Greetings to our global Senepol community as we close out the year 2017 and start 2018.
Last year was a very successful year. New membership is on the rise. More and more Senepol cattle are being registered at the SCBA. There is a sharp increase in communication with the SCBA from around the world as Senepol breeders realize the value that the SCBA has to offer.
We have been working hard to streamline the SCBA and make it a much easier and efficient associa-tion to do business with. By the time you read this letter, you should have already received our new online Whole Herd Reporting form. This new reporting program will make reporting much easier for our members while saving the SCBA administrative time.
Commercial breeders in the United States are realizing that they need heat tolerance in their herds, and they are increasingly making Senepol cattle their breed of choice for achieving this goal. Breed-ers around the world are using the Senepol breed in their cross-breeding programs to increase carcass merit, heterosis and heat tolerance.
There have been many discussions about how to implement a new program for qualifying Senepol cattle that have dropped out of the registry or have never been registered. We continue to explore several options to deal with these types of animals. However, I can not overstate that a DNA mark-er-based identification system offers unprecedented reliability to determine breed make-up. Use of this method will give the association complete confidence to not only properly identify Senepol influenced cattle, but also to accurately determine the true percentage of Senepol genetics for any in-dividual animal. The SCBA will be moving forward in developing a program that not only identifies these animals, but will also allow them to be registered and become part of our registered herd.
As some of you know, there have been some changes in the Association to improve the services to our members. Rebecca Powell is no longer with us. For those of you that are emailing her former ad-dress ([email protected]), know that they are being forwarded to the appropriate staff member. We are in the process of transferring responsibilities and restructuring the office to best assist our membership. Inquiries regarding data, including Whole Herd Reporting, database access, transfers, registrations, etc., should now be sent to [email protected]. We will respond to you from this address in a timely manner. All administrative business needs are still handled by Jessica Biel. She is in the office and can be reached at [email protected]. Jessica speaks Spanish and will be happy to help with translation and communication.
As I get older and I hope wiser and more tolerant, I have come to realize that I need to adapt if I am going to survive in this crazy world we live in and so does our association. Know that I am working on that. I do not think there is a better quote on this subject than this one of Charles Darwin’s: “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.”

El año pasado fue un año de mucho éxito para la Asociación. Nuestra membresía ha aumentado y ha crecido el registro de animales Senepol en la SCBA y en el mundo. Ha existido también un incremento en la comunicación entre la SCBA y criadores del mundo, quienes hoy se dan cuenta del valor que la SCBA puede ofrecer a sus asociados.
Hemos estado trabajando muy duro para optimizar a nuestra asociación, volverla más eficiente y atractiva para hacer negocios con ella. Adicionalmente y para cuando lean esta carta, ya deberían haber recibido nuestro nuevo formulario de registro de WHR en línea. Este programa en línea simplificará el registro de animales para nuestros miembros, ahorrando a la Asociación tiempos administrativos.
Los criadores comerciales se han dado cuenta que necesitan tolerancia al calor en sus rebaños y ellos han optado por Senepol como la raza de su elección para alcanzar esta meta. Los criadores de bos indicus están usando la raza (Senepol) en sus programas de cruzamiento para aumentar el tamaño de carcasa, heterosis y la tolerancia al calor.

2018 Senepol Cattle Breeders Association (SCBA)Whole-Herd Reporting (WHR) Rules and Regulations
effective January 1, 2018
Who can participate in WHR:• Every active SCBA member is eligible to participate in WHR. • Every registered cow (regardless of % Senepol is eligible to be enrolled).• If SCBA member chooses to participate in WHR, ALL registered females with any percentage Senepol blood must be in WHR. Partial selection of herd is not allowed. This reduces the accuracy of our performance information the same as if you only report a few of your best calves.• No one can register a calf born from a Percentage, Purebred, or Fullblood dam and get EPDs and performance information unless the entire herd is enrolled in WHR.• Your membership status in SCBA must be current to participate in WHR.
Enrollment of your females into WHR allows you at no additional charge to:• Submit and record all calf info (includes but not limited to the calf 's birth weight and date, weaning weight and date, yearling weight and date and carcass data) and to receive SCBA registration certificates on all calves naturally born the year of their dam's enrollment into WHR. This would also include twin calves and a cow calving twice in the same calendar year.• Calf information submitted and recorded after 24 months of age, a $5 additional fee will be payable at time of submission. • Transfer and issue SCBA certificate to any new owner of the calf born to the dam enrolled in WHR for that given year. A transfer can be made any one time in this calf ’s life at no additional charge.
Animals that are eligible for entry into WHR:• Females and bulls that are at least 18 months of age as of January 1 of the reporting year are eligible.• They can be Fullblood, Purebred, Composite, Percentage, Commercial or another breed. Females of non-Senepol ancestry (commercial or other breed) may be used to start a Senepol breed-up or Composite herd. This female must be enrolled in the SCBA by using the SCBA commercial enrollment form. Their offspring can then be enrolled in WHR.• Animals in our WHR system are designated as either Active, Idle or Disposed.• Active animals are charged an annual fee, and this gives them all of the benefits of WHR.• An idle cow or herd has either not been enrolled or the breeder has elected not to continue to participate in WHR. If a herd quits WHR for a minimum of one year, the herd is put on Idle herd status. Animals removed from WHR will be charged $50.00 per animal to be reinstated.• A cow marked “Disposed” cannot be reinstated. All non-Senepol (0% Senepol) cows that are inactive should be coded as “N” for inactive.
Additional Information
National Cattle Evaluations Expected Progeny Differences:• The SCBA calculates NCE EPDs once per year. All data received after July 15th cannot be guaranteed to receive NCE EPDs that year. If a breeder wants NCE EPDs, he must submit the data for his herd within this timetable.Payment plan for Active cows: The assessment fee may be divided into two equal payments due on January 31st and August 1st of that year.
First Year WHR 50% Discount: For those breeders who have never participated in WHR, we are offering a 50% discount. This discount is only eligible for first time WHR participants and is only available one time.
Leased Cattle: It is the responsibility of the lessee and the lessor as to who will enroll the cow on WHR. If neither enrolls her, she will become inactive, and the owner on record will be responsible to reinstate her.
Non-WHR Option: Idle herd breeders may pay the published registration and transfer fees to register calves. No performance or EPDs will be received.
Non-Senepol Cow: A non-Senepol cow must be enrolled in the SCBA by using the commercial enrollment form.
Retroactive Enrollment into WHR: A fee of $25 per year will be charged for each year you want to retroactively enroll a cow into WHR.
Bulls: Whole-Herd Enrollment fees do not apply to bulls. The bull inventory portion of WHR is for the benefit of keeping the database up to date. We appreciate your participation in this program.
Mid-Year Transfers of WHR Cows: If a breeder transfers a cow after the first half payment of WHR is paid, the breeder who originally enrolled the cow will be responsible for the second payment half.
Weaning, yearling and carcass data may be submitted and recorded at any time during the year, but there is a deadline of no later than July 15th for submitting data that you want included in the yearly NCE EPD calculations.

Whole Herd Reporting Please complete your Whole-Herd Enrollment Form by marking every cow in your herd with the appropriate code. The link for this online reporting form will be emailed to each SCBA breeder at the end of each calendar year and will also be available by requesting it from the SCBA office. Please add any females not reported on your WHR enrollment form. This may be cows purchased or leased, cows that were not listed last year or any female that has not been previously listed.
Adding Additional Calves:• To report additional cows that were not included on your report, send the female's registration number to the SCBA office and request that they be added to your WHR. You will then be invoiced accordingly.• If you plan to calve heifers this year that are less than 18 months old as of January 1st and they are not on your reporting form, you must request that the SCBA add them.• If a heifer has a calf during the year of reporting and was less than 18 months old on January 1st, and you did not add her to your WHR inventory, you may add her at the normal enrollment fee for the year that the calf was born. The addition of this heifer and the reporting of all of her progeny's performance information must be done no later than July 15th of the reporting year if you want her and her progeny included in the NCE EPD analysis for that year.
Official SCBA Disposal Codes for Whole Herd Reporting These codes indicate removal of animal from your inventory. Disposal codes will remain private. Only the individual herd has access. However, the codes may be used in a cumulative form to analyze data.Note: Using codes 11-31 means the female can never re-enter WHR (exception is 0% Senepol – i.e. commercial cows).

Quiénes pueden participar en WHR:• Todo socio activo de SCBA puede participar en WHR.• Toda res registrada (puede ser registrada sin importar el % de Senepol).• Si el socio SCBA decide participar en WHR, TODAS las hembras registradas con cualquier porcentaje de sangre Senepol deben estar en WHR. No se permite una selección parcial de la manada. The 2017 Senepol Sire Summary contains genetic values in the form of Ex-pected Progeny Differences (EPDs) that were computed as part of a multi-breed genetic evaluation program sponsored by the Senepol Cattle Breeders Association (SCBA). This National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) program pro-vides EPDs for all Senepol animals (males and females) in the breed that have a performance record or relatives (particularly progeny) with perfor-mance records. This Summary contains only bulls that have produced prog-eny or grand progeny with recorded performance. EPDs on other animals (cows and nonparents) must be obtained through the SCBA. The EPD is a prediction of how the future progeny of an animal will perform based on the animal’s own record, if available, a sample of existing progeny and/or information on all relatives. The purpose of the NCE program and this Sire Summary is to provide breeders and users of Senepol cattle the most current technology to aid in the selection of bulls, heifers and cows. The EPDs in this summary can be used to directly compare among Senepol bulls and cannot be used to directly compare Senepol bulls to bulls of another breed.

Traits EvaluatedExpected progeny differences were predicted for birth, 205-day weaning and 365-day yearling weight and for maternal milk. The EPDs can be used to compare animals in order to determine differences in genetic merit. For example, consider bull A and B with weaning weight EPDs of +20 and –10, respectively. The difference between the EPDs of the bulls (+20 minus –10 = 30) indicates that if bull A and bull B were bred to genetically similar cows and the resulting offspring were raised in the same environment, calves from bull A would be expected to have an average weaning weight that was 30 pounds heavier than the average weaning weight of calves from bull B. The EPDs for birth, weaning and yearling weight provide information on the genetic differences between animals in their ability to pass genes for growth directly to their offspring. The maternal milk EPD is expressed in pounds of weaning weight. The difference between maternal milk EPDs of two bulls provides information to predict differences in the weaning weights of the bulls’ maternal grand progeny due to the milk provided by the daughters of the two bulls. Again as example, consider two bulls that differ by 20 pounds
in their maternal milk EPDs. If these two bulls had equal weaning weight EPDs and were bred to cows with equal weaning weight and maternal milk EPDs, and the resulting daughters were bred to bulls with equal weaning weight EPDs, the difference between the average weaning weights of mater-nal grand calves from the two bulls would be expected to differ by 20 pounds due to the differences in genes for maternal ability (mainly milk) that the bulls passed to their daughters.

Carcass EPDs have also been predicted using carcass information provid-ed through the Senepol carcass sire progeny testing program. Measures of carcass traits were obtained via live animal ultrasound from steer and heifer progeny produced by steers participating in the program. The car-cass traits evaluated were external 12th-13th rib fat thickness and a cross section of the longissimus dorsi muscle (ribeye area) measured between the 12-13th ribs. Intramuscular fat % was also evaluated. All carcass traits were adjusted to an age constant basis (653 days).

Analysis ProceduresThe pedigree information and performance records on Senepol cattle that were provided by producers and sent to SCBA were analyzed using Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) procedures and multiple trait animal model technology. The analysis procedures develop and EPD for each ani-mal based on its own record, ancestors in the animal’s pedigree (particularly the animal’s sire and dam) and any progeny information that is available. If progeny are available, the superiority of inferiority of the animal’s mates are considered in the analysis procedures. Thus, in the case of a sire, the genetic merit of the dams he was mated with is accounted for in the analysis. This reduces, if not totally eliminates, the problem of assortative mating of sires and dams. Genetic relationships among all animals were used to provide more information on each animal and to account for genetic trend, which provides a more accurate analysis for young bulls and heifers. An important aspect of the NCE program is the use of a multiple trait animal model that analyzed birth weight, 205-day weaning weight and 160-day postweaning simultaneously. Multiple trait models use the genetic relationships among the traits to enhance the accuracy of prediction. Use of the three trait model helps to correct any bias that can be caused by the loss of records between weaning and yearling due to culling at weaning and helps to correct poten-tial bias in the birth weight EPD due to possible mistakes or inaccuracies in the reporting of birth weights. Basically, the genetic relationships between the three traits help to provide information that can be used to adjust the EPDs for those traits that have missing or misreported information. Al-though post-weaning gain is the trait incorporated into the genetic evalua-tion procedures, yearling weight EPDs were formed by combining weaning weight and post-weaning gain EPDs predicted in the analysis.

Accuracy of the EPDThe reliability of the EPDs is reflected in the accuracy value. Accuracy values
range from 0 to 1, with values closer to 1 being more accurate. The accuracy is a reflection of the distribution and number of progeny of an animal, the amount of pedigree information available and the number of performance records on the animal. The higher the accuracy, the smaller the amount of possible change in the EPD would be expected with the addition of new information. The procedures used in the SCBA National Evaluation Pro-gram adjust the EPD of an animal based on the number of progeny, the heritability of the trait, available male and female relatives, the mates of the animal and the animal’s own record. Therefore, all animals can be directly compared even though there are differences in accuracy. Breeders should use the EPDs to decide whether a bull is to be selected for use in their breed-ing program and then use the accuracy value to determine how extensively to use the bull.

Contemporary GroupsThe effects of contemporary groups are adjusted for in the analyses proce-dure. This results in the EPDs being computed as though all animals were in one large contemporary group. This is the reason the EPDs can be compared across herds. The proper identification of the contemporary in which an animal is raised is of the utmost importance for an accurate evaluation of the animal and its parents. Breeders should be aware of the definition of a contemporary group: 1) animals of the same sex, 2) animals of similar age (try to keep animals within 90 day birth date spread) and 3) animals man-aged together and given equal opportunity to perform (i.e., same pasture, same feed, same weigh dates, similar breed makeup, etc.). Producers need to send to SCBA complete information on the management of their cattle so that contemporary groups can be properly assigned. Most inaccuracies inNCE programs are due to misidentification of contemporary groups.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) may be used to estimate how future progeny of an animal will compare to progeny of other animals within the breed. EPDs are not designed to predict the performance of one or two progeny by a sire, but rather should be used to compare bulls based on esti-mated progeny performance. EPDs predict differences, not absolutes. EPDs describe the genetic value of an animal much like a feed tag describes the contents of a feed sack. EPDs are computed as part of the SCBA National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) program. The NCE program represents the appli-cation of the most recent genetic and computing technology for calculating EPDs for beef cattle. The Senepol NCE program incorporates all available
performance into the prediction of an individual’s EPD for a specific trait. An EPD may be based on any combination of individual performance, ped-igree and progeny performance information. In addition, EPDs are more accurate than anything previously available because they account for the following factors:• Genetic value of cows to which a bull is bred.• Environmental differences affecting contemporary groups.• Genetic values of other parents in the contemporary group.• Genetic trend.

Accuracy (ACC) is an expression of reliability of the EPD and may range from 0to 1. As accuracy approaches 1.0, the EPD is more reliable and can be expected to change less in the future. Accuracy may be categorized into low, medium and high reliability as fol-lows. Low: 0.0 to .25; Medium: .25 to .50; High: .50 to 1.0. EPDs should be used to decide which bulls are selected while accuracy values suggest how extensively the bulls should be used. Bulls with favorable EPD values and corresponding high accuracy values can be used with confidence that they will contribute favorably to the herd. Accuracy is an abbreviated method of expressing the reliability of an EPD. Another more specific indicator is the standard error of prediction (possible change). Changes in EPDs can be expected to fall within the possible change range 67 percent of the time. Shown is a table showing the possible change at different levels of accuracy for each trait.As accuracy increases, the possible change decreases. For example, if the ac-curacy of a bull’s Weaning Weight EPD is .30, the expected possible change in EPD is ± 12 lb. (for example a bull with a Weaning Weight EPD of +10 lb., the potential range in EPD = -2 to +22 lb.). If the Weaning Weight EPD ac-curacy is.70, the possible change in EPD decreases to ± 5 lb. (for a bull with a Weaning Weight EPD of +10 lb., the possible range in EPD = +5 to +15 lb.).

Maternal Milk and Growth reflect what the bull is expected to transmit to their daughters through weaning and milking ability. The EPD is equal to half the weaning weight EPD plus total EPD milk. 8. Confidence Range
The Confidence Range indicates the range in values for which the “true” EPD should probably lie. For most animals, one can be fairly (but not en-tirely) confident that an EPD should be within this range in subsequent ge-netic analyses. The Confidence Range is equal to the EPD plus or minus thepossible change value. The birth weight EPD Confidence Range is –2.2 to 0.4 lb., which is -0.9 ± 1.3 lb. (-0.9 minus 1.3 = -2.2 and -0.9 plus 1.3 = 0.4). The possible change value of 1.3 lb. associated with a birth accuracy of .61 can be interpolated from the Possible Change table above.

An animal’s genetics, as well as environmental effects, make up its phenotype.

Also on the following page are Percentile Breakdown tables. Information is given for all Senepol active sires, active dams and calves born in 2015 These tables can be utilized to compare an individual to the total Senepol population. For example, you want to know how your cow, with a 13.0 lb. Milk EPD, stands in the Senepol breed. You will find from the Active Dam Percentile Breakdown table that a cow with a 13% lb. Milk EPD is at the 5% level. There are 5% of the active Senepol cows with a higher Milk EPD. In other words, she is higher than 95% of all Senepol cows. Similar compari-sons can be made with sires or calves.

About Genetic Trait Leaders

A Genetic Trait Leader is a bull that exhibits genetic superiority in at least one of five individual traits as reported in the Senepol Sire Summary. There is also a Multiple Trait Performance Sire award that recognizes sires that ex-hibit superiority in combined traits. Genetic superiority may be defined by a particular bull’s EPDs as reported in the Senepol Sire Summary and how they are superior to the rest of the bulls evaluated for a given trait.
Single-Trait Trait Leaders must have an EPD that ranks him in the top 10%of all sires listed in the sire summary and a minimum accuracy of .50 for thatparticular trait.
Multiple-Trait Performance sires are those sires that ranked in the top 1/3of the bulls listed in the Sire Summary for Weaning Weight EPD, Milk EPD,Milk & Growth EPD and Yearling Weight EPD as well as having minimumaccuracies of .30 for all traits. In addition, these sires must rank in the top 2/3 of all bulls listed in the Sire Summary for Birth Weight EPD with a min-imum accuracy of .30.
Only Active sires are included on the Genetic Trait Leader List. Inactive siresare those that have not sired a recorded calf since January 1, 2013 and have aminimum Weaning Weight Accuracy of .40. Active sires have produced a calf since January 1, 2011 and have a minimum Weaning Weight Accuracy of .30.

The following EPDs for twenty-five (25) bulls represent the second genetic analysis for carcass traits in the Senepol breed.
The higher accuracy sire Carcass EPDs have been predicted using carcass information provided through the designed Senepol carcass sire progeny testing program. This program was conducted in Paraguay and Brazil. Mea-sures of carcass traits were obtained via live animal ultrasound from steer and heifer progeny produced by both participating in the program. The car-cass traits evaluated were external 12th-13th rib fat thickness and a cross section of the longissimus dorsi muscle (ribeye area) measured between the 12-13th ribs. Intramuscular fat % was also evaluated. All carcass traits were adjusted to an age constant basis, 653 days, which is the average age of all cattle in the analysis.
Since the Senepol carcass EPDs care based on live animal ultrasound mea-surements, this is not a direct prediction of actual finished steer measure-ments from a packing plant. Nevertheless, ultrasound is an extremely good predictor of carcass composition of the cattle measured. Several research projects have shown a very favorable relationship between predictions based on ultrasound and those based on actual packing plant steer measurements.
The units of measurement for Fat Thickness EPDs is inches, while Ribeye Area.
EPDs are measured in square inches. Intramuscular Fat EPDs are measured in units of percent fat within the ribeye muscle. Carcass EPD Sires are those that qualify as an Active Sire in this sire summary and in addition have a minimum IMF accuracy of .30.
2016 Senepol Carcass EPDs - DEPs Senepol en Carcasa 2016
