whether you are already a keen home plant enthusiast or are just planning how to decorate your new home, you might be interested to hear that there may be a lot more to home plants then merely providing an attractive decorative feature.Indoor house plants can in fact purify the air, bringing fresh energy into the home. The ancient Asian practice of Feng Shui believes that adorning your home with certain well placed plants, will in fact lead to a more prosperous life. whether, this is true or not, a beautiful array of indoor plants can certainly lift a room. But be careful not to be too neglectful and ensure that you look after your plants by watering them and keeping them trim. This will prevent any negative or stagnant energy from hanging in the air. As well as creating a positive and welcoming hub, certain indoor plants can also generate beneficial psychological and physiological effects. Generally, plants that are spiky or have

pointy leaves are often referred to as “yang-like plants” and are great for mental stimulation. On the other hand, “yin-like plants” such as Jade, which have a rounder appearance, are said to sooth the sole and rest the mind.Feeling a bit down or moody? Indoor plants could be your answer. Invest in some nice scented plants such as Lemon Geraniums, Basil, Rosemary or Lilies. Picking a type that best match your personality will always create a pleasing personal space. Personally, I’m very fond of fresh flowers and I’m sure many will agree there is nothing like a vase of beautiful, freshly cut flowers to lift a room and your mood. But not only do they do a good job of cheering us up, they might actually bring us luck. That is if you don’t leave them to wilt. Dried flowers are believed to generate negative vibes, so go for artificial arrangements instead, which are thought to great an aura of happiness. But for me fresh flowers win every time!

This month we delve into the topic of landscaping at Durrat Al Bahrain and the measures Durrat Resort Management take to ensure all outdoors areas are kept in tip top shape. ULIS: thank you for inviting us, you have a lovely home and garden. when did you move in? Abdul Rahim: Quite a few months back, it’s our second home so we spend a lot of time here at the weekend. My daughters are back on holiday at the moment so it’s their getaway during the week!ULIS: it’s the perfect getaway! How is your family enjoying it? Abdul Rahim: They love it. Being by the sea is fantastic, my son is mad about fishing and is always catching something. I love being outdoors and spending time in the garden.

ULIS: you really have put a lot of work into your garden.why is it important to you to have a good garden?Abdul Rahim: I love the sea views, but it's important to have colour in your garden. Colour works well in a seaside environment!ULIS: did you put it together yourself?Abdul Rahim: I worked with a landscaping company, Rabya Landscaping, and they helped me with the design and provided some good advice. They also put together the soft landscaping. I looked after the hard landscaping.

ULIS: where did you get your concrete tiles? they are really eye catching.Abdul Rahim: I actually designed some of the larger ones myself and sourced the others. Designing furniture and household features is a hobby I really enjoy.ULIS: what would you recommend for those wanting to start their own garden?Abdul Rahim: Talk to Durat Business Development (DBD) nursery for advice. The soil here is different from the rest of Bahrain and it needs to be treated carefully for plants to thrive.

ULIS: good advice. any particular plants you would recommend? Abdul Rahim: The plants people decide to use are a personal choice, but I would recommend something long lasting and durable that requires low maintenance and watering. Petunias are a good choice and bring lots of colour to a garden.ULIS: thank you for your time abdul rahim, you’ve given me some good tips for my own garden!

االعتناء بها جيدًا حتى تستطيع النباتات النمو فيها.

توصي خاصة نباتات هناك هل ولكن قّيمة. مشورة إنها :ULISبزراعتها؟

اختيار مسألة هي اختيارها الناس يقرر التي النباتات إن عبدالرحيم: شخصي ولكنني أوصي بشيء يستمر طوياًل وقادرًا على البقاء ويحتاج

2. if you are new to gardening, use low maintenance plants and shrubbery 3. use ground cover plants, for an easy way to make a garden attractive

4. use low water plants to avoid a hike in your water bill5. use plants that are native or can survive in bahrain6. make sure you keep slugs and pests at bay with a special horticultural spray

7. if you are thinking of growing vegetables, make sure you grow them in season. getting the right results takes practice, so make sure you have patience!

8. Contact the landscaping team for recommendation of landscaping companies that can do the job for you!

what many don’t know is that this famous phenomenon plays a role in Bahrain’s heritage. Once an oasis of green vegetation, Bahrain fit the profile of the Garden of Eden and is known by many to be home to this sacred place of eternal paradise. This may indeed come as a surprise when considering its current sandier and drier environment. So, I delved deeper into Bahrain’s history and uncovered the age old moniker “the island of a million palms”, a name given to the Kingdom around 3,000 BC during the Dilmun era due its extensive green areas and an inordinate amount of natural palms. Such historically fertile plains mean that plants can still thrive here, with a little helping hand. Durrat Al Bahrain’s landscaping plan is a prime example. It goes a long way to recreating this natural paradise of times past, while incorporating cultural cues reminiscent of our ancient heritage in a sophisticated and modern way. But where did the idea for this exceptional masterplan first take seed?

The brainchild of Atkin’s premier architect, Tom wright, the aim with Durrat Al Bahrain was to develop an exceptional haven of escapism with an emphasis on community spirit. Drawing inspiration from another key thread of Bahrain’s cultural tapestry, the overall Durrat Al Bahrain master plan has been designed to represent a delicate necklace of pearls. Three underlying themes helped to bring together the concept, the first phases of which surround us today. Green oases and paradise landscapes intertwine around a central hub on each island. Carefully landscaped outdoor spaces have been vital, not only to seamlessly create this harmonious and serene environment, but also to achieve community interaction. Considering this, the plan dedicates 50%

of each Fayrooz and 30% of each Murjan Island to open public space, with a 1.5 km beach incorporated on each Murjan Island. It’s no wonder that Durrat Al Bahrain has earned itself the name of the ‘green necklace’ of Bahrain!

But public spaces are nothing without personality. Each plant, water feature or tree adds character and brings a space to life. The original selection of plants was the most challenging for landscape architects, largely due to the high level of salt water that can infiltrate the soil and affect the plants’ roots. To help reduce the risk of plant deterioration, plants indigenous to Bahrain have largely been used throughout. Although most are low water usage plants, Durrat Al Bahrain’s irrigation lake contains filtered sea water that feeds all public areas, saving at least 50% of the plant's daily water requirement. The landscaping team at Durrat Resort Management (DRM) maintains our public areas and ensures that they are continuously kept in top notch shape. Soon to be serviced by the Durrat Business Development (DBD) nursery, the largest of its kind in Bahrain, DRM ensures that our green spaces continue to flourish and thrive.

For those of us who have moved in during Phase I, we will have the luxury of seeing this vision of a natural paradise become a reality. Phase II is currently under construction while Phase III, which will complete the atolls, is currently in the detailed design stages. The first seeds have been sewn, the first trees have been planted, little by little Durrat Al Bahrain is becoming a contemporary, yet flourishing green idyll which will echo the geographical landscape of yesteryear.

Moving to Durrat Al Bahrain adds a new dimension to the idea of outdoor life and what better way to enjoy it then in your own garden? Expansion plans are afoot for the Nursery to incorporate a sales area and interactive workshop sessions, where residents can peruse, learn and purchase their own plants and shrubs. At the moment, the helpful team is happy to help with some advice when starting your own garden. I went to see what tips they could give me. Mazan Aridi of Rabaya Landscaping and Khalid himself were happy to help:

المزايا الصحية: مدر للبول ومساعد على الهضم ويساعد في عالج حاالت الروماتيزم ويخفض

ضغط الدم.

االستخدامات الغذائية:يستخدم مع الشوربات والسلطات واليخنة ولتزيين واألطباق.

الموسم: يجب زراعة البذور في أواخر فصل الشتاء تحت أشعة الشمس مباشرة. تجب زراعته في

الخارج بعد 6-8 أسابيع.

األعشاب الصحيةالمقـــــاديـــــر

ملعقة شاي واحدة من الخل، ملعقة شاي واحدة من الخل البسلمي،

ملح بحري،ملعقة طعام واحدة من زيت الزيتون بكر،

فلفل أسود مطحون طازجًا، 2 أونصة من أوراق البقدونس بدون

سيقان تغسل وتنشف جيدًا، 2 أونصة من الثوم الطازج يغسل ويجفف ويقطع جيدًا،

2 أونصة من الطرخون الطازج بدون سيقان يغسل وينشف جيدًا وتفصل أوراقه عن بعضها البعض،

2 أونصة من النعناع الطازج بدون سيقان يغسل وينشف جيدًا

وتفصل أوراقه عن بعضها البعض.

الطـــــريقـــــةفي وعاء واسع غير عميق، قم بخلط النوعية من الخل مع الملح. قم برش زيت الزيتون والفلفل. تذوق الخلطة وأضف جميع أوراق

األعشاب األخرى وقم بتحريكها بشكل متساٍو لكي تغطي األوراق الخضراء الخلطة. تذوق الخلطة مرة أخرى. ضع المحتويات في كميات

صغيرة مع الدجاج المشوي أو السمك المشوي أو المسلوق.

ابدأ حديقة مطبخك باألعشاب. ببساطة قطع البطاقات العشبية األربع. اوطيها عند المنتصف. أدخل عود خشبي أو إبرة غزل عبر كل واحدة من النهايات لكي يتم االحتفاظ بها بشكل مأمون في كل واحدة من األصص.
