Internet of Things (IoT) is a technology and a market development based on the inter-connection of everyday objects among themselves and applications.

IoT will enable an ecosystem of smart applications and services, which will improve and simplify people lives.

Whereas in the first run Internet of Things referred to the advent of barcodes and Radio-frequency identification (RFID), helping to automate inventory, tracking and basic identification, the second current wave of IoT sees a strong verve for connecting sensors, objects, devices, data and applications.

• The next wave could be called a “cognitive IoT”, facilitating object and data reuse across application domains, leveraging on hyper-connectivity, interoperability solutions and semantic enriched information distribution, incorporating intelligence at different levels, in the objects, devices, network(s), systems and in the applications for evidence-based decision making and priority setting.

• At the same time, the IoT will bring hyper-connectivity to a global society, using augmented and rich interfaces.

• This global society will also be characterized by higher semi-autonomous system behavior than today.

• Smart cities are an obvious application of IoT as a horizontal enabler, covering sustainable smart grids, smart mobility and smart health.

• Advances in integration and miniaturization of ultra-low power components and micro systems and increased autonomy and flexibility of service robots is accelerating the diffusion of embedded ICT in all types of physical objects and artefacts ranging from clothes and even bodies to homes, cars and transport systems, as well as all public spaces and cities.

Programme Approach• The FI-PPP follows an industry-driven, holistic approach encompassing

R&D on network and communication infrastructures, devices, software, service and media technologies;

• In parallel, it promotes their experimentation and validation in real application contexts, bringing together demand and supply and involving users early in the research lifecycle.

• The new platform will thus be used by a range actors, in particular SMEs and Public Administrations, to validate the technologies in the context of smart applications and their ability to support “user driven” innovation schemes.

FIA-FP7 ProgramThe European Future Internet Assembly also known as FIA, is a collaboration between projects that have recognized the need to strengthen European activities on the Future Internet to maintain European competitiveness in the global marketplace.

Currently FIA brings together around 150 research projects that are part of Challenge 1 of the ICT program of FP7 (the Seventh Framework Program - FP7).

These projects are advancing the state of the art in:

• The network of the future• Cloud Computing, Internet of Services and Advanced Software Engineering• Internet-connected objects• Trustworthy ICT• Networked Media and Search Systems• Socio-economic considerations for the Future Internet• Application domains for the Future Internet• Future Internet Research and Experimentation (FIRE)

The Assembly is structured to permit open interactions and cross-fertilization across technical domains, reaching out to whoever has talent in Europe's Future Internet research community and it works towards:

• Vision, challenges, scenarios and roadmaps for FI research.

• The development of pre-normative principles, concepts, design, architectures, recommendations and functional specifications of key FI system components and their interfaces

• The development and maintenance of a consolidated calendar of events

• Steering the FIA community towards a higher degree of coordination and integration of the FI research actions by improving communication and collaboration between participating communities and improving the visibility of research results.

FIA is open to all researchers engaged in Future Internet research (be they at EU or not) to contribute and participate towards FIA’s goals

The organization of the FIA is supported by several organizations, projects and individuals:

• European Commission, as overall coordinator

• “Caretakers”, these are representatives coming from the different research domains that select the topics for the FIA conference and organize parallel sessions

• Coordination and support action (CSA) projects that are committed to support the FIA. These are called FISA projects (Future Internet Support Actions).

FIA Working GroupsIn between conferences, collaboration among projects and individuals is encouraged through FIA Working Groups. Each project is expected to contribute to at least one technical WG.

• A number of technical FIA WG are/will be set-up in accordance with the FIA objectives, expected technical results and based on an open call for WGs.

• Each WGs’ membership would be from multiple FP7 project teams and multiple domains.

• Each WG will register its tasks (e.g. rational, scope, activities, results, etc.) with the FIA SC (Steering Committee) and will maintain an open Web presence (i.e. membership, scope, work plan and results).

• The WGs will produce some of the FIA deliverables as identified in Section 5 under the steering of FIA SC.

• The WG tasks and work progress will be periodically reviewed and monitored by FIA SC on an annual basis.

• If a WG is not longer delivering to FIA objectives the group will be closed by the FIA SC.

ASPIRE - Advanced Sensors and lightweight Programmable middleware for Innovative Rfid Enterprise applications

• Will change the current RFID deployment paradigm, through introducing and boosting a shift towards royalty-free RFID middleware, while also placing the middleware at the heart of RFID infrastructures.

• In this paradigm a great deal of an RFID's solution intelligence is place on the middleware, which is freely offered to end-users (particularly SMEs).

• Accordingly, the RFID middleware can integrate with low-cost hardware, as well as with legacy IT and networking infrastructures of the networked enterprise.

• To support this paradigm ASPIRE will develop and deliver a lightweight, royalty-free, programmable, privacy friendly, standards-compliant, scalable, integrated and intelligent middleware platform that will facilitate low-cost development and deployment of innovative fully automatic RFID solutions.

• Is a project focused on security and resilience across ad-hoc PANs and wireless sensor networks.

• In order to realize the vision of Ambient Intelligence in a future network and service environment, heterogeneous wireless sensor and actuator networks (WS&AN) have to be integrated into a common framework of global scale and made available to services and applications via universal service interfaces.

• SENSEI creates an open, business driven architecture that fundamentally addresses the scalability problems for a large number of globally distributed WS&A devices.

• It provides necessary network and information management services to enable reliable and accurate context information retrieval and interaction with the physical environment.

• By adding mechanisms for accounting, security, privacy and trust it enables an open and secure market space for context-awareness and real world interaction.

Key points in the SENSEI vision of Ambient Intelligence in a future network and service environment integrating wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSAN) efficiently into the Future Internet:

• The growing importance of context-awareness as an enabler for more intelligent, invisible and autonomous

• Applications and services has highlighted the need for a greater integration of the physical with the digital world;

• The lack of an open framework for WSAN is leading to the emergence of closed vertically integrated WSAN

• Deployments that will prevent re-use of context information for new applications and services;

• The observation that embedded sensors and actuators will make up the majority of connected devices in the Future Internet.

• Future Internet and their specific requirements will have a strong impact on the design of the Future Internet.

1. A highly scalable architectural framework with corresponding protocol solutions that enable easy plug and play integration of a large number of globally distributed WSAN into a global system – providing support for network and information management, security, privacy and trust and accounting;

2. An open service interface and corresponding semantic specification to unify the access to context information and actuation services offered by the system for services and applications;

3. Efficient WSAN island solutions consisting of a set of cross-optimized and energy aware protocol stacks including an ultra low power multi-mode transceiver targetting 5nJ/bit;

4. Pan European test platform, enabling large scale experimental evaluation of the SENSEI results and execution of field trials - providing a tool for long term evaluation of WSAN integration into the Future Internet.

Based on industrially led business cases, scenarios and socio-economic analysis, SENSEI achieves its goal and vision by (1/2):

• Investigating and researching sensor information services to intelligently and profitably generate sensor based context information as well as provide actuation functionalities, both at the necessary level of quality while maintaining scalability and supporting adaptability;

• Researching and developing a scalable sensor and actuator networking framework that enables information to be used globally and heterogeneous sensors and networks of sensors to be interoperable, efficiently managed and easily added to the framework through Plug & Play tools (PnP);

SMARTSANTANDER

• One of the main objectives of the project is to fuel the use of the experimental facility among the scientific community, end users and service providers in order to reduce the technical and societal barriers that prevent the IoT concept to become an everyday reality.

• To attract the widest interest and demonstrate the usefulness of the SmartSantander platform, a key aspect that will be addressed, is the inclusion of a wide set of applications.

• Application areas are selected based on their high potential impact on the citizens as well as to exhibit the diversity, dynamics and scale that are essential in advanced protocol and algorithmic solutions, and will be able to be evaluated through the platform.

• Thus, the platform is intended to be attractive for all involved stakeholders: Industries, communities of users, other entities that are willing to use the experimental facility for deploying and assessing new services and applications as well as Future Internet researchers to validate their cutting-edge technologies (protocols, algorithms, radio interfaces, etc.).

• Will provide a multi-level infrastructure of interconnected “testbeds” of largescale wireless sensor networks for research purposes, pursuing an interdisciplinary approach that integrates the aspects of hardware, software, algorithms, and data.

• This will demonstrate how heterogeneous small-scale devices and “testbeds” can be brought together to form well-organized, large-scale structures, rather than just some large network;

• It will allow research not only at a much larger scale, but also in different quality, due to heterogeneous structure and the ability to deal with dynamic scenarios, both in membership and location.

The Internet of Things Initiative

• The IoT Initiative is a coordinated action on that will support the development of the European IoT community for the next years.

• The IoT initiative (IoT-i), a EU Framework Programme 7 project, started in September 2010, brings together key actors from all relevant but currently fragmented IoT communities in Europe to work jointly towards a common vision of the Internet of Things.

• It represents the first serious attempt in building a unified IoT community in Europe, going across boundaries of disparate technology sectors, in order to create a joint European strategic vision of the Internet of Things and aligning this vision with the current developments on the Future Internet.

• IoT-i pursues the achievement of the following strategic objectives:– Creating a joint strategic and technical vision for the IoT in Europe that encompasses the

currently fragmented sectors of the IoT domain holistically.– Contribute to the creation of an economically sustainable and socially acceptable

environment in Europe for IoT technologies and respective R&D activities.– Creating an environment that favors international adoption of European IoT technology.

Architecture and Interoperability – Why need?

• During the course of the flagship project on IoT Architecture, namely FP7 IoT-A, a large part of the project effort was dedicated to coming up with an Architectural Reference Model for the IoT– nicknamed ARM.

• The ARM is not an IoT Architecture, but rather a generic Reference Architecture (and architecting framework) that covers holistically the architecting activity and can be used in order to derive concrete IoT architectures.

The ARM is made of three main parts:

1. A set of models: i. Domain model,

ii. Information Model,

iii. Communication Model,

iv. Functional Model and

3. A large set of guidelines (Including a precise description of the architecting process itself and an open list of Design choices) that help architects in deriving their concrete architecture according to their specific requirements.
