We introduce...SensSilage® – a wireless sensor system for surveillance via the Internet of silage in stock.

SensSilage® has been developed to satisfy the market’s increasing needs for quality assurance, own quality control and stock management of biological materials. The product provides not only control, but also security, so its quality and safety must be second to none.

There is good economy in surveillance of silage in stock, where a loss of 10% represents more than 2,000 € for a 500 m³ stock. The average loss is estimated to be 5-10%, but many farmers experience much higher losses in some years.

SensSilage® is manufactured and sold by WEBStech ApS. On the following pages you will find more information about SensSilage®, design, concept, use, and much more.

Enjoy!

Best wishes

This is how SensSilage® worksSensSilage® consists of a number of red sensor units, which are placed in the silage stock by the farmer. The sensor system allows access to an Internet portal, where the farmer is able to survey the condition of his stock, as well as further analyze the data acquired.

The sensors are placed in the top layer of the silage when making the grass or other roughage stack, or at the time of pressing wrapped bales (1).

The sensors remain in the silage throughout the whole ensiling process. Data concerning the physical and chemical conditions of the silage are transmitted to a server (2 and 3), making it possible for the farmer to access his data and obtain information about the quality of the silage – any-time, anywhere – as well as receive alarms via e-mail and text messages (4).

When the silage is fed to the cows, the sensors follow the silage through the feed mixer and right to the feeding table, where the farmer can collect them. The sensors are too large to be eaten by the cows!

Silage is stored under plastic/tarpaulin. The sensor units are placed in the top layer, three meters apart.

The sensors measure changes in tem-perature and thereby oxygen content in the silage and transmit the data to a GSM mast in the area.

Advantages of SensSilage®The advantages of wireless sensors and information tech-nology are that they make it possible to secure a product’s traceability, quality and food safety.

The result is thus an improved production system for hand-ling of biological materials in agricultural production and the food sector.

The electronic circuit board in the sensor unit includes a computer processor, a battery, a communication module (radio and antenna) as well as relevant measuring devices – in the case of SensSilage® a temperature sensor.

The cabinet is designed to protect the circuit board against physical stress, whereas the circuit board supplies the basis for measurement of the relevant conditions.

The farmer receives information on his computer or mobile phone.

Data are transferred to a server.

The system makes it possible to measure, continuously and online, a number of physical and chemical conditions in the silage stock, making available important information re-garding the quality of the silage. With the present technolo-gy, this has not been possible without breaking the plastic/tarpaulin and thus giving access to oxygen.

There is today no online wireless surveillance system for biomass on the market, i.e. where the sensors are able to transmit data from a server to the farmer’s computer via the Internet or to his mobile phone.

SensSilage® makes it possible to survey physical and chemi-cal conditions in the silage without damaging the structure and the sealed cover.

The surveillance is automated so the software is responsible for the measurements and able to give information in case of abnormalities – either by mail or text message (SMS).

The Internet-based data analysis tool for processing the huge amounts of data collected by the sensors is able to ex-trapolate and predict the development of the silage quality.

The first online, wireless biomass surveillance – SensSilage® is unique
