LACKLAND ISD RECEIVES $3.7 MILLION DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION GRANT The Lackland Independent School District was notified this week that they were selected to receive a $3.7 million dollar construction grant from the Department of Education. Lackland ISD and more specifically Lackland Elementary currently utilize several buildings that are owned by the Department of Education. It is the goal of the DoE to turn over ownership of these buildings to the school district and they have agreed to pay for the renovation of these buildings before we take ownership. The renovations will include the main elementary gym and stage area. This excludes the restroom area, which we have committed to complete using local funds. We will also be renovating the elementary cafeteria to include the stage and kitchen area. The special education area will also be renovated along with the TRAC (old library) which will be configured to accommodate three classrooms but will also have the ability to be used as an open space for professional development and other campus activities. We would like to thank Mr. Will McDowell, Executive Director for Operations and Technology who coordinated with the Department of Education and worked long hours putting together the proposal. We also want to acknowledge Mrs. Rebecca Estrada who provided valuable assistance during the negotiations. We are appreciative of the Department of Education who guided us through this process. This grant will allow Lackland ISD to complete much needed renovations while also completing our new classroom and auditorium addition. We ask for your patience as we embark on this new journey. Meet Mrs. Day! By: Chloe Dockter

Mrs. Day is a new addition to the Stacey Faculty this year. She has taken the position as the second Spanish teacher.

As such, it's time for the Lackland district to be introduced to one of its new teachers. I interviewed Mrs. Day to find out a little about her.

Where are you from? Mrs. Day was born in Costa Rica, then lived both there and Guatemala until she moved to the U.S. at the age of eight. She lived in Colorado and California, then Corpus Christi, Texas. She has just

moved here from Corpus Christi. Why did you decide to become a Spanish Teacher?

She majored in Spanish at the University of Colorado. She decided to become of teacher of Spanish because she loves the Spanish language and enjoys working with young children. It

seemed like the obvious and optimum choice of career for her. What are your favorite things about being a teacher?

She says that she absolutely adores getting to know new students every year. Mrs. Day also loves the fact that every day on the job is a different experience.

What is the hardest part of teaching another language? According to Mrs. Day, she finds the most difficult part of teaching another language is getting her

students to understand that they don't necessarily need to know every word of the language to understand it.

How long have you been a teacher? Mrs. Day has been a teacher for fourteen years. She started teaching a bilingual first grade class,

then took a ten year break in order to stay home with her children, before returning to the career, beginning to teach middle and high school students.

Is Spanish your first language? Spanish was not her first language. She learned English first, but also learned Spanish as a child.

When she moved to the U.S. at the age of eight, she stopped using the language, and had to relearn it while at University.

Do you know any other languages? Mrs. Day took German class in high school, but says she doesn't remember very much of it.

Can you tell us a bit about your family? Mrs. Day is married. Her husband works for Healthcare Administration. She has three daughters,

aged nineteen, twenty-one, and twenty-four, as well as a grandson. Her family has two dogs. What is your favorite color?

Blue. Mrs. Day she loves blue because there are so many different shades of it.

That is a look at Mrs. Day. She is a lovely and sweet woman, and I hope she enjoys every day she spends at Stacey.

Calculating Mass, Volume, and Density in 6th grade

Students in Mrs. Torre’s 6th grade homeroom/science class calculated the

mass, volume, and density of two different “fun size” candy bars. They also

predicted which one would sink and which one would float based on the

calculated density of the object. This lab demonstrated a basic formula used

in not only science class, but in math class as well.

Young Scientists at Work Third graders in Mrs. Lawrence’s class this week became super

sleuths! They examined everyday objects such as

glue, markers, and lotion and tried to figure out what physical properties

(texture, composition, state of matter, etc.) they shared with each other.

Fantasy football is back in action at Lackland Elementary! The season got underway this past week, and students went

through their first round of stats. With the late start of school this year, we are using a generic team for the first two weeks

until students are comfortable with the stat process. Next week, after they complete the second round of their stats,

students will get to draft their own fantasy teams. Each week the top five scores will be listed in the newsletter and on the

fantasy football bulletin in the 5th/6th grade hall. Let’s all hope for a great football season!

September 6th, 2012 was the day that the 7th and 8th graders of Stacey Jr. /Sr. High School made history! This was the

first time Stacey Jr. /Sr. High School has EVER had a middle school volleyball match. After two very hard practices,

they had their first game against Charlotte.

The middle school matches are the best 2 out of 3. The 7th graders played really hard and took the Charlotte Lady

Trojans to 3 games. The tie breaker was a serving battle. Despite their best efforts, the Eagles fell 11-15. The 8th grade

team also played well together. They worked hard on their serving scoring approximately 50% of the time off their

serve. Unfortunately, the Lady Eagles fell to the Lady Trojans 20-25 and 22-25.

Please come out and support the 7th and 8th grade Lady Eagles on Monday the 17th at 5, 6 and 7. The JV and Varsity

Lady Eagles will be playing at home Friday the 14th at 4 and 5, and again on Tuesday the 18th at 5 and 6. We hope to

see you there!
