Dear Mr.Staab
I have heard many excellent things about The Observer from teachers and students alike and I would love to be given the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful staff. I love journalism and plan on pursuing it as a career and the first step to doing that is by becoming part of a newspaper staff that will help prepare me and help me gain expe-rience for the future and I belief The Observer is that paper.
As the Editor-in-Chief of my yearbook for 2 years I have learned a lot. I have learned strong feature writing skills and photography skills. I have learned how to meet deadlines on time and work under pressure. But most im-portantly I have learned to work well with every person on a staff and I take instruction very well. I will always be the first to volunteer for any extra assignments. And on my yearbook staff I have learned how to use InDesign and Photo-shop very well.
Other than journalism I enjoy writing short stories, snowboarding and I am a black belt in karate. I do not have very many activities that will take away from my journalism duties and I am very committed to everything I do. I have given almost every hour of my days to yearbook the last 3 years; I have stayed at school till 8 o’clock some nights. I have given up a lot of my high school life for my yearbook, I have missed football games and parties and even dances but I would not trade my yearbook for anything. Journalism is my life.
I belief I would be a great addition to you staff, I would greatly appreciate you giving me a chance to prove how committed I could be. I am a fast learner and will do anything you need done, from getting coffee to writing a front page store, I can do it all.
Respectfully yours,
Shannon Mahoney

“Everyday is a happy day
here at Eisenhower”-Mr. Walter
It is 2012 and all over the world people are afraid the world is going to END. Here at IKE we know if the world does end we are proud to be a Cadet TILL THE END. When your a Cadet your a Cadet for life. At IKE People don’t just graduate and never think about their time here at Eisenhower again, they always have a piece of it with them. Weather that pice is material like a year-book or letter mans jacket or a great memory. Eisenhower will always be a part of their past. Even when they are old and gray if they hear something about the Cadets playing the Pirates you can bet a part of them will go back to their high school self and think “I hope IKE destroys them.” Although soon there will be a new school and former graduates may not recognize the building that they learned to love and learned to live it will not change there cadet pride. There are moments for all of us we will never for-get weather it is standing on a field before a performance, in front of a sellout crowd or looking beyond the curtain to a packed theater before a performance. It may even just be that one teacher who inspired you to do your best and made your day a little better. Most will remember the friends they had and got to have those experiences with but the one thing they know is our day, your class and this experience will last forever in this book.
Ms. Lock enthusiastically runs around giving high fives to the students and IKE fans cheering in the bleachers before our big Round up game.

2012! Will the world end? Is this it? Do we say goodbye? Well, no. It’s very unlikely. Remember back in 1999 when scientists said the world would end with the new year 2000? That day came, scientists got excited, and once the clock struck midnight, they ducked. And for what? Nothing. The world didn’t end! We are still here. Time went on and something similar is coming upon us again. According to the Mayan calender, 2012 was the last year of the earth as we know it. Many scien-tists now believe that the Mayans didn’t mean to imply the world would end. The National Geographic Channel said, “No Mayan text, colonial, or modern ever predicted the end of time.” Has anyone heard of the movie “2012” This movie

Explained what people thought might happen to the world. This movie never said it would happen, it said, “what if?” Hollywood made movies like this because of people’s interests and sales at the ticket booth. Just like how when people really were into zombies or vampires, there were a large amount of that kind of movies because they knew they would sell tickets. Many people had questions and www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html provided some answers. Question (Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012. Answer (A): Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years.
Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012? A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened, the doomsday date was moved forward to 2012. Q: Could an phenomena occur where planets align in a way that impacts Earth? A: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy, but that is an annual event.

This was the class that made the yearbook possible. Although it was a “class” during the school day like any other the students had to do much more than just show up for an hour everyday. Writing stores, taking pictures and doing interviews, this class took a lot of time and skills. The students learned how the journalism world worked by making edits and dead lined. They learned how to properly write stories, do layout for page and much more. The students in this class were dedicated to their work. They spent hours after school working to make the best book they could. The yearbook staff always knew what was going on. “We are the central intelligence of the school,” said Wendy Violette. Students were seen at school events with cameras in their hands, trying to catch the best picture. “If you want to be involved in your school this is the class for you. You are at every event taking pictures and interviewing people,” said Editor Shannon Mahoney. Along with making the yearbook this class did many other things. They made popcorn and candy necklaces and sold yearbooks at Round Up, they put the spring Tolo “Candy Land” together and they took pictures for the Stop Light dance. Although this yearbook class was a lot of work it was a lot of fun too. Students didn’t just work all day. They had plenty of breaks and fun. “It’s the most fun class of the day” said Bryce Sargent. After every deadline the class had a movie and pizza party. On April 5 students traveled to Seattle for the National JEA Conference where they entered competitions and at-tended inspiring seminars. Jasmine Galvan was awarded an Honorable Mention for Feature Writing: a great start to the first national com-petition.

Candy Land was this year’s Tolo theme. The dance was put on by the yearbook and newspaper staff.
