Intransitive Phrasal Verbs

• Verb combined with a preposition-like word (known as a particle) together they form an idiom (an expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual meanings of its constituent elements, as kick the bucket or hang one's head.)

• The batter hit the ball. • Transitive verbs are action verbs that have an

object to receive that action. In the first sentence above, the direct object ball received the action of the verb hit.

and an intransitive verb (a verb that does not have a direct object or predicate complement).
