The Department of Standards Malaysia (Standards

Malaysia) a government agency under the Ministry of

Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) has

established the Working Group (WG) on Stationary

Source Emissions under the authority of Industry

Standards Committee on Environmental Management.

The working group had developed MS 1723:2017,

Performance Evaluation of Air Pollution Control and

Treatment Systems – Dry Dust Collectors – Specification

(First Revision), this Malaysian Standard cancels and

replaces MS 1723:2003, Performance Evaluation of Air

Pollution Control and Treatment Systems: Mechanical

Dust Collectors.

The revised standard requires simultaneous inlet/outlet

isokinetic measurements, implying a two sets of standard

isokinetic measuring equipment and teams. The standard

now allows for a different testing method that simplifies the

test measurements to be more practical and safer in

certain restrictive situations.

(FIRST REVISION)

The scope of the standard had been broadened to include

all Dry Collection Systems, which now include

Electrostatic Precipitators, Media Filters, Axial Flow

Vortex Tubes Filter, Cyclones and Multicyclone Filters,

etc. Due to the difficulties encountered in certain

restrictive situation, an alternative method had been

added to use the collected dust from the dust collector. An

accurate flow measurements is used whereby the

collected dust is compared with the emission

concentration. Once this is done, the same principle is

used to calculate the Dust Collector Performance.

Pollution Control especially Consultants and

Accredited Testing Laboratories that would like

to expand their services to include Air Pollution

Who are we?

Governed by the Standards of Malaysia Act 1996 (Act 549), the Department of Standards Malaysia

(Standards Malaysia) is an agency established on 28 August 1996 under the purview of the Ministry of

Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). Standards Malaysia is the National Standards and

Accreditation Body of Malaysia providing confidence to various stakeholders, through credible

standardisation and accreditation services for global competitiveness. Our aspiration is to create a culture of

quality amongst Malaysians, to make standards an accepted component of businesses locally and to achieve

global recognition for our products and services; thus improving the overall quality of life. As the National

Standards Body, Standards Malaysia is entrusted to develop national standards (Malaysian Standards –

MS). Standards Malaysia has appointed six Standards Development Agencies (SDAs) to manage the

development of MS and coordinate Malaysia’s participation at international standardisation activities, i.e. ISOand IEC. The SDAs are:

SIRIM Berhad

Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB)

Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM)

Malaysian Association of Standards Users (Standards Users)

Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA)

Malaysian Rubber Board (Lembaga Getah Malaysia, LGM)

Where to get MS, ISO and IEC standards?

For more than 20 years, we have successfully developed more than 6,000 MS and actively participated in

ISO and IEC standards development activities. This has contributed to Malaysia’s competitive edge by

facilitating trade through international recognition of our products and services that complied with MS orinternational standards. The MS can be purchased online through www.msonline.gov.my.
