of the body, as well as mentally stimulating programs.

Why Am I Getting a Paper Version
of the Newsletter?
Many of you have opted to receive the newsletter
via e-mail, and we are grateful. It saves us money!
We have decided, however, that the "Registration
Issue" of the newsletter should be delivered by
postal mail. The main reason for this decision is
that it would be too complicated to conduct
registration processing via electronic means.
Additionally, there is a fairness issue. Email
recipients would have to print out the registration
forms, whereas postal mail recipients would not
have to print out the forms.
We are not abandoning the e-mail option, and we
want to encourage you to participate. We are,
however, temporarily suspending the option for this
issue. (It is very likely that we will continue this
policy for all future "Registration Issues" of the
newsletter).
Thanks for your understanding!

SRC Bike Rides
The SRC bike program has had a
great start in 2013. Our first ride
was in late March with
temperatures in the 40's followed
by six other rides, with our latest
one in mid-July with
temperatures in the 90's. We
covered a lot of ground, with three rides along the
C&O Towpath, the Capital Crescent Trail from
Bethesda to Georgetown, the Western Maryland
Rail Trail in Hancock and two local rides in
Frederick and Walkersville.
Our total miles covered, to date is about 120 for an
average of 17 miles per trip. We had a total of 86
participants including 12 "first timers". Oh yes, we
have also enjoyed seven different restaurants in
our travels.
The riding program will continue, twice a month,
through October and into November — weather
permitting. We have many more trails to explore
and will cover parts of the Gettysburg Battlefield,
a towpath ride in the Great Falls area, a W&OD
ride out to Purcellville, our annual trip out to
Mount Vernon and several others to be decided on
by the "Usual Suspects" — the regular participants
on our rides.
We look forward in having others join us. We ride
at a pace where we can enjoy the surrounding
scenery and each other’s company. All that is
required is a bicycle in good working condition, a
helmet and the ability to have fun! Any questions,
please call or e-mail me.
SRC History Trip
Tuesday, October 22, 2013
On Tuesday, October 22, 2013, we will meet
behind the Sandy Spring Bank on the Golden Mile
at 9 am to carpool to Antietam Battlefield. This is
not a battlefield tour but rather a tour to various
original properties still located there. A Park
Ranger will be our guide.
This tour will last about 2 hours after which we
will have lunch at Red Byrd Restaurant and ice
cream in Boonsboro. We will order our lunch
individually from the house menu.
Participants should carry their federal Golden Age
pass in case we need them.
Our return to Frederick should be between 3-4 pm.
Fall-Time Duckpin Bowling
Head out to Walkersville and drive by the
Frederick County’s expansive corn fields with the
Catoctin mountains in the distance. When you get
to 44 West Pennsylvania Avenue, pull over and
STOP! — for a little bowling at Walkersville’s
own DUCKPIN lanes! On Thursday afternoons
from 1 to 3 pm there are all kinds of folks enjoying
themselves. Some of us are new to the game,
others who’ve been at it for a while; some pretty
good, but most of us still learning (it takes a
while!).
Bowl as much as you like: just $2.50 per game.
No charge for shoe rental. Some folks bowl two
games— some three. There is plenty of parking
around the building and an eatery inside if you
missed lunch or might like a snack.
