Sentinel
DESCRIPTION:The Sentinel is a simple, low cost, andrugged, single channel vibration protectionmonitor that is capable of operating in remote, unattended, and harshenvironments. The Sentinel VibrationMonitor is simple to install and operate. It can trigger built-in solid state relaysbased on configurable alarm levels.Additionally there is a built-in time delaythat prevents false trips, or triggering of the alarm functions from transient increasesin vibration level during normal operation.
The Sentinel is simple to install, and mountsdirectly onto the machine skid or bearinghousing to measure the vibration. Typicalapplications include vibration protectionmonitoring for cooling tower fans, centrifuges, and electric motors.
FEATURES:• Options for measuring vibration in two
axes or using an external accelerometer.• Measurement in acceleration or velocity.• Solid State Relay to switch AC or DC
Loads.
• Adjustable, variable filters to rejectunwanted signals and pass signals ofinterest.
• Buffered output via standard two-wireinternal connection or optional externalBNC connector.
• Global regulatory compliance approvals(refer to approvals in specifications).
• Two adjustable alarm levels.• 4-20mA output proportional to overall
vibration level for use with a panel meter,DCS, or other instrumentation.
APPLICATIONS:• Centrifuges• Crushers• Cooling Towers• Electric Motors• Pumps• Industrial Fans• Industrial Rotating Machinery
ConfigurationAlarm and Danger setpoints can be setlocally using a simple multi-meter.
The default settings (see Table 1) for allother parameters may be changed bytemporarily connecting a computer, viaserial port, and running the includedconfiguration program. Once changed thenew default settings are permanentlyretained in non-volatile memory.

Installing a Sentinel device involves the following tasks:
• Mounting the device onto anappropriate location on the machine
• Wiring the power supply
• Wiring the relays
• Configuring alarm threshold levels
The rugged, all-in-one constructionmakes the Sentinel particularly wellsuited for applications in harshenvironments such as machines in the oil and gas, cement, power orpetrochemical industries.
The single-channel Sentinel is ideal for field applications in which a simplemechanical vibration switch is sufficient, yet machinery protection is required on a continuous basis. The Sentinel can be configured as a standalone unit orintegrated with a control system via itsstandard 4-20mA or buffered outputs.
The Sentinel contains an internalaccelerometer to measure vibration in one of two standard axes, X or Z, asshown in figure 1. The X axis is parallelto the face of the unit and perpendicularto the direction of the mounting holes. The Z axis is perpendicular to the face ofthe unit. The mounted orientation of theSentinel is dictated by the requiredmeasurement axis.
