Server TechnologySolutions for the Data Center Equipment Cabinet
Sentry -48VDC provides the following functionality:
• Power Distribution : distribute dual power input feeds to multiple equipment units in a rack or cabinet. All models.
• Power Measurement : Extend network management capabilities and protect the investment in internetworking devices with SNMP traps and individual load sensing per output pair. Remote Power Manager (RPM) units only.
• Remote Power Control : Perform a remote reboot and fix “locked-up” or failing equipment. RPM units.
• Power Protection : GMT fuses, TPA fuses, TPC fuses and Circuit-Breakers provide per-output over-current and fault protection. Protection type varies by model.

• Input feed/Outlet On-Sense - Verifies voltage at each power input/outlet connection.
• External Temperature and Humidity Sense – makes sure that remote hardware operates only in optimal temperatures (up to 2); not available on 4820 and 4835
• SNMP Power Control – Supports use of SNMP set instructions for outlet level control, SNMP traps, Management Information Base (MIB) & Object Identification Tree (OIDTree) available on-line

• Any “master” XLS unit can be linked to an “expansion” XMS unit
• One IP address
• Reduce costs
• Grouping across devices pairs for simultaneous power up of multiple supply devices
• Provides redundant power sources for fail-safe operations
•Eliminates single point of failure (see diagram on slide 16)
How does a Sentry -48VDC Remote Power Manager Support Equipment?
Server TechnologySolutions for the Data Center Equipment Cabinet
This setup supports full redundancy and eliminates single point-of-failure concerns by allowing each Cisco power supply to connect and separate Sentry Remote Manager units.
Each Output Fused at: 40 ACisco Power Supply Output: 4000 W each
H-Tap used on each source to provide power to both input blocks on each Sentry -48 VDC Remote Power Manager.
XLS-to-XMS data link allows 8 switched outputs to be addressed through a single unified interface. All 6 output connections to the Cisco OSR-7609 may be grouped together such that one command controls all power delivered to both 4000 W Cisco power supplies.

Beginning with Benjamin Franklin, it was traditionally assumed that electricity flows from a positively charged region to a negatively charged region. The discovery of the electron corrected that. Electricity actually flows from a negatively charged region to a positively charged region; electrons move from the negative (-) to the positive (+).
Thusly, the negative (-) is the source, the positive (+) is the return, and the implications with respect to a Sentry -48VDC Remote Power Manager are:
• The negative (-) conductor from each Sentry output to each device must be electrically isolated
• Though not required, the positive (+) return output to each device may be electrically common.
Conversely, a positive (+) direct-current system would require that the positive (+) return to each device be electrically isolated and would allow the negative (-) connection to be common. A simple example of a positive (+) system is the electrical distribution in most automobiles. The negative (-) source of the 12V car battery is connected to the metal frame of the car and is common such that the negative terminal for each device (stereo, headlights, etc.) is easily attached to the frame at any point. The positive (+) terminal for each device is then individually conducted to the positive terminal of the battery. Fuses for each device are located on the individual conductors between each device and the positive terminal of the battery.

So why is it called “-48VDC”?
A common question is “can the Sentry -48VDC Remote Power Managers work with a +48VDC system?” The answer is NO.
Server TechnologySolutions for the Data Center Equipment Cabinet
• All Sentry Switched -48VDC Remote Power Managers are engineered for a -48VDC system. Of particular importance is the fact that the relay for each switched output is positioned on the negative terminal; only the negative (-) terminal of each output pair (+/-) is switched on/off. Additionally, both the load-measurement circuit and over-current protection for each device are also positioned on the negative (-) lines.
• The following simple wiring diagram illustrates the typical Sentry power distribution layout. Specifically, this diagram shows the basic distribution layout for one half of a Sentry 4870 unit.

· Relay A1 opens but the attached load continues to receive power from the the alternate path due to the common negative (-).
· Power continues to be delivered and the load increases on the alternate path.
· Similarly, if either fuse opens to clear a fault, the fault will ‘blow’ the other fuse.
