SENSIBLE development road addresses EU energy policy drivers & challenges

To 2020• Reduce GHG by 20%• Increase RES by 20%• Increase Energy Eficiency by 20%

To 2030• Reduce GHG by 40%• Increase RES by 27%• Increase Energy Eficiency by 27%

To 2050• Reduce GHG by 80-95%

• “(…) We want secure energy supplies to ensure the reliable provision of energy whenever and wherever it is needed (…)”

• “(…)We want to ensure that energy providers operate in a competitive environment that ensures affordable prices for homes, businesses, and industries (…)”

• “(…)We want our energy consumption to be sustainable, through the lowering of greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, and fossil fuel dependence(…)”

EU Energy Policy High level objectives1

In detail• SENSIBLE overall objective is to develop, demonstrate and evaluate a

storage-enabled sustainable energy distributed supply and energymanagement for grids, buildings and communities.

• To demonstrate the intelligent integration of a wide range of available small-scale storage technologies:

• electro-chemical storage devices (batteries),

• electrostatic devices (supercaps)

• thermal storage devices (heat/cold storage and building inertia)

• To demonstrate the cost-optimized, coordinated use of different forms of energy in the operation of heating, cooling and CHP devices and local renewables – in conjunction with the afore-mentioned small-scale storage technologies;

• To demonstrate novel service platforms, services and business models that will generate additional revenue for the operation of local storage devices and will help overcome existing regulatory barriers;

EU Energy Policy drivers/objectives breakdown

SENSIBLE main objectives

To demonstrate that at least the EU 2030 targets can be achieved on a local level by the intelligent integration of existing small-scale storage technologies into the local power distribution grid as well as into houses and commercial/industrial buildings;

Quick wins and lessons already learned and during first 2,5 years of this project

Lessons learned• Ambitious and real implementation R&D projects need a laboratory space to

test developments and integration before going to site;

• An R&D project like SENSIBLE requests a fully available team for the project working on it daily;

• Even in a 4 year long project, it is critical to start working on it since day one;

• Quickly solve your predictable issues to be mind available for the unpredictableones;

• Bring the right partners with common commitment because you will need them for sure in critical situations;

• Since the first day, critical decisions must be align with core BU.

Quick wins• EDP NEW R&D is now ready to actively lead/contribute innovation projects in

storage and smart grids area, specifying testing and validating advanced storageand smartgrid applications;

• EDP Labelec has today additional testing capabilities in smartgrids,smarthomes and storage areas;

• Know-how acquired is available and to be shared/spread to other EDP Businessunits.

23

Page 24: SENSIBLE - Storage-Enabled Sustainable Energy for ......SENSIBLE –Storage-Enabled Sustainable Energy for Buildings and Communities H2020 Call LCE-08-2015 - Grant Agreement No 645963

SENSIBLE was the first BIG R&D project for Labelec/NEW R&D and the embryo for upcoming challenges in the development of the electrical system

Conclusion• SENSIBLE is an ambitious project-real demonstration on field

and represents an opportunity to grow

• SENSIBLE has a wide scope of application where political and regulatory aspects are also a challenge

• In Évora demonstrator EDP keeps developing Inovgrid project as well as developing the electrical system of the future

Next steps• Évora demonstrator is now ready to be in fully operation

• Évora demonstrator will live after SENSIBLE

• Évora/Valverde scope represents a worldwide top tier demonstrator which must be leverage by other projects

• DOMINOES project and INTEGRID will further develop SENSIBLE demonstrator as it is today

• There are also several H2020 upcoming opportunities under analysis which can further develop the concepts designed in SENSIBLE through the electrical system of the future!

Next H2020 opportunities related to Grid management and Energy Services to Costumers
