On February 27, our student council organized anti-bullying day assemblies which were attended by all students. Our student council did a wonderful job! Hopefully, students learned about the difference they can make to prevent bullying. Many staff and stu- dents wore pink t-shirts that were designed by a Surrey student. The message is a good one: “See something, say something.” By winning our division in the Energy Cup, the school received $1000 to spend on energy conservation initiatives. We now move onto the Final Round! This takes place during the week of April 15-19. Thanks again to all staff and students for their support! Congratulations to Paul Langton, along with students Sahir Shivji, Jaleesa Chagan, and Brendan Pousett for organizing the week's events that led to our winning the division. Congratulations and thank you to Corinne Gray and Melanie Grant and their Globalizers Club for organizing a very successful Fun Fair March 1st. Congratulations and thank you to Paul Langton and our Junior Boys Basketball team for a great season. Out of 20 teams that made it to the provincials at Vancouver College, our boys finished 12th after winning 2 of their 4 games. They had a most challenging first game against Burnaby
South who went on to win the tournament. Before getting to the provincials, the junior boys fin-ished third in Surrey and fourth in the Fraser Valley’s. These are great accomplishments!

Sahir Shivji Sahir was the top leadership student this year earning a perfect 100%. He has continued a leadership role by being the main driving force of the District’s Energy Conservation Cup Chal-lenge. Sahir is involved in many school activities as he is genuinely committed to making Semi-ahmoo a great school to attend.

Jessica Arsenault, Heleena Parmar and Makailey Preston Jessica, Heleena and Makailey are peer tutors in the Learning Support BASES class. Jessica is very supportive to one of our students in Family Studies and has shown excellent leadership skills. She has an infectious enthusiasm and sunny personality. Heleena is friendly and kind to our students and helps to support a student in art class. She is easy going, positive and committed to her work. Makailey is kind, friendly and very positive and shares her enthusiasm and helpfulness to her peers in BASES. Makailey is delightful to have in our room.

Aren Zhao and Grace Chou Aren and Grace are sharing my nomination for Students of the Month because they worked cooperatively together to take a big group from the Art Club on an outing to the Vancouver Art Gallery during Spring Break on March 22. They also took charge of organizing transportation for everyone and all entry fees were paid for with funds raised by the Art Club through making art posters for other clubs and events. Aren and Grace also invited a guest speaker to accompany the students on the
tour to help narrate and analyze the exhibition. Eighteen Art Club students viewed and enjoyed the “Art Spiegel-man Co-Mix Show, as well as the Emily Carr Exhibit and the Faigenbaum Photo exhibit”. Everyone then concluded the field trip with lunch at the “Japadog”. Aren and Grace are very hardworking Vice Presidents of the Art Club with exceptional self motivation and leader-ship qualities. Their enthusiasm and dedication to the Art Club and school sprit are exemplary and they deserve the recognition of “Students of the Month”.
Bursaries and scholarships are available for students of Croatian ancestry who will be in full time attendance at any post-secondary institution in the fall (university, college or a vocational/technical institute). Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit and bursaries are awarded based on financial need. For more infor-mation see Ms. McGillivray in the counselling centre. Applications must be received by May 3, 2013. Monsanto Canada is offering several $1,500 scholarships for students who will be studying agriculture at a Canadian college or university and who have a farming background. For more information see Ms. McGillivray in the counselling centre. Deadline is May 24, 2013. The Canadian Mental Health Association is offering a bursary for students who have sought treatment for men-tal health issues or substance abuse issues and who are under age 19 and will be attending a BC university, college or technical school. Please see Ms. McGillivray in the counselling area for more information. The deadline for the application is May 20, 2013

Lauren Simpson swims with Surrey Special Olym-pics. It was March 17 2013, Coquitlam's Special Olympics annual swim meet at the Chimo Aquatic Centre. The event was women's 25M backstroke. Lauren beat her qualifying time by 13.05 seconds for a personal best. Congratulations Lauren!

Totems in the News! High school students play it up at yearly one-act drama festival By Tom Zillich, Now February 28, 2013 Seven productions were staged during the 2013 edition of Surrey One-Act Drama Festival, a celebration of high school theatre. Five schools were involved in the two-day festival, held on Feb. 13 and 14 at Enver Creek Secondary, combining the Association of B.C. Drama Educators' Zone and Surrey District Drama Festival. The festival included realistic slices of life, 19th-century period pieces, futuristic science fiction, student-written material and a musical-theatre comedy. "This year's festival had it all," said Craig Wrotniak, drama and dance instructor at North Surrey Secondary and also vice-president of Surrey Drama Teachers' Association. "This year had the unique challenge of a crazy flu bug, (which) meant four of the seven shows lost lead actors and had to have understudies take on lead roles at the last minute," Wrotniak told the Now. "Even with all of the unexpected casting changes, the performances real-ly showed the hard work that the student performers, technicians and teacher/directors put in." Secondary schools involved in the festival were Clayton Heights, North Surrey, Southridge, Enver Creek and Semiahmoo. This year, the festival was supported by Rob Dugan, as festival stage manager, and Phil Schulze, as tech-booth co-ordinator. The job of picking plays to represent Surrey (zone 13) at the provincial festival hosted by ABCDE (Association of British Columbia Drama Educators, May 2-5 at Douglas College) was given to adjudi-cator Scott Swan. He awarded Southridge's four-character dramatic production of Doubt: A Parable as Zone Out-standing Production and North Surrey Secondary's 50-person musical comedy High School Sucks: A Cinderella Story the runner-up (Zone Alternate Award).
Awards for Outstanding Contribution by an Ensemble went to Clayton Heights Secondary's produc-tion, Underneath, North Surrey Secondary's two entries, Property Rites and High School Sucks: A Cinderella Story. Selena LaBelle, a student at Semiahmoo Secondary, earned Most Promising Young Artist honours for her work to write, direct and act in her school's Penny the Puppet. Awards of Outstanding Contribution to Their Production went to Tyson Robertson and Freya Puszka (both of Clayton Heights Secondary), and Salton Chester, Amber Rold, Daniella Brekke and
Gil Tongil (all of North Surrey Secondary). Outstanding Contribution by an Actor in a Lead Role awards went to Pahul Dhillon and Argel Monte de Ramos (both of Enver Creek), Serena Bonneville, Bryan Redies, Nirvon Soraya-Golos and Abby Wells (Southridge), and Jennifer Duong and Kaitlin Sandwell (Clayton Heights).
Awards for Outstanding Contribution by an Actor in a Supporting Role were given to Brittany Nanra (Clayton Heights), Blake Hobson-Dimas (Enver Creek), Tommy Homsami and Celia Sutton (both of Semiahmoo) and North Surrey students Katie Rose Conners, Linh Ngo, Elliot Alexis, Amber Rold, Peter Deng, Josh Baidoo, Gil Tongil, Christine Wang, Hanna Fuergutz, Nicole Chaput and Mikaela Castano.
Totems in the News! Scholarships abound, including four for Semiahmoo athletes By Corry Anderson-Fennell There must be something in the water at Semiahmoo Secondary. Or maybe it’s in the sports drinks.
Four students in the school’s graduating class - Meghan Palesch, Alison Williams, Emma Fletcher and Sam Dion - have all been awarded athletic scholarships to prestigious US universities.
Palesch, one of the top high school hurdlers in the country, joins the University of Idaho’s track and field/cross country team; middle-distance runner Williams will be at the University of Texas; and soccer standouts Emma Fletcher and Sam Dion join Louisiana State and St. Mary’s college, respectively. The scholarships are from 80 per cent coverage to full-ride, four-year awards.
“I’m super pumped,” says Williams, a national silver medalist in 2010 in the 800m. Williams’ personal best in the 800m is 2:12:74 and she hopes to run under 2:10 this year. She’s also run the 400m 57.23 and was part of the Semiahmoo team that won the Canadian national Cross-Country Championship this year - a first for Semiahmoo.
Running is in Williams’ genes, as she’s the daughter of Olympians. Her mom is bronze medalist (3,000m) Lynn Kanuka and her dad is long-distance runner Paul Williams, who competed in three consecutive Summer Olym-pics and is a four-time national champion in the men’s 5,000m.
“I’m lucky because my parents never pushed me; it’s always been my decision to train and compete,” says Wili-ams, whose mom is also her coach.
Palesch set a Canadian youth record in the 200m hurdles at the 2010 Canadian Youth Track and Field champion-ships and won the 60m hurdles at the 2013 Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome Indoor Games in February with a time of 8.87, which is the second-fastest junior time in Canada this season.
Fletcher and Dion both play for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC youth girls team. Fletcher actually lives in Victoria but stays with Dion’s family in South Surrey in order to play for the Whitecaps. She’s excited to join the Louisiana State soccer program and move to Baton Rouge.
“There are big opportunities with college girls soccer.”
Dion, who is off to the San Francisco Bay Area, says she’s looking forward to lots of game time with the St. Mary's Gaels.
“I wanted to go somewhere where I’d get lots of minutes on the field and I’m excited for the new experiences.”
Dion may be following in her Uncle Darrell’s footsteps, as he played for the Canadian national team.
