Principal’s Message - Mensaje de la directora
Although the proposal to reduce the legal voting age in Alberta from 18 to 16 was recently
overturned, the 13-14 year-old Gr. 9 students at Senator Patrick Burns have a thing or two
to say about politics, the democratic process, and the position of our various political
candidates on key issues such as immigration, sustainable energy, and national identity.
SPB is a registered Student Vote school (www.studentvote.ca), which is a parallel election
for students under the voting age, coinciding with the federal election. The purpose is to
provide young Canadians with an opportunity to experience the voting process firsthand
and to build the habits of informed and engaged citizenship.
As part of the process of becoming informed about the upcoming federal election on Oct.
19, our students are learning about the qualities of leadership. How do our political
candidates convince us that they can lead our country? What are their party platforms?
What values do their actions reflect? What do their own party members say about who they
are as leaders?
Building student leadership is an inherent aspect of the hidden curriculum – whether in
humanities, environmental stewardship, physical education or through holistic lifestyle
practices. Our country, our city, and our school require leaders who live and lead with
integrity. The oldest students in our school will practice just that on Oct. 8 when they will
make presentations to each classroom about the position of the national political parties.
On Oct. 14 they will take on the role of deputy returning officers and polls clerks and cast
ballots for the official election candidates, in the school library. Results from each
participating school across the country will be tabulated nationally and by riding and will
also be shared with media for broadcast and publication.
JK Rowling, in her novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, writes, “It is a curious thing,
Harry, but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it.
Those who, like you, have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because
they must find to their own surprise that they wear it well.”
Let us take up the mantle and set an example for our young ones, our emerging leaders.
Let us speak about authentic and servant leadership at home, around the dinner table, and
within the classroom. Moreover, let us assume our responsibility as Canadians and
participate in an informed vote to elect the next leader of our country, the next Canadian
prime minister – whether that be during the student vote on Oct. 14th or on the federal
election day on Oct. 19th.
Yours truly,
Marlene Krickhan, Principal / Directora

The SPB School Handbook: Our Guide
The school handbook contains all of the guiding principles and procedural requests for a
smoothly functioning, safe and friendly school campus. Each family received a hard copy in
the opening package on Sept. 1st; digital copies are found online at the SPB homepage.
The following points are of particular importance for parents to reference together with their
children on a regular basis:
Extended Absence Form and procedures for reporting absences from school
Procedures for signing in late and signing out early
Digital Citizenship Contract (the use of electronic devices)
Home-school communication protocols
Last Chance to Buy-a-Brick for the SPB Courtyard Project!
We are pleased to be moving well in the direction of Phase 2 of the courtyard
re-design, which was originally conceived by Grade 6 students in 2013 (now in
Grade 8). The CBE grounds department removed the asphalt in the courtyard
on Sept.25; we are hopeful that the hard-scaping portion of the project plan will
commence by mid-October. If you did not participate in the Buy-a-Brick
fundraiser in June, now is your last chance! Consider leaving your legacy at
SPB – your child’s name can be remembered long into the future! Go to
http://spbcourtyard.myfreesites.net to pledge your donation. Donation tax
receipts are available. Email [email protected] for more information. Orders for
engraved bricks will be received until Thursday October 8th
.
U of C “Bridges to Teaching in Alberta” at SPB
SPB is the proud host of the “Bridge to Teaching in Alberta” University of Calgary class.
The cohort of 15 internationally trained and certified teachers are from more than eight
countries and are in the process of becoming certified in Alberta. Together with their
university instructors, the teachers will have classes on the SPB campus on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Thursday for five weeks. We welcome them to our campus!
Grade 8 Water Quality Field Trip
All grade 8 students will be going on a field trip to the Elbow Valley region to observe the
headwater for Calgary’s drinking water. We will test the water at various points along the
Elbow River in order to observe the impact that various land use can have. Volunteers are
still needed for the 13th and 14
th. Please contact Ms. Lamboo at [email protected] for
more information. Thank you for your support with this program.
NSA Updates
Our student-athletes have had an unprecedented amount of success since the end of
August, in our hockey and baseball programs. They are making high-level elite teams and
we are proud of them, their parents and their coaches. For our NSA student-athletes, the
new SPB Friday schedule allows for a new opportunity to provide additional study times
(with Sra. Krickhan) and to begin to work on a digital yearbook (with Mr. Roger). Speak to
your children to learn more about how Friday is benefitting them in achieving greater
school-sport balance!

Career Technology Foundations Challenge Coming Nov.2-6!
We are excited about the upcoming the CTF week at SPB! Career & Technology
Foundation (CTF) is a provincially mandated program of studies for students in Grades 5-9;
the inquiry-based, hands-on activities focus on developing an interest in a particular
occupational area. This personalized learning allows for the development of specific skills
through the processes of design, creation, appraisal and communication. CTF challenges
or tasks that integrate at least two occupational areas provide students with an opportunity
to experience the skills, knowledge and technologies associated with those occupational
areas. Teachers at SPB have selected a field of their expertise and interest and will share
that passion with the students who choose their CTF project. The entire week will be spent
exploring, discovering, investigating, planning, and creating a project. Final assessment will
be evaluated on the 1st term report card. Students will be responsible to communicate
throughout the week what they have learned about themselves as learners and learned
skills throughout the project. It is very important that students be present at school for the
duration of the week (no family holidays, please!)
On Mon. Oct. 5, students will receive a CTF Challenge Option Sheet in which they must
carefully select a project that aligns with their grade and peaks their interest. The project
descriptions and option sheets will be sent out in electronic form to parents, and in hard
copy form to students. Forms must be completed and returned to the main office by Thurs.
Oct. 8; they will be received in a first-come-first served basis, similar to the annual
Complementary Classes selections students in Gr. 7-9 receive each May. Students must
complete the CTF Challenge Option Sheet with their first, second and third choice. Each
project will have a set number of students. Students will be assigned to one project for the
entire week. Once selected for a project, students will receive further instructions from the
CTF teacher regarding materials, locations and other details of the week.
CTF Challenges for varying grades will include:
Outdoor Geocaching
Stomp!
Relive-the-Renaissance
Outdoor Adventuring
Challenging Da Vinci
Trip of a Lifetime
SPB Restaurant Apprenticeship
FlashArt Mob
The Power of Photography
Furniture Flip
Science Fair
Planning for this year’s Calgary Youth Science Fair is already
underway. SPB students have represented us in previous years at the fair with fascinating
explorations of various types of science. If your child is interested in completing a Science
Fair project, please have them attend an informational meeting on November 4th in Room
29. Please contact Ms. Lamboo at [email protected] for more information.

Athletics
Hola Broncos!
Athletics are alive and well at Senator Patrick Burns. We
have a variety of teams engaged in team play as we enter
October. The Cross Country team has been practicing
hard during lunch period. They won their first meet in September 23rd
. SPB has four
volleyball teams. Junior Girls and Boys teams are coached by Srta. Molia and Sr. Inostroza
respectively. The Senior Girls are coached by Mr. Paul and Ms. Cassin is coaching the
Senior Boys team. All volleyball teams started their season with a win. The soccer teams
were very popular with many Broncos trying out for both the girls and the boy teams.
Finally, SPB offers student intramurals during their lunch break. The purpose for this is to
encourage all of our grades to be active participants and to have FUN, FUN and more FUN
in a recreational setting.
SPB Gets a Face Lift!
On Sept. 23, the CBE facilities and maintenance department began
a 10 week painting project, which includes all of the main hallways,
lunchroom, gymnasium, bathrooms, change rooms and library.
The preparation phase will be completed by October 5th, after
which painting will commence. Prepare to see a new and
revitalized interior facility before the winter break! Email [email protected] if
you wish to receive more information about the type of paint used, contents, and the
healthy and safety measures put in place to ensure that everyone’s learning and movement
throughout the building remains unaffected for the duration of the project.
Revitalize the Library!
An exciting library revitalization plan is being
implemented in conjunction with the school painting
project. New shelving and student furniture will be
purchased throughout the upcoming school year (with
support from fundraising initiatives), with anticipated
completion by May 2016. The library will have limited use from Oct. 13-Nov.16 as painting
and shelving removal is completed.
Wiseguyz Program at SPB
We are pleased to be partnering for the second year with Calgary Sexual
Health's Wiseguyz Program, which is a CBE-approved and endorsed community resource
for Grade 9 boys. This program is designed around a human rights framework to promote
positive masculinity in our school and society. Wiseguyz mentors work with small groups of
SPB boys whose parents have registered them for participation in weekly sessions with
Wiseguyz mentors. Find more information about Wiseguyz and their research initiatives at

New Waste Management System at SPB
The CBE has made a system wide shift in its waste management
requirements that follow a similar direction of the City of Calgary
waste management processes. SPB is already ahead in the race
towards creating a sustainable school environmental program, as
it is one of only 65 schools (out of 225) that is entering its fifth year
of sorting its garbage and collecting organic materials for correct
disposal. We are proud of this accomplishment and have invested
in nine Comprehensive Waste Stations (CWS) in main areas of the school that will
replace all former waste bins. There are five categories for correct waste management:
(i)Paper Shredding, (ii) Waste (iii) Recyclables, (iv) Refundables, and (v) Organics. We
request that all individuals who enter our school and create waste, use citizenship and
conscientiousness in correctly sorting it. Reduce the amount of waste you create!
Consider a garbage-free lunch!
Wind Energy at SPB!
Last school year students successfully raised $3792.00 in funds through bottle collections which will be used to source our school with wind energy for a one year period. Operating our school on wind energy requires students to bring one dollar worth of bottles (4 to 5 refundables) per month. This is a simple and easy equation: 552 students plus 4 to 5 bottles equals wind energy for one year! Join the cause!
During the week of Oct. 26-29 students will be requested to bring in 3 bottles from home (or more) to their classroom teacher. It will be our first Green Week of the school year (there will be a Green Week every month). We will launch the week with a major event to announce that Senator Patrick Burns has become the first school in Calgary, and Canada, to be run on wind electricity. Starting on November 1
st, SPB will begin
purchasing its electricity from Bullfrog Power, a company dedicated to generating emission free electricity. Bullfrog Power will generate all SPB electricity needs and put it in the electrical grid (through the regular CBE provider, Enmax) on behalf of our school. To celebrate this accomplishment, we are inviting numerable honourable guests to celebrate in the launch. More details to follow!
Healthy Hunger at SPB
On Thursday, October 1st
, we kicked off the Healthy Hunger Program at SPB. All food will
be served out of the cafeteria window, beginning with Gr. 6 at 11:40 am each Thursday.
Grades 7-9 will be reminded (by PA announcement) to come to the cafeteria to receive their
Healthy Hunger lunch during the regular lunch hour. In addition to Healthy Hunger items,
we will also be selling juice boxes for $1. These juice boxes will be separate from Healthy
Hunger orders. If students are absent, their lunches will be held for them until the following
day in the staffroom fridge. After Friday’s nutrition break, all leftover food will be given away.
To sign up for Healthy Hunger, parents will need to register online at
https://www.healthyhunger.ca. You can click on the tab in the middle of the page that says
“Parents”. You will have until 5 days prior to that week’s healthy hunger schedule to order.
This month’s vendors will include Extreme Pita, Opa, Quiznos, Edo, and Little Caesars,
respectively. We are currently seeking parent volunteers to help with the sales and
distribution of food during lunch. If you are available between 11:00-12:30 on Thursdays,
please contact Jo-Ann H at [email protected].

Terry Fox
Senator Patrick Burn took part in the 35th anniversary Terry Fox Run on
September 18th 2015. 551 students and staff participated in this run
that recognizes the fight against cancer. Leading up to the Terry Fox
Run, we had Hat Day and Leadership students create posters to
recognize the importance of Terry Fox to our Canadian Identity.
Thank you so much SPB for your donations this past week. I want all
of you to know, that as of May 2014 the Terry Fox Foundation has
raised over $650 million dollars to support cancer research. In every
sense you have contributed to the total. Thank you so much, SPB,
Muchas Gracias. Terry Fox’s legacy is alive here at Senator Patrick Burns.

$100.
Do you or someone you know own a business and can offer a service or unique experience

Another way to contribute….
Sponsor an Item for Auction
You can also donate by sponsoring an item for auction. There is a selection of items to
choose from with varied dollar values. How does that work? You look over a list of
potential auction items and choose which one you would like to commit to donate to.
Please contact director Carolyn H. at [email protected] if you would like to
donate an item / experience or sponsor an item for auction.
