The Carbon SnakeChemical Reactions:• Powdered sugar reacts with sulfuric

acid to produce carbon and water• The reaction is exothermic, which means

it releases a lot of heat as it takes place.• This is known as a dehydration reaction

because water is removed from the sugar during the reaction– Because of the heat of the reaction, the

water produced evaporates during the reaction leaving the solid carbon as a product

• C6H12O6 + H2SO4 12 C + 11 H2O + a mixture of acid and water + Heat

Safety

• Wear gloves, an apron and goggles during the demo

• The demo should be performed in a fume hood due to the fumes released during the experiment

• Since heat is released during the reaction, make sure everythign has cooled down before you touch it or attempt to clean up the mess!
