriented, but not technology oriented. For example, they like big, sturdy racks, but don't care whether they are steel or composite.
Suggested Kawasaki ATVs:

2
Agri-HuntersThis group is the most likely to buy an ATV for work purposes. They are second only tothe Outdoorsmen in their interest in hunting, but are not involved in a wide range ofrecreational activities. This is the most mature and oldest segment among the fivegroups. Almost all are married and they have the second highest household income. Many Agri-Hunters own their own farms, are very self-reliant, and are likely to do a lot ofinformation gathering prior to making their purchase. Compared to the other groups, these owners place the highest importance on manufacturer's reputation andworkmanship. Durability plays a crucial role in their buying habits.

High PerformersAs you might expect, this group is comprised of the performance enthusiasts in theATV world. They make up about one-fifth of the total market and they are intotop-speed, handling and the excitement of riding. Riding is a very social activity for thisgroup, and they tend to view their ATV as an extension of their personality: competitiveand a desire to be in control when they participate. They are the youngest of the fivegroups (average 28 years) and have the lowest incomes. They are avid readers of theenthusiast magazines, like to keep up with the latest technological advances, and loveto talk about ATVs with their friends.
Suggested Kawasaki ATVs:
MOJAVE™LAKOTA™ SPORT
Passionate AdventurersPerhaps the most interesting of the five groups, these owners are deeply involved inthe total experience of ATV riding. They ride to have fun, relax and gain a sense offreedom. They are goal-oriented in their ATV riding and are the most likely to planoutings with their ATV as the focal point of their activities. They will ride anywhere, anytime they can, and share the same zeal for technology and special features as theHigh Performers. They are serious do-it-yourselfers, and would rather have too much todo than nothing at all. Most are in their early 40's, are not as affluent as other ATVowners, have blue-collar type jobs, and three-quarters of them are married.

ALL TERRAIN VEHICLES KAW-PEDIA
The Kaw-Pedia is an alphabetical guide to the benefits of the many technical features of the 2001 Kawasakiproducts shown in this book. The Kaw-Pedia has three sections: Engine/Drive Train, Chassis, and Electrical.
Engine/Drive Train:
AUTOMATIC CAM CHAIN TENSIONERFeatures:The crankshaft turns the camshaft(s) with a chain.Cam chains gradually wear and stretch whichchanges the cam timing. The automatic cam chaintensioner compensates for the increased chainlength so there is no slack. To do this a springpushes the tensioner plunger out against the chain, keeping the tension correct. A pawl and ratchetprevent the tensioner plunger from being pushed inwhen chain loads are high.Benefits:The cam chain is kept tensioned without anymaintenance work or expense. The chain operatesquietly for increased riding comfort.
BALANCER SYSTEMFeatures:The engine balancer system consists of one or tworotating balancer weights, driven by a chain or gearsoff the crankshaft. Theweights work with thecrankshaft counter-weight to cancel verticalvibration caused by thepiston. The weights workagainst the crankshaftcounter- weight to cancelhor izontal v ibrat ioncaused by the crankshaftcounterweight.Benefits:Reduced vibration offers less rider fatigue and bettervisibility in the rear view mirrors. It also contributes tolonger life of light bulbs and other components.
CAM CHAINS (ROLLER & SILENT)Features:On Kawasaki ATVs the crankshaft turns theoverhead camshaft(s) with either roller or silentchains. Roller cam chains are used on sportiervehicles where more chain noise is tolerated. Theroller chain consumes slightly less power than silentchain leaving more power available to drive the rearwheels.Benefits:A roller chain uses less horsepower to keep theengine running for improved performance. The silentchain provides a quieter ride with less noise intrudingon the riding experience.
CARBURETORFeatures:Carburetors mix air and fuel so the engine can burnit. The carburetors also control or throttle the amountof air and fuel which reaches the engine changing itsspeed. The carburetor also changes the air/fuel ratiofor different operating conditions such as starting orabrupt slowing from speed. Some carburetors have an air valve called a slideconnected to a fuel valve called a needle and needlejet. As the slide is raised, letting more air flow to theengine, the needle also rises letting more fuel flowout the needle jet to mix with the air. The shape of theslide and size of the needle and needle jet control theair/fuel ratio at low through high engine speeds. Atidle and slow RPMs when little air flows past theneedle and needle jet fuel does not mix efficiently. Asmaller jet and several passages, together called thepilot circuit, control the fuel at these speeds.Benefits:Mixing fuel under the adverse conditions of vibrationand movement that an ATV is subjected to requires aspecial fuel and air control instrument, thecarburetor.
CONSTANT VELOCITY (CV) CARBURETORFeatures:In conventional slide-type carburetors (seeCARBURETOR) the slide controls air flow to theengine. In CV carburetors a butterfly valve controlsair flow to the engine. The sl ide in a CVcarburetor is controlledby a diaphragm in achamber on top of thecarburetor. As enginespeed increases theslide raises to enlargethe venturi opening tomaintain an almostconstant air speedacross the needle jet.
Benefits:Constant velocity through the carburetor permitsaccurate control of air and fuel during sudden throttlemovement for smooth and immediate low speedengine response.

DUAL AUTOMATIC CLUTCHESFeatures:Most Kawasaki ATVs have two automatic clutches. The primary clutch, mounted on the crankshaft, engages as RPMsincrease above idlemoving the machineforward when in gear. The primary clutchdisengages as the engineRPM slows back to idle. Ifthe ATV is going down hilland the throttle is closed a one-way bearingmaintains the primary clutch’s connection to thecrankshaft producing engine braking. The secondary clutch completes the flow of power tothe transmission and is connected to the shiftmechanism. As the shift pedal is moved, the clutchdisengages just before the transmission shifts. Aspressure on the shift pedal is released the clutchre-engages.Benefits:Being automatic, the rider never has to think about allthe clutch action taking place, making it very easy tooperate.
DUAL-OVERHEAD CAMSFeatures:The cams are placed above the head instead of in thecrankcase. One cam opens the exhaust valves andthe second cam opens the intake valves. Placing thecams in the head simplifies and lightens the valvetrain. It also allows optimum placement of the valvesfor more efficient combustion.Benefits:Dual-overhead cams are light and compact for lessvalve train reciprocating mass and less valve trainflex at high RPMs. Dual-overhead camshaft headsremain the standard for efficient power and torqueproduction.
DUAL-RANGE SUB-TRANSMISSIONFeatures:A two-speed transmission is added to the output ofthe belt-type torque converter, greatly extending itsoperating speed range.Benefits:The extended speed range allowed by thesub-transmission gives the vehicle tremendouspulling and hauling flexibility without sacrificingsporty performance.
KAWASAKI AUTOMATIC POWER-DRIVE SYSTEM(KAPS)
Features:The KAPS is a belt-type torqueconverter continuously variabletransmission. It is totally automaticfrom idle to top speed.Benefits:Ease of operation is important toriders of all levels. Kawasaki has along history of bel t powertransmission systems.
KAWASAKI AUTOMATIC COMPRESSIONRELEASE (KACR)
Features:The KACR automatically holds the exhaust valve(s)open a little at starting speeds. This releases some ofthe compression during starting. Once the enginebegins to run the valves operate normally.Benefits:The KACR makes the engine easier to start. Iteliminates the need for a manual compressionrelease.
LIQUID COOLINGFeatures:A pump circulates coolant through a water jacketsurrounding the cylinder and combustion chamber, soaking up engine heat. The coolant continues on tothe radiator. Air flowing by the radiator tubes carriesthe engine heat away. Consistent enginetemperatures result, allowing increased durabilityand reduced mechanical noise.Benefits:Liquid-cooled engines can sustain morehorsepower during hard use. Liquid-cooled engineshave longer engine l i fe due to constanttemperatures. Liquid-cooled engines are quieterthan air-cooled engines.
OPEN-DECK CYLINDERFeatures:As the name implies thedeck at the top of thecylinder is open. The ribsthat support the cylinderliner have been moveddown leaving the waterjacket to completelysurround the cylinder top. With the hottest part of thecylinder immersed in coolant, heat is removed fromthe cylinder more efficiently. This allows the

FOUR-VALVE HEADSFeatures:Putting the most air andfuel into the cylinderpossible produces thebest power and torque. One way to do this is toopen many large valvesletting the air and fuel fillthe cylinder. This is what
3
Kawasaki did with the ZX900 back in 1984.Improvements in metallurgy have allowed the use ofvery large valve openings with very small (5.5mmdia.) and light weight valve stems.Benefits:Air and fuel enter the combustion chamber with lessrestriction improving torque and power.
compression ratio to be raised without risk ofdetonation.Benefits:Removing more heat and raising the compressionratio increases power and torque, and reduces fuelconsumption.
SNORKEL AIR INTAKEFeatures:Used on off-road vehicles, the snorkel opening isplaced high and forward. Air going to the engine isdrawn from the cleanest, driest and coolest place onthe vehicle.Benefits:Performance in hot, wet or dusty conditions remainsstrong. The air filter requires less frequent service forreduced maintenance costs and less down time.
Chassis:
ACKERMAN STEERINGFeatures:Ackerman steering designplaces the steering arm oneach front hub along a linedrawn from the center ofthe rear axle to the pivotpoint of each front wheel. When the handlebar is turned the wheel on the insideof the turn is pulled to a tighter steering angle thanthe outside wheel. This allows the wheels to followthe inside and outside arc of the turn withoutscrubbing the tires.Benefits:Steering forces are lighter and tire wear is reducedmaking the vehicle easier to ride or drive andoperating costs are lowered.
CRADLE FRAMEFeatures:The cradle framehas one or twof rame memberscalled down tubesthat begin at thefront suspensionattachment points, extend under theengine and re-attach to the frame near the rearsuspension attachment points.Benefits:Extra protection of vital engine parts and addedstrength are the advantages of a cradle frame.
DOUBLE WISHBONE SUSPENSIONFeatures:Double wishbone frontsuspensions have longerwheel travel with lesscamber change. As thewheel is pushed up whenit rolls over a bump, thelower wishbone pivots upand at the same time theupper wishbone movesup and pushes the hub carrier out. This keeps thefront axle parallel to the ground, letting the tiremaintain traction for steering and controlling chassisroll.Benefits:Similar to suspensions on sports cars, the doublewishbone suspension keeps the tires and chassis inthe right place at the right time for good corneringand steering control.
DUAL-MODE DIFFERENTIALFeatures:Dual-mode differentials in the unlocked mode allowthe drive wheels to revolve at different speeds. Thisallows the vehicle to round corners without wheelslippage just like a car. Locking dogs are machinedinto the outside of the differential gear. Shifting acoupling into engagement with the locking dogscauses the differential to lock and work like a solidaxle. In the locked mode the left and right drivewheels now turn at the same speed increasingtraction.Benefits:The locking differential lets the operator choose themode of operation: unlocked so the soil or grass isnot disturbed preserving the environment or lockedfor increased traction for rough terrain or pulling atrailer.
FULL-TIME FOUR-WHEEL DRIVEFeatures:Kawasaki full-time four-wheel drive ATVs use frontand rear driveshafts to deliver power to the wheelsfrom the transmission. A bevel gear drive turns thesolid rear axle. A limited slip differential turns the frontaxles. Ful l - t ime four wheel-dr ive has fewmaintenance items and is easy to operate. (seeLIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL)Benefits:Kawasaki 4X4s deliver all wheel drive when you needit, no wasted time fiddling with extra levers and gearchanges. Full-time four-wheel drive also costs less tomaintain.
32
LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIALFeatures:In slippery mud or snow an ordinary differential givesall the drive torque to the wheel without traction whilethe wheel with grip gets none. The limited slipdifferential prevents this with a clutch on each axlethat slips at a preset torque. The clutch connects theside gears to the differential case, causing the caseand axles to act like a solid axle. This provides a fixedamount of torque to each wheel before the clutchesslip. The wheel with traction will always receive sometorque.Benefits:The limited slip differential works automatically topull you through when extra traction is needed. Thistype of front drive also produces light steering foreasy operation.
MACPHERSON STRUTFeatures:A MacPherson strut used with a single wishbone is acompact independent front suspension. The strutcarries the brake backing plate and wheel spindle inaddition to containing the spring and damper. Theend of the strut pivots in a ball joint at the point of thewishbone. The wishbone keeps the spindle end ofthe strut from moving front to back and the strutpermits steering movement.Benefits:MacPherson struts: a durable, compact suspensionthat can absorb pounding potholes and still deliver acomfortable ride, easy steering, and good stabilityeven under a load.
QUAD-LINK REAR SUSPENSIONFeatures:The quad-link suspensionhas two trai l ing armsattached to the axle and twolink arms that keep thetrailing arms perpendicularto the axle. All four links areconnected with rubberbushings to allow the rightand left wheels to move over bumps nearlyindependently of each other. Coil springs with shockabsorbers support the vehicle.Benefits:ATV suspensions of other manufacturers havetraditionally been adaptations of motorcycledesigns. The quad-link rear suspension onKawasaki KLF models is borrowed from automotivetechnology and that’s why it works so well on ourfour-wheelers. The semi-independent suspensionsystem complies with the terrain providing comfortand good handling while still being sturdy and light.
SPRING PRELOAD ADJUSTMENTFeatures:Spring preload adjustment compensates forchanging loads. Spring preload compresses thespring initially so when a load is applied it takes moreweight to compress the spring further. The springpreload adjuster is a threaded collar or cam on oneend of the shock(s) which rotates to compress thespring.Benefits:Adjustable springs offer more flexibility in fine tuningthe suspension to the rider’s needs.
THROTTLE LIMITERFeatures:A handlebar mounted adjuster can be used to limitthrottle lever travel.Benefits:This feature gives new users a chance to share in thegood times at reduced speed and power levels.
Electrical:
CAPACITOR DISCHARGE IGNITION (CDI)Features:CDI is a self-powered ignition which relies on thequick discharge of a capacitor to fire the spark plug.An exciter coil and the magnets in the engine’srotating flywheel generate a voltage charging thecapacitor in the CDI unit. A pulse coil senses theposition of the flywheel and times the discharge ofthe capacitor. At the correct moment the capacitorvoltage is discharged through the ignition coil firingthe spark plug.Benefits:CDI helps the engine start easily and ensures firingunder adverse conditions. CDI requires no batteryso the ignition weighs less and requires nomaintenance. Spark plugs last longer too.
3
DIRECT-CURRENT CDI (DC-CDI)Features:DC-CDI is a capacitor discharge ignition system thatis powered by the battery. Direct current from thebattery, after being stepped-up to several hundredvolts, charges a capacitor. The pulser coil sends asignal at just the right time to discharge the capacitorthrough the primary winding of the ignition coil, firingthe spark plug. A large alternator charges thebattery.
SINGLE A-ARM INDEPENDENT FRONT SUSPENSIONFeatures:The single A-Arm locates the front wheel side-to-sideand front-to-rear. A coil spring shock absorbercarries the weight of the vehicle. The resulting
3
suspension system looks something like theMacPherson strut, but is simpler, lighter, and lessexpensive.Benefits:The single A-Arm front suspension is compact andlight weight for good performance. Fewer movingparts means less friction in the steering system forlow-effort handlebar movement and quick, preciseturns.
Benefits:DC-CDI helps the engine start easily and ensuresfiring even at very low engine rpm. A side benefit isbrighter headlights at low speeds.
PERMANENT MAGNET ALTERNATORFeatures:The permanent magnet alternator has severalpermanent magnets installed in the flywheel. Themagnetic field cuts across the stator coil producingAC voltage. The AC voltage is rectified to DC andregulated to 14 vol ts at the sol id stateregulator/rectifier before charging the battery.Neither the alternator nor the regulator/rectifierrequire maintenance.Benefits:This design alternator is simple with no brushes orbearings to replace, keeping maintenance costs to aminimum.
TRANSISTOR-CONTROLLED BREAKERLESSIGNITION (TCBI)
Features:TCBI replaces the contact breaker points in abattery/coil ignition with a pulse coil. This coilproduces a reliable and precisely timed signalwhich, when amplified by transistors, functions justlike the opening of the breaker points, firing the sparkplug.
Benefits:TCBI requires next to no maintenance, increasesspark plug life, fuel economy and performance withreduced exhaust emissions.
