14 Blooming Good News - it’s spring!

Our September cover featuring the beautiful Sophie Van Den Akker - the face of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week (MSFW) sets the tone for the change in seasons. 3008Docklands writer Rebecca Howden includes a fantastic overview and interview with Sophie covering what is in store during MSFW as well as the colours and styles of spring fashion.

We understand the Docklands community has been concerned at the lack of community consultation to date regarding the provision and planning for the proposed library, community centre and school for Docklands. Dr Kathy Alexander, City of Melbourne CEO responds to these concerns on page 7.

It was a ride down Devil Gate Drive for me this month, interviewing the original rock chick, Suzi Quatro. Embarking on her Australian Tour this October and featuring her new album ‘Spotlight’ which takes listeners back to the basics and where most of us remember her from, ... no, not Leather Tuscadero, but Suzi’s raw, rock and roll roots.

We are really privileged to have professionals across many spectrums write for 3008Docklands each month imparting their

knowledge and insight on a range of topics from the family to finance. This month they excel once again with valuable advice on the volatile stock market and ways to keep positive, informed and calm in all areas of our lives.

We introduce the Pinker sisters who have worked tirelessly in organising the inaugural Melbourne Breast Cancer Bra Walk donating 100% of funds raised for Breast Cancer Network Australia. Please see page 19 for all the details, their story is a true testament to the spirit of family.

Lastly, September 4 is Father’s Day and we have 3 great opportunities for our readers to thrill Dad on his special day, as we invite you to literally throw him in the deep end - have cameras at the ready, this will be a shot for the pool room!!

A state-of-the-art, $220 million, police complex is proposed for Docklands with expressions of interest sought from developers to determine the appropriate site for the 27,00sqm facility. The new police complex will alleviate overcrowding and operational concerns at three of its current locations.

A spokesperson for Victoria Police confirmed for 3008Docklands that planning is underway to relocate more than 1600 staff based at 412 St Kilda Road (Crime and Intelligence and Covert Services Departments), 452 Flinders Street (Crime Department) and the Melbourne West Police Station at the Victoria Police Centre to one new complex to be built at Docklands.

The Department of Treasury and Finance and Victoria Police are seeking expressions of interest from building developers to participate in the evaluation of sites in the western precinct of the Melbourne CBD, within the boundaries of La Trobe Street,

Harbour Esplanade, Williams Street and the Yarra River.

Construction is due for completion by the end of 2014, and it is anticipated that staff will move into their new workplace in early 2015.

It has been almost three years since it stopped spinning but the Southern Star Observation Wheel is nearing the final stage of its rebuilding as engineers begin attaching sections of the outer rim.

While it would be a welcome surprise for retailers, visitors and residents if the Wheel was ready to spin some Christmas cheer by the end of the year, no official completion date has been set.

3008docklands was given the following comment by an official ING spokesperson on the progress on the Wheel this month.

“The replacement and re-build of the wheel is being undertaken under warranty by Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation.

The construction process is extremely intricate and highly influenced by adverse weather conditions, including rain, wind, hot and cold weather. This and various other challenges make it difficult for Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation to declare an opening date at this stage.”

Notwithstanding, installation of the wheel’s rim sections commenced on Saturday, 23 July. Installation of the rim will be followed by positioning of the 21 viewing cabins.

3008Docklands has approached Melbourne City Council in relation to the mounting concerns from residents regarding the current status of the proposed library, community centre and school for Docklands. In particular, the adequate provision of space, access and parking allowed in the planning process as well as, primarily, the size of the proposed facilities to cater for the long term needs of the growing community.

Docklands residents feel it is imperative they have the opportunity to put forward

their suggestions and raise their concerns during the planning process and want to know if, and when, a process of community consultation will commence.

We have received the following response from Dr Kathy Alexander, City of Melbourne, CEO:

as part of the Second decade for docklands project (d2), more than 3700 people were consulted about what they would like to see in docklands over the next decade.

One piece of community infrastructure that was strongly supported throughout the d2 consultations was a library and community centre for docklands.

Currently, City of Melbourne is working to ensure that we get the details of the docklands library and community centre project right.

we need a library and community centre in the right location so that we can provide the docklands community with a quality facility.

Once the Expression of interest period has been completed for the library and community centre, we’ll engage again with the community to discuss this important project further.

The Victorian Government is undertaking a feasibility study into a primary school in docklands. Schools are the responsibility of the department of Education.

3008Docklands is happy to put forward questions from the Docklands Community to the City of Melbourne in relation to this topic or any other you would like an answer to.

All questions should be received by the 10th of September to allow adequate time to receive a response. Please email [email protected]

The strange circumstances surrounding a mountain of cash found at a Docklands building in two related incidents has left Victorian police baffled.

Cleaners found $100,000 stacked in a disabled toilet bin and sanitary disposal unit at the ground floor of Channel Nine studios in 717 Bourke St. Security footage reportedly captured an unidentified man entering the disabled toilet with two bags and leaving about five hours later.

A week later a plumber accompanied by a detective unblocked from a drainpipe, bundles of 100 dollar notes worth thousands of dollars from the same building.

Senior Constable Marty Beveridge said the case is extremely unusual, as it is a very rare occurrence for such a large sum of money to be found dumped in a toilet.

“The police that attended the scene found pipes blocked and subsequently located a large amount of cash,” he said.

Melbourne Water Officials and detectives have examined the pipes at the Channel Nine

Building and the Bourke St Complex but it is still unknown as to why someone has dumped the stack of cash.

Senior Constable Beveridge said the money has to be tested to find out if it is real or counterfeit and he could not reveal how long this process would take or the next stages of investigation as it is a police matter.

“I have no idea if the notes are real. They will be tested and sent away to determine if they are real. It is an ongoing investigation. We are appealing for anyone with any information at all to contact crime stoppers,” he said.

Channel Nine has sparked controversy after reconstructing the footage of a man entering the disabled toilet at Docklands and dumping his money pile. A spokesman for the network reportedly told other media outlets it was a “production oversight” and was never intended to deceive or mislead.

The money is likely to be declared the proceeds of crime and will be seized by the State of Victoria.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au

new Parking technology implemented At doCklAndsNew parking technology continues to be rolled out across the City of Melbourne over the next month with a license plate recognition system introduced to Docklands on August 19.The introduction of the new technology across city areas includes in-ground sensors, license plate recognition and a pay-by-phone trial. The aim of introducing these technologies is to help make car parking spaces more readily available for shoppers, visitors and residents. While no significant changes to parking and traffic operation have been made in close to

30 years, this is a first step to modernising the system. The technology is new, but it is anticipated that motorists will notice very little difference. The only bonus is that a 5 minute grace period is given in areas where the new technology is operating and applies to vehicles parking for the duration of a bay’s maximum time limit.Further information is available at www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/ParkingTransportandRoads/Parking or by calling 9658 9658

Spring is here at last- and Melbourne Spring Fashion Week is the perfect way to kick off the celebrations. As we start to shed our heavy winter layers, this year’s spring fashion festival brings a touch of colour and excitement to the city, promising to inspire, invigorate, and above all, entertain.

MSFW is now in its 17th year, and has been well established as one of the highlights of the city’s fashion calendar. Showcasing the collections of new and emerging designers, MSFW attracts over 80,000 people each year, bringing the city to life with all the freshness and frivolity of the season.

Over 100 events make up this year’s expanded program. Along with glamorous runway shows and evening events, there are plenty of free activities open to all. City Square is set to transform into a vibrant hub of music, dance and runway fashions. Even the experience of shopping is given an extra dose of colour-the Look.Stop.Shop at MSFW program brings the city’s retail strips and laneway boutiques to life with a series of window displays and in-store installations exploring the theme ‘Taking a Journey.’

Leading the festivities is modelling sensation Sophie Van Den Akker- who promises there is plenty to look forward to. “Oh my goodness, there are so many great events,” she says. “The emerging designer exhibition is new to the program, as well as the Look.Stop.Shop tours. Not to mention the Alpha Salon, which is a treat for the men, with their own specialised style and grooming workshop.”

In her role as the face of MSFW, Sophie will grace the runway each night in the festival’s hallmark event, the MSFW Designer Series. Held at the Melbourne Town Hall over four nights, this spectacular runway event showcases the new spring collections from Australia’s finest designers- including some of Sophie’s all-time favourites, like Rachel Gilbert, Yeojin Bae and Green With Envy. “The best part of my job is definitely getting to working with such talented designers, as well as all the up-and-coming new talents,” Sophie says. “That’s something that really excites me.”

Being named the face of MSFW marks the anniversary of Sophie’s first year in the modelling industry. Since placing third in Australia’s Next Top Model last year,

Sophie’s classic looks and impeccable poise have caught the attention of designers and fashion editors all over the country. She has featured in a wide range of runway shows, advertising campaigns and high-profile magazine fashion editorials, and her unfaltering professionalism has earned her a reputation as one to watch.

“When you’re younger, you always play dress ups and things like that,” Sophie says. “But for me, I feel like fashion is something that found me. I sort of fell into modelling, and of course looking up to all the other models has been very inspirational.

“I definitely look up to people like Jessica Hart and Sarah Murdoch, I think they’re fantastic. I’d probably also like to follow in the footsteps of Jennifer Hawkins. I think all of them are really great role models.”

Despite being plunged into this new glamorous life, Sophie remains refresh-ingly down-to-earth. In her downtime, she loves getting outside and playing sports- so it’s fitting that she’s been recently named ambassador for iconic swimwear label Speedo. “To be honest, it feels like I live a bit of a double-life,” she says. “One minute, it feels like I just have the best job in the world, with all the travel and fashion industry events. Then the next minute I’m at home doing the cleaning!”

That mix of glamour and sophistication with the laidback nature of everyday life is part of the creative spirit of Australian fashion. Sophie says the unique style of Australian designers is increasingly capturing attention from overseas, and MSFW gives us a chance to celebrate the innovation and creativity that continue to flourish in our fashion scene.

“Our designers are very fresh,” she says. “We have such a wide and diverse range of styles- everything from hand-coloured printed and painted silks to lightweight wools. We can have a lot of colour, and we can also be very cool with sleek blacks and things like that. It’s all very diverse, and very fun.”

Melbourne Spring Fashion week runs from September 5th to 11th, 2011 at various locations throughout the city.

d yOuR Say... by Rose and Graham Mercer Docklands Residents

The proposed People Mover Train is a terrific idea akin to the best in Europe, but only if it is expanded to include all of Docklands. At present, the proposal is a short run around the harbour, a route already served by the free City Circle tram and the free Tourist Bus, so what’s the point?

Yes, our proposition below is optimistic; yes, it will take time to catch on; yes, it will need to be persistently promoted and will have to grow, but we believe if the enterprise starts too small, it won’t succeed, resulting in another failed good idea.

Make it a Hop-On-Hop-Off service that introduces visitors and locals to all that Docklands has to offer. My husband and I have lived here for only two years and yet we find ourselves surprising long-term residents when we mention what each precinct already has to offer.

Why not be brave, apply for funding to support such a development/attraction in Docklands and make it a world class tourist destination in addition to an entertaining look at our beautiful new area. Let’s embrace the whole of Docklands and show off what we have here - an exciting, edgy, modern and new place to live and work, with loads of underpinning history.

The People Mover Train concept flourishes in France where it is called Le Petit Train. It is an ideal way to gain familiarity and sample a new location while listening to the multi-lingual commentary. We often discovered surprising and treasured hide-aways we hadn’t known about.

Let’s do this well. We know it’s a tall order, and recognise that much needs to be ironed

out, but please consider this route and think about its possibilities.

Below is an example of a possible route and commentary:

STOP 1 - wONdERlaNd FuN PaRK A stop for Wonderland Fun Park, Southern Cross Wheel, Icehouse and Costco; later the new area developing nearby.

STOP 2 - waTERFRONT CiTy/NEw Quay Past Docklands Studios, Pearl River Road, along Waterfront City and stop by Dopel Way on the harbour. People can access cafes, restaurants, other services, shopping, Sunday Market. Include some information about the history here. Mention that several TV shows are filmed in the area, eg Rush and Winners and Losers.

STOP 3 - HaRBOuR ESPlaNadE/CENTRal PiERAlong this beautiful boulevard, provide access to Etihad Stadium, trams and La Trobe St, Central Pier and the restaurants/bars and proposed park on the end of the pier. Stunning views, street art and some information on the wetlands in front of the NAB.

STOP 4 - ViCTORia HaRBOuR aT CuMBERlaNd STHarbour Esplanade, turn right onto Victoria Harbour Promenade, accessing the cafes and bars (hopefully they will open for coffee and cake), some history including literary information such as Melbourne author Kerry Greenwood’s Phryne Fisher novels (soon an ABC TV series), one of which is called “Death at Victoria Dock”, access to Shed 4 when events are on. Visitors may walk further for spectacular photos along North Wharf, and later access to further developments. Access to the Urban Reforestation garden and Merchant Street.

STOP 5 - THE HuB Turn into Cumberland Street, then back along Bourke Street explaining the naming of the streets, the 5 and 6 star buildings, the reason behind the colours of the NAB building (ie celebrating the original docks and containers), right into Harbour Esplanade with a stop at The Hub giving access to the Docklands Park, barbecues, playground, bocce courts, the lovely treed park there (the only peaceful, serene place in Docklands where you can sit under trees like this). History about the original gas works here, the water tanks under the parkland, and using recycled water; ANZ, etc, more street art, like The Blowhole and Reed Vessel. (Will probably need some way to access the current tram tracks at the end of Harbour Esplanade to access Flinders St unless using Batman Hill Drive past Collins Square and ACE.)

STOP 6 - BaTMaN’S Hill/MiSSiON TO SEaFaRERSNew retail and open space at Collins Square, Goods Shed No.2, the extraordinary Mission, access to Village Street eateries, and a view of Bunjil the Eagle with history about the Wurrundjeri people. Access to World Trade Centre, walk to Casino and Southbank, visit the Police Museum (also Southern Cross Station).

STOP 7 - dFO SOuTH wHaRF Ideally, the train could cross the Yarra River at Siddeley Street’s bridge, affording an

easy and pleasant link to DFO, Convention Centre and the Hilton Melbourne South Wharf.

STOP 8 - yaRRa’S EdGE/POiNT PaRK Continue along River Esplanade to some of the best views of Docklands and marina, to Point Park, introducing visitors to the eateries and walks along this Docklands precinct.

STOP 7 - Retrace steps (or turn onto Lorimer Street) to again stop at DFO STOP 6 - Mission to Seafarers stop againSTOP 5 - Stop again at the HubSTOP 3 - Central Pier stop, then continue along Harbour Esplanade but up to Docklands Drive this time and access to shopping along there STOP 1 - Return to Wonderland Fun Parkand start.

One hundred participants from all over the world gathered by the ‘Cow up a Tree’ at Docklands on Wednesday 28th July for the opening of Urban Realities: Landscape Urbanism 3 Day Design Challenge.

Dressed in white waterproof coveralls and hard hats the teams spent the following 72 hours negotiating, designing, testing and constructing 10 public space sites throughout the Docklands precinct, all competing for the $25,000 prize money.

Urban Realities is a design challenge that invited teams with various architecture, design, art, environment and construction back grounds to design, construct and install projects in response to a brief in just 3 days. Each team was provided with a budget of $2000 in cash and $500 from the urban pantry (a hardware store of materials donated by sponsors), uniforms, accommodation, food and transport over the 3 days. A full day symposium was also held at BMW Edge Federation Square to launch the event and theoretically interrogate how they might approach the research agenda before participants immersed themselves into their selected design mission.

“How might we challenge the way we design and plan our cities?” was the research agenda for the event with the intent to explore how the design and

construction of alternative public spaces have the ability to offer adaptive and emergent strategies for the future of the Docklands.

The outcomes explored methods of how to approach the Docklands environmental conditions revealing innovative solutions for how to design with the wind and water. Such as the addition of intricate green pockets to the Docklands hard scape offering residents a piece of the project as they passed by or interactive play scape that diagnosed the public with their ‘Docklands disorder’.

Overall the event was a great success! Participant’s feedback has been extremely positive and highlighted the need for similar competitions to exist. “The competition is a wonderful opportunity for the designers to experiment in the public realm. If this is what can be achieved in just 3 days imagine what can be achieved with greater time, resources and consideration” Added Michael Lewarne.

The outcomes have brought much attention to Docklands desire for interactive, vibrant, human scale, public space solutions and we can only hope that now numerous possible design solutions have been revealed and something will soon come of it.

By Lisa QuittnerSuzi Quatro has sold over 50 million records worldwide in close to 50 years in the music business.Suzi was the most successful female artist of the entire Glam Rock period and is an acknowledged influence on many female rock musicians of yesteryear and today, including Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett and The Runaways. In The Spotlight is the brand new studio album from Suzi and also sees the reunion of Suzi

with Mike Chapman. A tour de force in British pop music in the 1970s and beyond. Mike Chapman, along with Nicky Chinn, produced major hits for Suzi, including Can The Can, 48 Crash and Devil Gate Drive. In The Spotlight goes back to the basics to where it all began, with good, hard and honest rock and roll.I was privileged to speak to Suzi on the eve of her Australian tour and found Suzi Quatro exactly as I expected to; down to earth, open and real. Still performing close to 70 shows a year worldwide; she shows no signs of slowing down at 61, “When I turn my back on the audience and shake my ass, and there is silence... I’ll stop.” your solo career started working with Mike Chapman, do you feel collaborating with Mike again on this album and tour that your career has gone full circle? It kind of feels that way. Mike and I have always understood each other and respect each other, so he is the best person for me to record with, it’s been so nice, it’s like coming home.what was the inspiration behind your latest album, in The Spotlight? It was getting back to the basics, and as Mike notes on the album, in every single female performer that has come along in the music

world since me, there has been a piece of me. That’s what he thinks and he felt it was about time that I claimed that, Mike doesn’t believe I am given enough credit, hence the album. ‘in The Spotlight’ has just been released here, were the cover tracks on this album, chosen based on the songs or based on the style of the artist?Mike actually wanted to have complete control with this album, he said he knew exactly which songs needed to be put on and which

musicians to use and that I just had to trust him, which I did. As Mike began sending me the ideas that he had for the album and I started listening I could see exactly where he was going with it. Basically, if Suzi Quatro was just starting out today in today’s climate, this is the type of album she would have done. I am really proud of it.Singing with angels is a bonus track on the album and a tribute you wrote for Elvis, how did Elvis impact your life and your style of music and performance? It started when I was 5 years old, I saw him on TV and I decided I was going to be him, despite how nuts that sounds, I didn’t even think about gender which is pretty key to my character. I don’t think about gender and I never have, I am just me doing what I do. I felt he kind of sat on my shoulder all the way through my career and just unbelievable circumstances, coincidences and experiences culminated in me writing this song. I went to Nashville with James Burton and The Jordanaires where we did the song it found its way onto the album. There never seemed to be the right album for it, and then this album came out and and I said, that’s it, it will be a bonus track.

do you believe in coincidences?Ah, well... I believe that everything happens for a reason, I don’t think there are any accidents, and I believe the energy of people (passed) hangs around, I really do. I can still feel the energy of Elvis; he has been sitting on my shoulder since day one.with your massive, classic hits during the 70’s, did you ever find it hard to break through with new songs and styles changing over the decades?I didn’t really stop and think about it, I was just always working. You get to a certain stage in your career and anything after that is just a bonus. I have sold over 50 million records, I am still out there doing what I do, I am still pulling in the people so I have been lucky, I have been fortunate. How many people get the chance to do their job of choice for close to 50 years! i believe you do 60 - 70 show a year on average, 20 alone on this australian tour, and you are already planning a 50th anniversary tour in 2014, what keeps your passion alive and can you ever see yourself hanging up your guitar?I love what I do, so why should I stop. I have spent my whole life learning how to be good at my craft. I will stop when I feel wrong up there on stage. Every time I go out on stage I have to prove myself again, it keeps me young, it keeps me fresh and I love entertaining people.your career has been celebrated on so many levels, as a performer, song writer, musician, tv and theatre actress, radio presenter , what do you believe has been the fundamental reason for such a long and successful career ? I think it because I am real. The image was not created, the person is not created. No one put a bass guitar on me and said ‘carry it like this, walk like this’ - everything about me is real and I think real lasts.looking back on all the years and considering the longevity of your career, would you have done anything differently? No, I don’t think so; I have always believed that the good and bad happen for a reason and you have to follow the path as it goes along. I have always been one to follow my instincts which I firmly, firmly believe in doing.

you are an original music icon that appeals across the generations; do you think there is anyone in the music industry today that has the talent to follow in your footsteps with a career spanning 50 years to date? That’s a tough one; there are certainly some big girls around now, think of how huge Lady Gaga is. The name that springs to mind, is Amy Winehouse she had talent plus, plus, plus - but now she’s gone. I think Adele is one of the best singers around at the moment; she has real talent because she doesn’t do anything but sing, she doesn’t have to do anything else but sing.Monday 3rd October, 2011 - 7:30pm Palais Theatre, St Kilda. Premiering at Collingwood Underground Theatre this month is Mill Boys, a play adapted from James Ricks novel “11 months in Bunbury.” The contemporary working class play written by Joel Beasant and directed by Yma Zammit-Ross tells the story of a group of sawmill workers in Western Australia.

Anticipated to be a raw and engaging play about the lives of Aussie blokes openly expressing their feelings, this production gives a rare insight into the male world and mind. It unveils the lives of characters that feel frustrated and trapped in their daily lives while having to deal with the pressures of technological change. It is a play about love, reconciling, mateship and trying to make something of one’s life even when all of the odds feel rough. Refreshingly frank and unruly characters that speak with the Aussie twang offer a humorous insight into the lives of typical blokes living in timber communities.

Mill Boys stars 2010 The National Theatre graduate Tom Cuthbert-Sayers as Jim and Robin Brown as Nelson with a supporting cast of eleven. 27-year-old Docklands resident Cameron Wise plays the role of Phil. “I play the role of Phil who is a bar man. He is a buoyant, level-headed larrikin that is a bit crazy. Phil is the type of guy who looks after his mates and controls situations,” Cameron says.

Cameron currently leads a full-on life working in the property industry as well as being an accomplished cyclist, works at a café on weekends and is involved in range of sports. After coming back from overseas last month, he wanted a new challenge and decided to pursue acting. “I’m a bit of a loud, boisterous person and I like to meet similar people. I wanted a new challenge and so I was lucky to get a fun, small role in the play. I really didn’t know what to expect but knew that I wanted to try something new and it has been an interesting and fun experience,” he says.

Cameron came across an advertisement looking for cast members. “I was expecting they would want someone with experience but I gave the number a call and was lucky to be given a part,” he says.

Cameron explained how the characters in Mill Boys are a realistic portrayal of most

Australian men. “The play is not a glossy version of how men are but instead it is a raw, real version of Aussie issues and swearing is not censored. It is about relationships between guys. Often men only connect through getting drunk but this play is about men that talk to each other and express their feelings,” he says.

The producers of the play have entered into an arrangement with the Collingwood Housing Estate Arts Committee to provide

those living on the Housing Estate to be involved in the production in order to give these residents a chance to develop their skills and be part of a community production.

Docklands is becoming an inner city community that is becoming home to key workers, people with a disability and others who struggle to find a home in the private rental market.

The precinct’s inclusiveness was confirmed on August 10th with the opening of The Mariner, a significant, high quality yet affordable housing development in New Quay. The $39 million development was officially launched by the Victorian Minister for Housing, the Hon. Wendy Lovell.

The project was delivered by Housing Choices Australia, a leading national housing association, in partnership with Department of Human Services and builders MAB Corporation.

The 113-unit apartment complex was partly funded under the Nation Building program which contributed $22.9 million. The sale of 28 apartments to the private sector contributed to fund the development of 85 affordable housing units.

With The Mariner’s location close to public transport, employment opportunities, shops and community services nearby ensures tenants are set up to lead successful, productive lives. It building is an 8.5 NatHERS energy rated property with

nautical themed décor, The Mariner houses a balanced mix of tenants who are in fulltime employment, studying and on moderate to low incomes. It also includes seven customised disability units.

In 2009, Housing Choices Australia developed The Merchant at Docklands, home to 92 key low income city workers and widely regarded as the most innovative affordable housing project in Australia.

Housing Choices Australia CEO Michael Lennon said: “Our developments demonstrate that people who cannot find or afford a home in the private rental market, let alone in Docklands, can be housed in high quality dwellings that are indistinguishable from their neighbours and can live alongside others in the community.”

The recent volatility in the sharemarket has caused many people to wonder whether we’re now faced by the ‘Global Financial Crisis - Mk 2’. I’ve worked in the financial industry in various capacities since 1983, and have encountered many episodes of panic before, eg:

- The sharemarket crash of 1987; - The asian Financial Crisis 1997; - The dotcom Crash of 2000; and - The Global Financial Crisis of 2008/’09.

Despite this experience, the wild swings between greed (ie share prices rising sharply) and fear (the same prices falling) from one day to the next exhibited by the American markets in particular during August have no precedent in the last few decades. Given that more investors than ever are taking a direct interest in their own superannuation accounts, how should the current volatility be best handled?

First, cash is always king in such markets. Although I think there’s now a reasonable chance official interest rates will fall in coming months, banks are still offering very reasonable term deposits that also allow investors to sleep well at night.

Second, a bit of cash set aside allows one to buy extra shares (if that’s your want) on those terrible days when the market goes into a tailspin. Given that superannuation is by definition a long term investment, buying on the very bad days can enhance returns.

Third, if shares in your fund have not performed well, don’t worry too much. Provided you invest in well run companies with solid business models, in time the market will tend to move back towards their true worth.

Fourth, having said this, speculative stocks are generally not the ideal things to own when the market becomes paralysed by fear. Such shares often suffer from liquidity problems when too many unhappy investors try and head for exit at once. In contrast, no matter how bad

things get, shareholders in Telstra or Rio Tinto, for example, know they can always sell out if the situation demands it.

Finally, don’t ever become afraid of looking at your super fund and making rational and objective decisions about it. Far too many investors I know become overly emotional when they read headlines in the newspaper like ‘Market Meltdown’ and ‘Billions Lost’. The popular press has a vested interest in making market volatility seem as bad as possible, as this is what sells papers. In reality, however, the situation is rarely as bad as that depicted by the headlines.

No one knows when the current bout of nervousness will end. It may stop when, as hoped, the RBA decides to cut rates. Alternatively, business confidence might improve if the Australian Government decides to drop its unpopular carbon tax. A second look at the list of market crises mentioned above suggests that while panic is relatively common in financial circles, in between crashes there are usually many years of calm, stability and profitability which are the true drivers of longer term gains in superannuation.

Walk past any inner city or Docklands café on a weekday and you’ll no doubt see quite a number of people conducting business meetings.

While Melbourne has a very strong café culture, how do regular business meetings in (sometimes) noisy or overcrowded cafés reflect on the professionalism of the individual & /or the company they represent? Such an informal setting is fantastic to establish or build on existing relationships; however is it really conducive to getting things signed on the dotted line?

A professional image instills confidence in your clients and can go a long way to making or

breaking a deal. Unfortunately, many find themselves without the space they need when they need it. Hiring a boardroom or meeting room is a good back up option, and is more affordable than you might think. In 710 Collins Street Docklands professional, fully equipped corporate meeting space is available to hire by the hour or even the whole day, and it comes complete with a receptionist to meet and greet along with all the other equipment & services you might expect. 1) implement a Recycle Bin System Put in place a multiple recycle/waste bin system with separate units to collect paper, glass, plastic and food scraps. Place a paper recycling bin at everyone’s desk and make sure it goes into the recycling system and not into general waste.2) Green Power Many Australian electricity retailers offer the option for customers to receive energy only from renewable sources such as solar, wind and geothermal. By making the switch, you save on emissions and drive demand for renewable energy. 3) Green Team Establish a ‘Green Office’ team or committee to implement ongoing environmental sustainability strategies for ongoing business practices. Encourage everyone to get involved and submit their ideas and - a competition with a green prize for the winner will get the ideas flowing.4) ByO Mug Many coffee shops that service large office buildings are happy for you to bring your own mug - just think of how many disposable cups you’ll save from becoming waste over the course of the year.5) discourage Plastic Cups and Bottles Discourage the use of plastic & paper cups and plastic bottles. Have enough crockery and glasses available for staff and visitors. Install an efficient, under-sink water filter system. Ditch the plastic water bottles and purchase reusable stainless steel bottles for your team branded with your company logo.6) Fill your dishwasher Run the dishwasher when it’s full and use the economy cycle - this uses far less water and

What a world we are living in...

Part of my role as Financial Adviser to my clients is to field questions regarding the economy domestically and around the world. Everything from sovereign debt, interest rates, exchange rates, employment and the list goes on. Of course these factors are ultimately what will drive sharemarket performance in Australia and overseas.

Unfortunately I don’t have the answer, I am not an Economist. However, I take solace in the fact that they don’t know either. One might describe the job of an Economist is to explain why the predictions of yesterday didn’t come true today. Never a more accurate statement.

With so many factors affecting world markets at the moment it’s unrealistic to expect anyone to have the answers and no one has a crystal ball. What I am about to cover is not rocket science and many of you will have read it before, but in times of hysteria emotion takes charge and rational thinking goes out the window.

So here they are, the fundamentals of investing:

- “Time in the market”, not “timing the market”: It’s impossible to know when markets have reached their highest and lowest points. Ultimately, if you try to pick either you’ll get burnt. However, over the long term markets will recover their losses and continue to grow.

- act with your head, not your heart: Following on from the point above, common sense will always tell you selling an investment when it has fallen in value is a bad idea, particularly if the cause of that fall is market driven and not related to company performance. But markets are driven by emotion, which leads to selling on the down and buying on the up. If you take Warren Buffet’s lead you would “sell when others are greedy and buy when others are fearful”.

- Buy quality: If you like to gamble, then you may want to skip this paragraph. History has shown us that if you purchase investments that have a long standing track record of capital growth and income generation over the long term you will do just fine, in good and bad times.

- diversify: Whether it be across different asset classes such as shares, property and fixed interest, or a spread across different investments within the asset class, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Not every investment will be a winner, accept that. But for heaven’s sake do not have everything you own invested in it.

implement a stringent re-balance strategy: Now that your portfolio is diversified, you must now monitor its performance. Not all asset classes will perform simultaneously. If one asset class outperforms, consider taking profits and re-investing into

underperforming asset classes. The result will be you are deliberately selling at the top and buying at the bottom.

Final comment: This is not a ‘normal’ market. Smoother waters are ahead. Do your best to stay calm. Sometimes the best action, is to take no action.

BiddERS aNNOuNCEd FOR dEVElOPMENT OF laST uNCONTRaCTEd PaRCEl OF laNd aT dOCKlaNdSIn February of this year Minister for Planning, Matthew Guy called for Registrations of Interest (ROI) to develop the last remaining uncontracted land parcel at Docklands citing the opportunity as exceptional for mixed-use development located in such close proximity to the CBD.

The two hectare site, with a prestigious Collins Street address, is also prime due to its Flinders Street frontage, air rights above Wurundjeri Way and situated nearby to Southern Cross Station.

“Development of this site will help connect the developing areas of Docklands to Southbank and the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre as well as enhancing pedestrian amenity throughout this key linkage,” Mr Guy said.

Minister Matthew Guy recently announced the four bidders had been chosen from eight that had submitted an Expression of Interest.

“Each of the Expressions of Interest was evaluated taking into account design, environmental initiatives, community infrastructure, public art, financial strength, delivery capacity, relevant project experience, strength of consultant teams, management of rail and road interfaces, and understanding of the state’s vision for Docklands,” Mr Guy said.

Australis Consortium (comprising Equiset Developments Pty Ltd and Australand Holdings Limited); Grocon Property Developments Pty Ltd and Mirvac Victoria Pty Ltd; Leighton Properties (Vic) Pty Ltd; and Lend Lease Development Pty Ltd will compete for the right to develop the two hectare site.

The bidders each have until 26 October this year to prepare their proposal in accordance with VicUrban’s Request for Proposal documentation.

A spokesperson for the Minister’s Office could not confirm or deny the intended use for this site.

In 2011 it is estimated that 14,300 women and men in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer, making it the most common cancer for women. While this is an alarming number, it is important to remember that most women survive breast cancer, with statistics showing the 5 year survival rate for women diagnosed with breast cancer is 88% with many women living long and full lives beyond this period.

Fundraising to provide awareness and research of the disease has been instrumental

in early diagnosis which ultimately saves lives; in addition, fundraising has allowed organisations such as Breast Cancer Network Australia to provide vital support for individuals and families living with breast cancer.

Among the wonderful people that give of their time to raise funds and awareness are the Pinker sisters, Sue, Catherine and Kim who understand, first hand the emotions and initial fear associated with contracting breast cancer. In 2007 and at just 31, Kim was diagnosed with breast cancer.

The Pinker sisters are showing their support and commitment to breast cancer awareness and this October invite you to take part in an event they have organised and planned themselves, the first ever, Melbourne Breast Cancer Bra Walk, with all funds raised from this event going directly to Breast Cancer Network Australia.

Sue, the event coordinator, concedes that organising this event has been an emotional challenge for the sisters, but they are passionate about delivering this event to the community and highlighting that ‘prevention needs attention’. “Any obstacles we have experienced while organising this event have been overcome by our determination and understanding of the hardships of breast cancer on a personal level” adds Sue.

The Breast Cancer Bra Walk is family event which includes a 2.5 km walk starting and finishing at Federation Square. As part of the fun, participants are asked to create and wear a bra in an unusual way using pink and blue themes. As this is a family friendly event, no skin exposure is preferred and

prizes are awarded on the day for the most creative designs.

3008Docklands is proud to support this inaugural event and we commend the passion and dedication of the Pinker sisters. Please show your support, with only 1000 tickets available, get online now and register. All proceeds go directly to Breast Cancer Network Australia.

We all like to spend time with positive people. The ones who always look on the bright side with their glasses half full. On the other hand, you have negative people, who you feel physically and emotionally drained by whenever you are around them.

So what makes a positive person and how do you become one? It’s actually as simple as choosing to use affirming language. Our thoughts and the words we speak have the ability to lift energy levels, or decrease them. The way we say things can be either encouraging or depreciating. The words we think and chose to use tell us and others a lot about our attitudes.

When someone asks how you are, how do you usually respond? Do you say “not bad”? Subconsciously, all we and the other person are hearing is the word “bad”. Why not try “I’m well”.

If someone thanks you, do you say “no problem”? Again, all we are hearing subconsciously is the word “problem”. Why not try “it’s a pleasure” or “you’re welcome”. It’s not just the person you are responding to that will pick up on your positivity. You will feel better too.

Positive language is not about pretending everything is perfect. It’s about choosing to describe things and situations in a way that is energy enhancing. “This is too hard” can be reworded as “this is a challenge”. “I hate that TV show” can be said as “That show is not my favourite”. “That person is an idiot” becomes “that person is not so easy to work with.” And “I can’t afford it” can be changed to “I’m saving up for that”.

The way we speak to our children is really important for the development of their self-esteem. If you say to them “don’t spill that drink” all they are hearing is “spill that drink”. You could try instead “be careful with that” or “use both hands”.

Instead of “you’re too little to do that”, why not try “when you’re bigger you can learn to do that”. Both ways are getting the same message across, but the second, more positive way is encouraging to the child and their development.

The words we chose to use can also have an impact on our physical wellbeing. Often you find people who constantly describe things as “a pain in the neck” have neck pain. Our body is very literal, and if you tell it often enough that it has a pain, it will soon develop one. Another common phrase amongst people, who experience headaches, is that something is “doing their head in”.

It is not always easy to change your language instantly, but the first step is to really monitor the thoughts you have and the words you use. If you catch yourself thinking or saying something that is less than encouraging, rephrase it and try again. Get your kids involved and make a game of it. You will find that after a while it becomes easier and eventually it will become a natural habit.

“Keep your thoughts positive because your thoughts become your words. Keep your words positive because your words become your behaviour. Keep your behaviour positive because your behaviour becomes your habits. Keep your habits positive because your habits become your values. Keep your values positive because your values become your destiny.” - Mahatma Gandhi

Families contact me for a variety of different reasons and difficulties. Many parents see me for advice and support on helping their child or teen work through some challenges.

One of the most common challenges I see in young people today is the concept of identity - who they are, where they are going, what their purpose is and what they value.

what exactly is psychotherapy, what is involved and how does it provide benefit or clarity to your clients?

Psychotherapy is a fancy name for therapy and counselling, which is a process of helping an individual or family gain insight into their challenges and working towards a resolution, sense of peace and fulfillment. By talking and listening, to not only a professional counsellor but also each other in a safe and non-judgemental environment, it gives individuals and families the time to sort out personal and/or relationship issues.

what inspired your interest in working with children, teens and families?

My interest started when I did a placement in a school when I was undergoing my training. I just felt that working with children, teens and families was the place I needed to be and I felt the most comfortable in.

you have worked with families for many years as a Psychotherapist and Family

Counsellor, did becoming a parent yourself change your understanding or views on the issues that your clients were experiencing within the family unit?

Absolutely! Being a parent now myself has given me a new appreciation, understanding and perspective of what it means to be a parent and have children. I have a few years still until I reach the teenage years. (sigh of relief)

you have started a fabulous blog ‘The Parenting Files’ which discusses literally everything to do with the trials and tribulations of parenting, what is your aim and what do you want people to take away from visiting your blog?

Thanks, yes, the parenting files are a place for all things relating to parenting and family matters, from the serious stuff to the not so serious stuff, discussed with a little quirky humour as well. I will also now be uploading all my articles from 3008docklands on the site as well. I want parents to be able to get information, advice and support from the site and feel they are able to share their experiences as well. I also want to learn from them.

Can people contribute their ideas and ask questions at ‘The Parenting Files’?

Absolutely, this is what it is all about! To share ideas, ask questions and have a conversation. And any specific questions or topics that people want me to discuss can always come to me directly.

For all things parenting and family matters, from relationships, challenges, hot topical debates, wellness and advice. Check out Tahlia’s new blog www.theparentingfiles.com.au and join her on facebook at www.facebook.com/pages/the-parenting-files/147672988645512

Preparing for the future is exciting - but it can also be an anxious time for students and their families. After all, there are so many students competing to get into so many different tertiary courses. Maybe you have just missed out on a university place. Or maybe you are simply not sure exactly what career you want. Maybe you are just not ready for the demands of university life.

Melbourne’s Taylors UniLink could be the answer. It is a new concept in university preparation that offers government- accredited higher education diplomas in Business and IT. Many other available diploma courses force students to choose a university and then enrol in a course that will lead them into that university. But Taylors UniLink takes a different approach.

It allows students to decide at the end of the diploma which university will best

meet their aspirations. And for those who do know what they want to do before starting, a package offer may be possible - a conditional letter of offer from their chosen university. Taylors UniLink has negotiated credit arrangements with 14 universities in Australia (four of them offering package offers).

Study Group Australia delivers the new Taylors UniLink Diplomas. Study Group Australia is also the organisation behind the well-known Taylors College. The Campus Director, Tony Cranshaw, says that Taylors UniLink, which took its first students in October last year, appeals to a specific group of students who may not feel entirely confident in approaching university studies.

“Getting into university is just the beginning of a demanding academic journey, and many students are ill-prepared for the

challenges of university study when they get there - that’s why quite a few students don’t finish their degree. In the Taylors UniLink program we have developed specific subjects to explicitly and systematically address the skills needed to succeed. Graduates of Taylors UniLink will be confident and ready to meet the challenges of undergraduate study,” says Mr Cranshaw.

Mr Cranshaw adds that Taylors College students have an enviable record of outstanding results. “Throughout Taylors College we have provided academically rigorous preparation for many years to many students, who have gone on to excel at many Australian universities. All Australian universities know Taylors College.

“In most cases, successful graduates of Taylors UniLink will be able to enrol into second year at university, since Taylors UniLink courses are equivalent first-year university courses.” Mr Cranshaw concludes the Taylors UniLink Diploma not only prepares students academically for the

university course they want, but also addresses other needs, particularly those of international students.TaylORS UNILINK
