Mr Pearcy, a former Ellesmere and Selwyn District councillor for 25 years until he resigned in 2010, gives more than 30 hours a week to the various community and non- profit organisations he volunteers for, including the local St John ambulance service and Doyleston Community Committee. However, while he was proud of the work he had done, he was hesitant to take too much of the credit. “Everything is people orientated to a greater or lesser degree of what we’ve been involved in,” he said. “Take notice, it is ‘we’ more than ‘I’ because without the support of the family, the people that worked for me and the people that brought their work to us, we just couldn’t have done it. So you have got to look at the big picture and say it is only the support of the community that allows busy people to do things that other people haven’t got the time, or haven’t got the mana to have that effect.” Such was the value he had placed on trust and honesty that for more than 30 years Mr Pearcy kept one of his petrol pumps unlocked overnight so that people could help themselves to petrol if they needed and pay him back afterwards. When at one time that trust was broken, a few straight words from Mr Pearcy to the guilty party soon sorted it out. Mr Pearcy rated his work with others ensuring the Ellesmere Community Hospital stayed open, that the school bus service between Leeston and Doyleston was retained and assisting with instillation of the RAPID number system as highlights amongst the many community initiatives he had been involved with. St John southern area committee relationship manager Brian O’Connell said Mr Pearcy was one of Ellesmere’s most dedicated St John members and was exceptionally committed to his community. “We’d like to acknowledge Jack’s work for St John and to congratulate him on this most recent acknowledgement of his community service. Years of community service honoured

Good on ya, Jack

Tom Doudney

WHEN Jack Pearcy moved from Waiau to Doyleston in 1972 to take over the local garage, store and post shop, the locals thought he wouldn’t last a year.

Now, 40 years later not only is the business still going strong but Mr Pearcy has just been honoured with the community service award at the Sensational Selwyn Awards – and he says he owes it all to the support he has received from his family and local residents.

Mr Pearcy, a former Ellesmere and Selwyn District councillor for 25 years until he resigned in 2010, gives more than 30 hours a week to the various community and non-profit organisations he volunteers for, including the local St John ambulance service and Doyleston Community Committee.

So you have got to look at the big picture and say it is only the support of the community that allows busy people to do things that other people haven’t got the time, or haven’t got the mana to have that effect.”

Such was the value he had placed on trust and honesty that for more than 30 years Mr Pearcy kept one of his petrol pumps unlocked overnight so that people could help themselves to petrol if they needed and pay him back afterwards.

When at one time that trust was broken, a few straight words from Mr Pearcy to the

guilty party soon sorted it out.Mr Pearcy rated his work with others

ensuring the Ellesmere Community Hospital stayed open, that the school bus service between Leeston and Doyleston was retained and assisting with instillation of the RAPID number system as highlights amongst the many community initiatives he had been involved with.

Ellesmere is very lucky to have someone as special as Jack working for their interests.”

Part of the landscape: Selwyn community service award winner Jack Pearcy and his business, Jack’s Service Centre, have been part of the Doyleston community since he arrived 40 years ago.

Council asks residents to be careful with herbicideAN acid herbicide used in weed killer banned from retail sales since 2008 is turning up in Selwyn compost.

Clopyralid is found in several over-the-counter herbicides that were available before 2008, including Versatill, No Lawn Weeds Clover and Prickle, Cardo, Radiate, Archer, Tango, Contest Multiple, Void, Clout, Clopyd 300, Pirate 300, Agpro and Cloralid 300.

Selwyn District Council solid waste manager Gavin Sole said people were probably still using the weed-killer preparations on their lawns, unaware of the toxic downstream effects.

Clopyralid continues to have an effect on lawns for about three months but is toxic for any compost. The council is asking gardeners not to put lawn clippings that have been sprayed with any Clopyralid preparations in their organics bins. They also need to be careful about using the lawn clippings on their own gardens.

“We’ve recently screened 1800m3 of compost

at the Pines Resource Recovery Centre and discovered higher than recommended levels of this toxic chemical, which means we will need to spend time and money to continue to treat the compost until it is safe for sale,” Mr Sole said.

“It makes it a lot more expensive per tonne to treat the incoming organics if we have contaminants such as Clopyralid in the grass clippings.”

Gardeners who are still using the pre-2008 preparations can either put their grass clippings in their general rubbish bin, spread them under trees on their own properties, or drop off the old preparations at the Pines facility, where disposal will be arranged.

More modern herbicides do not contain the toxic chemical.

Retailers in the district also needed to be aware of the banned products as these should not be available for sale to the general public, Mr Sole said.

About 500 Selwyn residents gathered for the Awards dinner and presentations. Three finalists were chosen in each of eight categories from about 60 nominations.

“This has been a fantastic event focused on the heroes of the Selwyn District - people who are so dedicated to their communities, their work, the environment and to achieving their personal goals,” Selwyn Awards committee chair Mayor Kelvin Coe said. The winners in each category were:

LANCE Corporal (LCPL) Rory Patrick Malone, aged 26, one of the two soldiers killed during an incident in the North East of Bamyan Province, Afghanistan on Saturday, had been based at Burnham Military Camp.

LCPL Malone joined the Army Reserve Force in November 2002 and transferred to the Regular Force as a Rifleman in September 2005 and was posted to 2nd/1st Battalion Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (2/1 RNZIR), based in Burnham. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in July 2011. LCPL Malone had previously deployed to Timor-Leste in 2006 and again in 2007.

The other soldier, Lance Corporal Pralli Durrer, also aged 26, joined the NZ Army in June 2004 as a Rifleman and was posted to 1st Battalion Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (1 RNZIR). In September 2009 LCPL Durrer trade changed to Crewman, Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps (RNZAC) and was posted to Queen Alexandra’s Mounted Rifles (QAMR), now based in Linton. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in September 2010. LCPL Durrer had previously deployed to Timor-Leste in 2006/7.

LCPL Malone and LCPL Durrer deployed with the NZ Provincial Reconstruction Team in Bamyan, Afghanistan in April 2012. It was their first deployment to Afghanistan.

Speaking about the soldier’s deaths, Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant General Rhys Jones said, “Everyone in the Defence Force are deeply saddened by this loss. On behalf of the entire New Zealand Defence Force, I again extend my deepest sympathies.”

Lieutenant General Jones said the NZ Defence Force was working to return the fallen soldiers to their families as quickly as possible and was receiving great support from Coalition partners in making this happen.

He said the NZ Defence Force remained committed to ensuring a smooth and measured handover of responsibility to Afghan authorities.

ROLLESTON children are helping VSA (Volunteer Service Abroad) celebrate 50 years of international volunteering and doing their bit to help people in the wider Pacific by selling hand-woven friendship bracelets for VSA Project Friendship 2012.

Project Friendship began on Monday and runs through until Sunday. Students from Clearview Primary School in Rolleston have been selling the funky, colourful bracelets for $3 to support VSA volunteers working in Melanesia, Polynesia and Timor-Leste.

This school joins Project Friendship ambassador, hip hop and soul artist Ladi6 and primary, intermediate and secondary schools throughout the country taking part in the event. They are learning how New Zealand volunteers work alongside people in the wider Pacific, supporting them to build a better future for themselves and their families.

Ladi6 has personal experience of the power of volunteering. As a teenager she spent a year living in Tanzania where her parents worked as VSA volunteers. It was during this time that she learned how to play the guitar and wrote her first song.

VSA chief executive officer Gill Greer said the money raised from Project Friendship would help volunteers working with young people on issues such as child rights, HIV and AIDS and the environment.

“Project Friendship is an opportunity for young people to think about their role in the global community and how, by working together today, they really can help build a

better tomorrow.”VSA is celebrating

its 50th anniversary this year and to help mark the milestone, Project Friendship 2012 includes the Project Friendship Challenge where entrants have to take a photograph that demonstrates friendship through sharing skills and helping each other.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing how young people choose to illustrate the concept of friendship in 2012,” Dr Greer said.

The friendship bracelets are also being sold by Girl Guides and will be available at Four Square stores in the lower North Island. VSA’s Project Friendship partner, The Body Shop, sold bracelets in its stores during June.

The bracelets are produced under fair trade conditions at the Nga Centre, an organisation that supports young people with disabilities in Vietnam.

West Melton residents call for road changesTom Doudney

WEST Melton residents say major roading changes are needed in the township, with children’s safety topping the list of concerns.

The West Melton Residents Association held a meeting with Selwyn District Council and New Zealand Transport Agency representatives at the West Melton Hall last night to discuss their concerns and proposed solutions.

Residents Association chairperson Bruce Russell said the speed of vehicles through town, the growing population and the design of existing intersections all added up to an accident waiting to happen.

“We’ve got a very dangerous situation here in regards to children,” he said.

“We don’t want a fatality before they suddenly wake up and see they should have done something about this.”

State Highway 73 bisects the town, cutting the hall and domain off from most of the community and making it necessary for people

to cross the road to get to sports events.Mr Russell said with new subdivisions under

development and the roll at West Melton School expected to climb from around 300 children to around 500 in three years’ time, the situation needed to be addressed as soon as possible.

The Residents Association had prepared six recommendations, including an underpass for pedestrians underneath the highway and the reduction of the speed on the highway through West Melton, from 80km/h to 70km/h, the same as in the smaller township of Kirwee.

Other recommendations included placing a pedestrian crossing near the Preston Downs and Gainsborough subdivisions and changes to the West Melton Rd and Weedons Rd intersection to reduce congestion.

Mr Russell said there was broad support from the township around the proposals, including from the school and local Plunket group.

MANy people encounter problems when pasting text from another person’s document into their own Word document. The formatting turns nasty, and bullets and numbering become very messy! There are a number of reasons that cause these things to happen but they can be resolved by following three basic steps.

Firstly, identify potential problems by showing the non-printing characters. You will see where the spacebar has been used to position text on the page, where line breaks have been used instead of paragraph breaks and where the Enter key has been used to put space in the text. Unfortunately, you will need to resolve these problems manually by deleting the problem spacing.

Secondly, remove all character formatting – fonts, bold, font size, etc. – that has been manually applied to the person’s text. Select all of the text and then press Ctrl+Spacebar. The text will now be formatted with the Normal style as defined in your document but it will retain any paragraph formatting applied by the other person.

Thirdly, remove all paragraph formatting –

Leeston physio treats human and equine Olympians

Working her magic: Debbie Biles massaging Donna Herring’s horse Evander Juno Miss Bello from Templeton.

LEESTON-based physiotherapist Debbie Biles is lending her expertise to help Olympic athletes of both the human and equine variety.

The human and equine sports therapist is in London to provide sports massage at the Olympic Games.

Before leaving, Ms Biles said she could not wait for her “two hectic weeks” in the Olympic Park massage centre to start.

Her next responsibility in the UK will be to provide sports therapy to fellow Cantabrian and Para-equestrian Anthea Gunner and her horse Huntingdale Incognito (Mask), who have been selected to represent New Zealand at the Paralympics, which begin in late August.

“It is such a privilege to work with Anthea and help keep her and Mask in tip-top shape for the most important occasion of their career,” she said.

“To be on hand to cope with any physical niggles will ensure they are on the world stage

in the best possible condition.”While overseas, Ms Biles will also be getting

up to date with the latest industry research and advancements with a trip to the Equine Physio centre in Germany.

Happy birthday ‘Neddy’AUGUST 1 has come and gone and all the racehorses in New Zealand are a year older.

The single day birthday has to be up there with trainers running their horses well before other people have even woken up.

On reflection, I have never really been given a logical answer for that. Some will say it is because it’s cooler then, but that is disputed by the fact that they race in the full day heat. Others have said that it is so jockeys and trainers can do other things with their day afterwards. As most people I know in the racing industry don’t have another job and concentrate solely on racing, that goes out the window as well.

Then there’s the thought that the trainers run their horses in the dark to stop “bookies” seeing what their form is like. As we don’t have “bookies” operating here, that one falls off the wall as well.

The majority say it’s tradition. Fine, it is one that I am glad I haven’t been exposed to.

Apart from this strange tradition, the racing

industry is a very u n d e r e s t i m a t e d industry. While there’s a lot of hype at the yearling sales, the majority of the focus is within a small group of enthusiasts.

If you walk into any sports bar with a TAB in it on any day, you’ll see live racing, which means there’s a raft of people being paid to train the horses, feed and water them, ride or drive them and train them, prepare them and get them to the track - which could be another reason training is done before the birds start chirping.

Anyway, I salute the army of people who work within the industry and I hope they and their horses all had a great day on August 1.

Many people use Microsoft Office to complete their everyday work. Often, they encounter problems that cost them time and cause unnecessary stress. If you’re largely self-taught, or the training that you have had is now a distant memory, the tips and tricks in this column will help you complete your everyday Microsoft Office documents faster and with fewer problems.

About Liz ToddLiz Todd has been helping people achieve more with their Microsoft Office software since the late 1990s through face-to-face training courses and her comprehensive range of self-paced training manuals. Liz’s extensive Microsoft Office knowledge is a result of her research into best practice techniques, her own need to complete computer work as fast and painlessly as possible and the questions asked by her clients. If you have a Microsoft Office question, email [email protected].

Pasting other people’s text into your Word document alignment, bullets, tabs, indents, etc. – that has been applied. Select the text and then press Ctrl+Q.

Now that you have raw, unformatted text you can bring it into line with your document’s formatting using styles and the Format Painter.

An alternative to the second and third steps is to use the Keep Text Only paste option. Be aware though that this will bring through any bullet symbols and/or numbers from numbering systems that the other person has applied. You will need to manually remove these from your document before applying your own bullets and numbering.

Prestigious, high end quality doors at affordable prices Sensational Selwyn award winner Matthew HutchinsROLLESTON resident Matthew Hutchins, 17, won the sports award at the recently announced Sensational Selwyn Awards for his achievements in swimming.

At last September’s Youth Commonwealth Games in the Isle of Man, Hutchins won a gold medal in the 400-metre freestyle, two silver medals in the 200 and 1500-metre freestyle and bronze in the 4x200 freestyle relay event. Selwyn View caught up with the talented Lincoln High School student after receiving his award…

How do you feel about getting the Sensational Selwyn award for sports?

I am quite proud and happy to win the Sensational Selwyn award. It’s hard to explain because it’s not something that you go out and try and win but it’s still nice to be recognised I guess, if that makes sense.

Have you always excelled at swimming or was it something that took you a while to become good at?

I have always been alright at swimming but it wasn’t until a year and a bit after starting training that I started to get quite good and started to break regional or national records, so I took to the sport quite quick but I had a bit of a beginning period.

What would you like to achieve in swimming? Do you have dreams of competing at a future Commonwealth or Olympic Games?

Yeah, that is the main goal at the moment, the 2016 Olympics, before that the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and potentially world champs and stuff in between that - so pretty much all the way to the top.

What sort of training do you put into swimming? Does it take up much of your time?

My training includes nine pool sessions a week [which are] about two hours each and then three gym sessions which are about an hour each, so I have a solid 20 hours of training a week - and funnily enough it does take up most of my time that I’m not at school. Plus, if I compete on weekends I lose time then as well.

Outside of swimming, is there anything in particular you would like to achieve after you leave school (further study or work for instance)?

Outside of swimming I haven’t really set my eyes on any particular achievements. My goals at the moment are mostly swimming and I will probably start to think about other goals more in the future.

Also outside of swimming, what are some of your other hobbies and interests?

Outside of swimming, I have a couple of hobbies/interests. I don’t play any other sports but I do enjoy watching and following sports. I especially enjoy following the NBA and the NFL, as I quite enjoy American sports. I also have typical teenage hobbies - video games, watching TV, eating.

Winning again: Matthew Hutchins, right, had his award presented by HEB Construction regional manager Adolph Marmetschke.

Step into Spring withScarlett Rose

Although the weather dictates when I can ditch the dark shades of winter my inner self is begging for Spring!

I am excited by the packages arriving full of freshness and promise for a warm spring and hot summer of fashion.

The new colours are bursting out of the boxes: poppy red, tangerine, aqua blue, turquoise, and yellow! The fabrics are just delicious!

This season has so much on offer and as usual there are some key themes:

Neon has returned in abundance!

If you are struggling to wear it top to toe, try accessorising with bags, shoes and jewellery.

Colour blocking is a definite fashion statement. Outfits with striking combinations are in!

Jackets and blazers feature bright dazzling prints. Again, if you find this trend a little bold for you, cool it down with your favourite denim or coloured capris.

Spring wouldn’t be spring without a selection of printed dresses. At Scarlett Rose you will find a selection of feminine florals, tribal patterns and pretty pastel designs. To add a formal twist to your summer “frock” incorporate a light coat or soft, sheer jacket. Experiment with the combinations but remember with print, less is more!

New styles are arriving—we look forward to sharing them with you in store.

FEEL HEALTHY AND FIT FOR THE WARMER

WEATHER!

Family fun day at maze puts smiles on facesLOCAL non-profit organisation Smile Dial held its inaugural family fun day on July 29. Smile Dial was begun earlier this year to assist families who have members in hospital. The fun day, held at Tothill’s Mazes at Templeton, included a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting and many other attractions. There was even an opportunity to get lost in the maze.

Among the families having fun at Tothill’s Mazes were...

Good day out: Shirley Wray, Arden Leeds, Graeme Wray, Trent Leeds, Leanne and Indy Leeds enjoyed the show.

Pretty birdy: Cooper Walklin found himself a feathered friend.

Birds of a feather: It’s hard to know whether wearing his Angry Birds hat made Cooper Everts more or less threatening to the real bird.

Snuggle bunny: There was no separating Grace Gregory and the bunny.

Whoa there: Jayden Rae was having none of this goat’s antics.

All smiles: Olivia Keehan had a good time at the zoo.

TempletonPet Clinic

Paws for a momentPaws for a moment at Templeton Pet Clinic and discover not only wonderful veterinary

care for your pet but an amazing range of foods, toys and treats.

Dr Karen Morris, Templeton Pet Clinic’s owner and vet, is always available for advice about your furry friend whether it is a dog, cat, rabbit or your pet lamb.Templeton Pet Clinic has been run by Karen for 15 years in the shops opposite the Shell petrol station. Along with receptionist Karen Voice and Luella Osborne, the friendly professional team know their clients and their human owners personally and pride themselves on their individual care. All three of them even holiday with animals. Karen Morris spent three weeks enjoying the colourful birdlife and native mammals in northern Queensland while Karen Voice has been on an African safari where she saw all the amazing wildlife first hand. And Luella is heading to Tonga again this month as a volunteer vet nurse.“Many clients have given donations towards Luella’s trip which has been really appreciated,” says Karen.

Templeton Pet Clinic has a range of natural products, anti-inflammatories and special food to help ease any symptoms of arthritis which can be aggravated by the cold. “If your pet is stiff when they get up in the mornings, it could be a sign of arthritis.”Equipment purchased in the last two years includes in-house blood analysers and a high speed dental machine. Free dental check ups with a sample toothpaste and dental chew are available at the clinic this month. “Dental checks are important, as cats and dogs get gum and tooth disease just like we do. Undetected gum disease can lead to pain and loss of teeth.”Templeton Pet Clinic is open from 8am until 6pm from Monday to Friday with a late night on Thursday and from 9.30am until 12pm on Saturdays. Phone them on 349 6325 to make an appointment or visit them at 729 Main South Road to pick up a treat for your pet on your way past.

Watery themes: Work featured in the Fluid exhibition.

Exhibition emphasises water and movementAUGUST brings another exciting exhibition to Selwyn Gallery – Fluid, an exhibition of paintings, furniture and sculpture with a connecting theme of water and movement. All three artists exhibiting this month have an association or love of the sea and find their work influenced by it.

Mike Glover is a Canterbury artist known for his bold, often stylised paintings of land, sky and water that depict real and imagined South Island landscapes. He enjoys the vibrancy and immediacy of soft pastels and mainly uses these in his work. His latest works reflect a life-long love of the braided rivers of Canterbury and the water that flows in them, and in some cases their sad signs of decline. Glover has exhibited widely in both group and solo exhibitions throughout Canterbury and is involved in many aspects of the arts, in tutoring and on committees. In 2012 he won the Selwyn District Council Art and Culture Award for his contribution to art in the Selwyn District.

Lee Gutterson’s whole life has revolved around the sea and he feels a true affinity for the ocean. After developing a business in Christchurch making custom-designed furniture and commissioned pieces, he matured his talent of working with wood and metal to create one-of-a-kind pieces for clients. His sculpture pieces

on display in the gallery are semi-realistic renditions in wood and steel, some with vivid colour, while his cabinets and furniture exhibit flowing curves and simple form. While his studio is based in Wellington, much of his unique work can be viewed in galleries around Christchurch.

Robyn Schroeder can always find inspiration in New Zealand’s wonderful water, sky and land. She is compelled to paint the landscape that is surrounded by sea and beaches, with rivers and lakes running through it and believes that to be a New Zealander is to be strongly connected to our sources of water. Schroeder is drawn to capture the often overlooked, small details in our surroundings by using simplicity and repetition, line and form with subtle variations in colour. Using this technique she is able to truly capture the serene atmosphere of the magnificent New Zealand landscapes she loves to paint. Schroeder has been exhibiting in galleries around New Zealand in numerous group, joint and solo shows since 1993.

Selwyn Gallery will be open daily (except Mondays) from 10am to 4pm for the duration of this exhibition which runs from August 3 to August 30. An exhibition programme is available on the gallery’s website www.selwyngallery.co.nz or from the gallery.

Schools compete in Lions club art competition

Sweet reward: Shakira Fukofuka, 13, received her prize from Rolleston and Districts Lions Club secretary Bill Pickering.

RECENTLy, the Rolleston and Districts Lions Club invited six local schools to take part in an art competition designing a new club banner to replace the one that had been in use since the club was chartered in 1978. Depicting a blue gum tree with sheep grazing beside a railway line, it had become outdated.

Since then, members have witnessed and been part of tremendous changes in the township, so they sought new ideas from today’s youngsters on how they perceive Rolleston now.

The club thanks all those who took part and helped with the competition, which brought forth some good ideas.

Burnham School pupils responded

and Rebekah Johnston and Sophie Mumm were presented with second-equal vouchers.

Rolleston School’s Shakira Fukofuka, 13, was the lucky winner receiving a $100 Warehouse voucher for her effort. The School’s Parent Teacher Association benefitted too, with a $100 cheque for their co-operation.

Presenting these prizes at Rolleston School assembly, club secretary Bill Pickering said how proud members were of Rolleston’s development as a town and they looked back with immense satisfaction on the numerous projects, groups and individuals the club has assisted with over the past 34 years.

all trained and commit between two to three hours a week to help prepare and deliver the national programmes that Scouts NZ prepare for us.

Scouts’ youth programmes are designed to educate youth and develop their emotional and community skills as they try new experiences. We teach individuals that they can succeed if they have a go at anything. If you enjoy outdoor activities like orienteering and camping, making things and helping children recognise their own potential, then we need you. We need adult helpers who assist the leaders each week (in addition to parent help) and helpers who can assist at times when we need extra hands. Now is a great time to get involved and be part of our great camps and outdoor programmes.

This exhibition is inspired by and is also a tribute to ‘Girl’s Own’ Annuals. It features work by five frighteningly fabulous, tremendously talented women; none of whom should be, or need to be rescued.

The five artists are:Susan Braithwaite Living in Little River, Susan’s artwork is a combination of jewellery and 3D sculpture, using new and vintage tins, in a unique patchwork art form. For this exhibition Susan has experimented with new sculptural shapes that fit with the Girl’s Own theme.

Jane DownesResiding in Little River, Jane’s sculptures explore the point where nature and the domestic meet science and engineering. She uses recycled, industrial and found materials to (re)create delicate, fleeting, familiar objects and the forms we treasured as children.

Katrina Perano

A Little River local, Katrina has been inspired by historical NZ and its creatures. Her whimsical paintings reflect the NZ and British influence of the ‘Girls own’ era, highlighting the delicacy of our New Zealand native species so at risk now.

Tiffany Thornley

“I loved the books when I was young, even though the girls were English and went to boarding schools. They were free of adults and parents, had fun and adventures and rescued people. I am sure that is when I learnt ‘Girls can do anything’”, says Christchurch painter and print maker Tiffany of her memories of the Girls Own annuals.

Barb Warren

Ohoka painter Barb again brings her dark and provocative narrative to Little River. Providing a different take on “girl’s own”, her paintings reflect girls as they once were and girls just as they are today.

Judgment dayHow often do you judge yourself? How often do you criticise yourself?

How often do you think, “I should have done this or that”? If you inquire deeply, what do you think about this pattern of yours?

Is there some notion that you ought to judge yourself, to justify not being good enough and needing to be better?

If it were possible to set aside the

As hard as it may be, try to avoid touching your face during the day because any dirt or oil from your hands can irritate your makeup.

DaphneI always know winter is nearing an end

once my Daphne leucanthe starts to come into bloom. The heady perfume that wafts around the patio is simply

divine. Inside, the fragrance hangs in the air, with the smallest of sprigs adding life even to the coldest of rooms.

This year I am feeling rather guilty about the state of my Daphne bush. Last season it took a major hammering, the bush that is, not just from the earthquake and falling chimney, but from my overzealous harvesting and picking.

So this season I am paying the price for being so greedy last year; I have fewer flowers to pick because I picked too many last season.

My poor plant will probably take a couple of seasons to recover after my overindulgence last winter.

To future-proof my needs for the following seasons I am going to combat the problem by planting more Daphne. This seems the most logical thing to do as I prefer to enjoy the plant indoors rather than out.

Daphne has long been a much-admired shrub in the home garden and for nine months of the year, I tend to forget all about it, until it begins to flower that is. Then for the next few months, I am drawn to it like a moth to a light bulb at night.

The thick heady fragrance indicates that spring isn’t far away and the garden is beginning to awaken after the doom of winter.

Daphne can be tricky sometimes if you don’t get a few basics right. They are not a plant renowned for having a long life, 10 to

15 years seems to be an average life span, although I have seen plenty which are twice that age.

Key DApHne tips:

■ Roots - Daphne is fussy about its roots; it hates its roots being disturbed, dug around or tickled. Don’t be tempted to plant annuals or bulbs directly under Daphne. ■ Fertiliser - Food is the second area to be aware of. They are fussy feeders and like an ever so slightly acidic soil. Too much nitrogen and they turn up their toes. A light annual application of acid fertiliser once a year after flowering is generally all that is required. ■ water - They must have a well-drained soil as they hate wet feet. Daphne shrubs are more likely to cope with dry feet than wet, so get the drainage right and you should be okay.■ pruning - Only prune after flowering and be careful not to prune back too hard. Hard pruning can cause the plant to sulk.

Daphne can sometimes be slow to flower if the winter has been particularly cold; don’t panic about this, they generally still bloom.

Happy gardening.

Rachel Vogan The Happy Gardener

Sweet reward: Although Daphnecan be quite fussy, its fragrance when

it blooms is well worth the

care.

Pivotal game for Greenpark

Tight defence: Greenpark A goal attack Zaylie Sullivan tries to get the ball past Lincoln A goal defence Anna Odell during the premier game at the Selwyn Netball Centre at Lincoln on Saturday. Greenpark rained on Lincoln’s parade.

Division II ‘Jack Masefield Shield’ and ‘Stuart Tolerton Memorial Cup’ semi-finals: Banks Peninsula 11, West Melton 0; Kirwee 11, Lincoln 6. Play-off games: Darfield 27, Hornby 7; Prebbleton win, Diamond Harbour, default; Bye Springston.

Division III ‘Senior Reserve Shield’ and ‘Bert Vickery Memorial Cup’ semi-finals: Dunsandel/Irwell Comb 20, Hornby 8; Waihora 27, Selwyn 6. Play-off games: Southbridge win, Kirwee defaulted.

Colts: ‘ERSU Junior Shield’ and Leeston RFC Cup’ semi-finals: Rolleston 8, Banks Peninsula 5; Waihora 26, Southbridge 13; Bye Lincoln. Section B: West Melton 7, Springston 10; Prebbleton 12, Darfield 13.

Shirley downs Lincoln UniLINCOLN University lost 26-17 to Shirley in Lincoln on Saturday. The teams were locked up 12-all at halftime but Shirley scored more points in the second spell, eventually running in four tries to three to take the game.

IT was a pivotal game for Greenpark A in the premier competition of the Selwyn Netball competition at Lincoln on Saturday – one it couldn’t afford to lose.

Down on points and knowing it needed to secure a top-four place to qualify for semi-finals in two weeks’ time, it was a big ask for the team who were up against top-placed Lincoln A.

However, Mother Nature might have just dealt the Greenpark girls a favourable hand with the rain somewhat stymieing the normally speedy, lofty and exuberant Lincoln team.

For the first time this season, Greenpark put together a calculated game plan and executed it with precision and ease – able to capitalise on Lincoln’s less controlled play and less successful shooting rate.

An injured Claire Tait returned to the court in the last quarter for Lincoln to try and take control but it was all a bit too little too late and the team was unable to get in front, with Greenpark taking the win 43 to 41.

With just two weeks to go and some of the top four teams still to play each other, there is still a long-shot opportunity for the middle-of-the-table teams to come through and upset by pushing a top contender out of the running for a semi-final space.

This weekend’s game to watch out for will be Greenpark A again taking on Broadfield A in another top-of-the-table clash.
