ThemeGyeonggyojang, the house where nationalist politician Kim Gu was assassinated
Story
Gyeonggyojang was the home of Kim Gu from November 1945 until his death in June 1949. The house was named after the nearby bridge “Gyeonggyo.”Also known by his pen name, Baekbeom, Kim Gu served as the president of the Provisional Government of Korea and committed himself to Korea’s independence and national unification after the liberation of Korea from Japan. Unfortunately, however, he was killed by An Du-Hui, who shot him three times on June 26, 1949.A Japanese-style, three-story granite building with one basement level, Gyeonggyojang was built during the Japanese colonial era and owned by the gold mine tycoon Choi Chang-Hak. After the liberation of Korea, however, the house was used as Kim Gu’s office and a place for the cabinet meetings of Korea’s provisional government. After the death of Kim Gu, Gyeonggyojang was used as the residence of Choi Chang-Hak, the embassy of Taiwan, and an office for the U.S. Army in Korea. At first, the house was called “Jukcheomjang,” but was later renamed “Gyeonggyojang” when Kim Gu began to use it as his office.

Theme A market with 100 years of history in downtown Seoul
Story
Opened in Jongno-gu in 1905, Gwangjang Market is Korea’s first permanent traditional market. Boasting over 100 years of history, Gwangjang Market features traditional Korean clothing shops and fabric stores at its center, where visitors can find virtually any type of clothing for each stage of life, from birth to death, ranging from baby wear to funeral shrouds. Many of the Hanbok shops in the market are family-owned businesses that have drawn customers generation after generation for over sixty years. The food court is one of the highlights of the market. In particular, the mini gimbap served here, dubbed “narcotic gimbap” because you cannot eat just one, may look humble, but it has become a delicacy in its own right. As its name implies, Gwangjang (meaning “to embrace far and wide”) Market greets people from all walks of life. This is a place where people freely strike up conversations with each other, blurring the line between shopkeepers and customers. This market is like a home to all the merchants here.
