Jubilee Year
of Mercy
Today’s Gospel graces us with a beautiful prayer that can make every day of our lives a jubilee of mercy: “O God, be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13). Religious Israelites despised the tax collector who prayed
it, for collaborating with Gentile occupiers and handling currency that bore the “divine” emperor’s graven image. But the Pharisee’s long-winded self-congratulation, mixed with self-righteous condemnation, was no “prayer” at all. “The Pharisee….spoke this prayer to himself” (18:11, emphasis added). Praying the tax collector’s simple, sincere, succinct cry for mercy acknowledges our own sinfulness, and “welcomes” other sinners as brothers and sisters with whom we can identify, even empathize, echoing Pope Francis’ famous comment about not being the one to judge. Indeed, the tax collector “went home justified” (18:14), that is, restored to God’s friendship, for God’s mercy is not prize achieved but gift received. “Let your prayer be brief: for tax collector, prodigal son, and dying thief were all reconciled to God by a single phrase!” (Saint John Climacus, 7th century).

We will NOT be SILENT about
the Silent Auction
The Silent Auction during the Christmas Bazaar promises to be extraordinary based on the donations folks have made. For example, a very special tour at Ashford Stud, one of Kentucky's premier thorough-bred horse farms. Your host will be none other than American Pharaoh, the Triple Crown winner who has said he will post himself so that you and your nine closest friends, both as a
group and individually can be photographed with him. He has made one require- ment; he will not put his horseshoe on the photo.

Praying as a Family
Ss. Peter and Paul Parish Day Retreat November 5, 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM
Are you interested in discovering how to deepen your prayer relationship and that of your children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews? If so, sign up for our parish retreat. The Dominican sisters of Saint Cecilia (Nashville, TN) will offer inspiring and practical suggestions for fostering a culture within your home where children can ‘catch the faith’ and have a good time doing it! The sisters’ presentation draws from the lives of the saints, the experience of other families, and current research which identifies successful ways for handing on the faith to children and teens. It also identifies the unique challenges and obstacles facing this endeavor. Bring the children for their own catechesis on prayer. Sessions will be divided according to age groups. Babysitting will be available for walking toddlers up to 4 years old (Volunteers are needed to help in the nursery.). Lunch and snacks provided.
Thanks to some generous donations, there will be no charge!
To RSVP, contact Mary Vonderbrink [email protected] or 859-236-2111 ext. 102.
FUNERAL PLANNING
If anyone is interested in planning your own funeral, please notify the church office (859-734-4270) or Pat Logsdon (859-748-6166).
We will have a workshop and follow the “Catholic Funeral” guidelines. You can pick your readings and music and consider any special things you might want in your “end of life” celebration!
A copy of this plan will go on file in the parish office. When your time comes to walk happily to Jesus, your family will be able to concentrate on your love and memory and not on the mechanics of your funeral! This is a truly generous gift for each of us to give our families! We will schedule sessions that suit each of you. Be sure to tell us your best day or your best time of day.
God bless each of you! Pat Logsdon
St. Andrew Catholic Church Week of October 23 - October 29, 2016 5
We are asking everyone in the parish to join together and contribute to a successful Christmas Bazaar. Please plan to craft an item, make some ornaments, and/or put together a theme basket. These can be made at home individually, as a family, or get together in small groups. Then bring in your donations. We need them soon!
There will be forms in the foyer for you to sign up for baskets. We will be happy to offer theme ideas. Also, we will be available to assist you if you gather your items and need help putting the basket together. We are in need of handmade ornaments, wreaths, and donations for the silent auction.
We will also be doing a children’s table where items will be available for children to purchase gifts for their parents and siblings. Contributions for this table would be greatly appreciated.
Contacts: Warren Jackson 859-247-0673 Pat Isaman 859-748-5433 Darlene Holt 859-325-1655
We will also need volunteers for the Bazaar itself as well as workers for the Luncheon.

The Silent Auction during the Christmas Bazaar promises to be extraordinary based on the donations folks have made. For example, you can bid on having your own use, with 20 of your friends, of the caboose of the train that goes from New Haven, Kentucky to Boston, Kentucky and back. The rolling Kentucky countryside passes by as you and your friends participate in this pleasure once only enjoyed by the rich and powerful.
