Living Well with DiabetesTriHealth Resources Help Make It HappenNo bread? No potatoes? No chocolate? Sorting out fact from fiction about what you can

or can’t eat if you have diabetes can be frustrating and overwhelming.

“There’s no need to give up the foods you love,” says Dianne Schneider, RD, LD, CDE,

TriHealth outpatient dietitian and diabetes educator. “You can incorporate your favorite

foods into a healthy eating plan.”

This is just one of many useful guidelines offered in TriHealth’s Diabetes Self-Management

Education Program, which helps break down information into manageable pieces. As one

participant said, “This education has taken the fear out of being diagnosed.”

The program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association and includes a one-hour

individual assessment and four two-hour classes. It is covered by Medicare (80 percent)

and most insurance companies. Instruction includes self-monitoring of blood glucose,

diet, exercise and motivation to use self-management skills.

“There’s a synergy in the group setting,” Schneider says. “People learn from each other

and see that they’re not the only one with this issue.”

Registered dietitians/diabetes educators present the program at Bethesda North and

Good Samaritan hospitals to people who are newly diagnosed and those who want a

refresher or additional education.

Schneider says, “This is a road map to healthier living, taking you step by step without

being overwhelming. For people who persevere, we’ve had wonderful results.”

Certified diabetes educators also offer individual diabetes counseling sessions. A 90-minute

Pre-Diabetes Class helps people with abnormal blood sugars focus on lifestyle changes.

In addition, a Diabetes Support Group is offered free to the public on the second Tuesday

of the month from 7:30 to 9 p.m. (excluding June, July, August and December), at

TriHealth Fitness & Health Pavilion, 6200 Pfeiffer Road at I-71.

Call 513 865 1126 (Bethesda North) or 513 862 2879 (Good Samaritan) for information,

registration or an appointment. For more, visit TriHealth.com and type “Diabetes

Education Classes” in the search bar.

1. Take Control and Understand What Diabetes Is!

This class will teach you where diabetes comes from and why it happens. Knowledge is power. Knowing why what you eat, drink, and do with your body really can change how you feel and how healthy you can live. Find out how to take back your life. Don’t let a chronic condition run you into the ground.

Nathanael Greene Lodge Friday, April 8 10–11 a.m.

Bethesda North Hospital Friday, April 15 10–11 a.m.

2. The Magic of Movement No one wants to hear about “exercise”! It’s almost a dirty word. But exercise can make the difference in whether you have control or your blood sugar runs amok. Activity is the key, not weight-lifting. Walking at the mall, getting out with friends for a stroll, housecleaning, playing with the grandchildren or the dog—it’s all activity. Come learn from our experts just how physical activity affects the body, and therefore, affects your diabetes/pre-diabetes.

Nathanael Green Lodge Tuesday, April 26 10–11 a.m.

Bethesda North Hospital Tuesday, May 3 10–11 a.m.

3. Oh, I’ll Just Take a Pill! Popping a pill is not how it works! Medications for diabetes work in different ways, by different mechanisms, and on different body systems. All pills ingested through the stomach spread throughout your whole body. Fully understanding the medication you take for diabetes is important. What are the differences in one that boosts your insulin production, another that increases the strength of the insulin you produce, or yet another that is replacement insulin? How do they work and affect your body? Learn about drugs that are savings lives as well as limbs, toes, fingers and eyesight by helping control blood sugar.

Focus On…Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes Ever heard of having “A touch of the sugar,” or heard someone say, “I don’t have to worry about my diet, I’ll just take

more insulin”? Have you been told your blood sugar numbers are up? Has your doctor mentioned pre-diabetes to you?

We all need glucose to live. It feeds our cells. What happens when you can’t use the glucose that comes in the food

you eat? Diabetes is a disease and it is spreading like wildfire, no one is immune. Come find out how you can fight this

off for years to come! Maybe forever!

Reservations for ALL “Focus on” classes listed below must be made by calling 513 569 6400 or by registering online at TriHealthSeniorsHealth.com

Nathanael Greene Lodge Tuesday, May 17 10–11 a.m.

Bethesda North Hospital (note time change)Thursday, May 19 10:30–11:30 a.m.

4. Chronic Conditions and the DoctorDon’t feel well? Now what do I do? Do I exercise or not? Do I take my daily medication or not? What if I am vomiting? Did the pills come back up? Can I take another dose? How do you manage a sick day with a chronic condition? We will also cover some questions you should ask, and things you should tell your doctor and your specialists—like ensuring every doctor knows all your medications and any over-the-counter herbal supplements, vitamins, etc. that you take. Chronic conditions are diseases that most likely cannot be cured, but often can be controlled.

Bethesda North Hospital Tuesday May 31 10–11 a.m.

Nathanael Green Lodge Wednesday, June 1 10–11 a.m.

5. Lunch and Learn— Life in the Drive-Through Lane

Let’s face it; we all love to go out to eat and we have all used the drive-thru window. Sometimes it’s a treat, sometimes it’s because we’re in a hurry. Fast food is a fact of life. But there are healthier choices out there! Come learn how to read a menu, what to order and how to order it. You will be surprised at what you will learn. This will also be a great thing to be able to teach your grandchildren, who are growing up saying “super-size it!”

Nathanael Greene Lodge Wednesday, June 15 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Bethesda North Hospital Thursday, June 16 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

COST: $15 or FREE for Pathway to Wellness participants who attend 3 of the first 4 Focus classes.

TriHealth Women’s Center in Kenwood offers comprehensive services for women over 40—under one roof.

Women in their 40s and older have different health care needs than women of childbearing age. Perimenopausal and menopausal women, for example, experience symptoms that often are not taken seriously or properly treated—weight gain, sleep problems, mood changes. And while post-menopausal women are no longer concerned about pregnancy, they are at increased risk for breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

TriHealth understands that this group of women has special needs, and a few years ago decided to address those needs in a new way. That vision is now a reality at TriHealth Women’s Center in Kenwood—the only

facility in the Cincinnati area to bring together under one roof all of the medical and wellness services that women over 40 need. These services are combined with a holistic approach to care to help women in this age group live healthier, more satisfying lives.

“It’s more than just a place for women’s care,” says Dr. Paula Lafranconi, Medical Director. “The Women’s Center is a destination that takes women’s health to a new level. It is a place where we can encourage women to be more proactive in their own health care and work with them on their health through wellness education. We are all very excited.”

What your doctor wishes you knew!

Getting the best care from your doctor requires some real preparation for the short 15 to 20 minutes of a typical office visit. Both doctors and patients put high value on courtesy and professionalism but doctors often state that patients are not taking full advantage of strategies that are very helpful, such as taking notes during the visit. One doctor says, “A primary care doctor should be your partner in overall health, not just someone you go to for a minor problem or a referral to a specialist.” Not following your doctor’s advice or treatment was the number-one complaint doctors had about their patients. But following that advice can be a lot more complicated today. It’s not just about taking a pill. Cost, time, side effects, and understanding the advice often plays a large role in patients not doing what the doctor recommends. Feel free to discuss or even debate your treatment plan while still in the office. Then do your best to comply. If you are then having side effects, recurring symptoms, unsure if you’re following instructions correctly, or experiencing new symptoms, tell your doctor immediately.

Here are some patient-friendly things to expect from your doctor’s practice:

Can I get an urgent appointment within 24 hours? If not, where should I go?

Can I reach someone in the practice by phone at night or on weekends? If not, what do I do? If yes, will I be charged?

Can I get test results quickly via e-mail, telephone or on-line?

If I have a chronic condition, what is your plan

for tracking how I am doing?

Does this practice include non-MD staff such as nutritionists or nurse practitioners to help me manage my medications and chronic condition?

How can I schedule time with them?

Take responsibility for your own health. You are in charge!
