Seminary New Testament Lesson 8 – Matthew 4 The Wilderness Experience – Calling the Twelve
I. Lesson Outline

i. Have student scriptures, journals, clipboards and pencils ready b. Cultural Hall Stations
i. Station 1 1. Enter center of accordion doors between chapel and cultural hall 2. Focus activity from manual (make it 40 seconds)

ii. Station 2 1. Display picture of Christ in the Wilderness 2. Read Matthew 4:1-‐2 to them – including footnote b JST
translation. iii. Station 3 – Temptations – one volunteer for each object – read card
and answer question 1. Matthew 4:3-‐4
a. Stones b. What desire did Satan try to appeal to when he tempted
Jesus, who had been fasting, to turn the stones into bread? (He tried to appeal to the desire to satisfy physical appetite.)
2. Matthew 4:5-‐7 a. Ladder – have question card on the top
3. Matthew 4:8-‐11 a. Crown b. What was false about Satan’s offer to give Jesus the
kingdoms of the world? (Satan promised rewards that were not his to give and that he could not provide.)
4. Sit on blanket on floor in center of temptations with a clock and these three cards face down – choose and read cards:
a. Jesus would eventually satisfy His hunger and even turn an earthly substance into food (see John 2:1–11).
b. Jesus would receive divine confirmation of and assistance with His ministry (see Matthew 17:1–5; Luke 22:41–44)
c. Jesus will one day rule the world (Zechariah 14:9; Revelation 11:15).
5. TELL THEM -‐ For Jesus to have obtained these desired ends in the ways Satan tempted Him—instead of waiting for the right time and the right way—would have been a selfish abuse of the Savior’s power. Jesus would establish His divine identity as the Son of God in ways that aligned with Heavenly Father’s will, not with Satan’s bidding. (See Jeffrey R. Holland, “The Inconvenient Messiah,” Ensign, Feb. 1984, 68–73.)
6. Ask -‐ What was similar about the Savior’s responses to each temptation? (Jesus responded to each of Satan’s temptations by quoting from the scriptures.)

HOW THE SCRIPTURES HELP TO OVERCOME TEMPTATIONS Three sins that youth my age might be tempted to
commit
A way Satan tries to entice us to commit each
of these sins

My Scripture Verse to apply when tempted to sin:
Timing is EVERYTHING
A-Jesus would eventually satisfy
His hunger and even turn an earthly substance into food
(see John 2:1–11)
B-Jesus would receive divine
confirmation of and assistance with His ministry
(see Matthew 17:1–5; Luke 22:41–44)
C-Jesus will one day rule
the world (Zechariah 14:9; Revelation 11:15).
#1-What did the Savior call
Peter, Andrew, James, and John to do?
#2-What is a “[fisher] of men”?
#3-What would these men be sacrificing to follow the Savior and assist
in His work?
#4-What did you notice about the response
of these men?
#5-Would these men do more good in their lives
as fishermen or as “fishers of men”?
#6-What can happen if we immediately respond to
the Savior’s invitations to follow Him?
#7- When have you, or someone you know, experienced
similar blessings for leaving behind worldly concerns in order to follow the Savior?
#8- Why do you think it is important to respond immediately
to the Savior’s invitations to follow Him?
#9- How can you better respond to the Savior’s
invitations to follow Him? (Everyone write their own answer in their journal)
“Men and women who turn their lives over to God will discover that
He can make a lot more out of their lives than they can. He will
deepen their joys, expand their vision, quicken their minds, strengthen their muscles, lift their
spirits, multiply their blessings, increase their opportunities, comfort their souls, raise up friends, and pour out peace. Whoever will lose his life
in the service of God will find eternal life”
(“Jesus Christ—Gifts and Expectations,” Ensign, Dec. 1988, 4).
