Introduction of the material: This is a passage about the Earth Summit in Johannesburg 2002 and explains some of the issues and problems discussed at the meeting. The Ss are given examples of major environmental problems and their impact on life and our planet. The reading also discusses the importance of meetings like the Earth Summit and people’s reactions to them. After the reading, the students are asked to reflect upon the issues raised in the reading and discuss their relevance and importance.
Teaching aims:1. Enable the Ss to make an outline of the text
and know the Earth Summit is important.2. Draw the Ss’ attention to major environmental
problems and their solutions and deepen the Ss’ consciousness in protecting the natural environment.3. Improve the students’ reading comprehensive
ability through different kinds of reading activities. 4. Use what they learn to do some language
activities (some tasks).Important points:1. Enable the Ss to make an outline of the text and
know the Earth Summit is important. (Teaching aim 1.)

The Earth Summit----- a meeting held by the United Nations to discuss environmental issues. The first Earth Summit was held in Stockholm, capital of Sweden, to exchange ideas on how to protect the earth. Since 1972 to 2002, it has altogether been held 21 times,each with a theme:
