WAIHI EAST SCHOOL SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 30/2014 24 September 2014

Kia ora We have some excited tamariki getting organized for the school disco tomorrow night. The theme is come dressed in something starting with the first letter of your name. We look forward to a fun night with lots of prizes to be handed out. A huge thank you to Alex who is coordinating this event on behalf of Roopu and MAD. There are some hangi tickets still available. Come and get a kai and watch our children enjoy their evening. In this weeks Waihi Leader we are advertising our school cleaning job. Our thanks to Murray who has been our very capable cleaner to date. We wish Murray well with his new endeavors. If you know of anyone who can work 3.30-5.30pm Monday to Friday, please get them to apply. Details are in the local paper. Larn Wilkinson from Mitai (his new consultancy company) is working at Waihi East School next term. His first project is leadership growth using traditional rakau with our lads, and a second project is waka ama training in readiness for a cluster competition. Year five and six children who wish to participate need to write a letter of application due this week. Larn is an amazing resource. We are very excited to work alongside him. Cool Kids invitations are going home this week. Remember this is the afternoon where tamariki can bring cool bikes, cars and special things to school to enjoy. One idea shared in the staffroom was bring a kite to school, the weather certainly is aligning to this type of activity. This Friday is not a mufti day, please send all children dressed in uniform. Mike Bellamy is all set to build our bike track these holidays. We are very excited about this project. The Bike On Trust has already donated 210 helmets to our school and each child will receive a helmet to keep at school before the track officially opens on the 15th of October. Fifty bikes are on order, in a variety of sizes that all children can enjoy. We are seeking donations of balance bikes. If you have one you would like to share, please let us know. The Board of Trustees are seeking your opinion about having a bee hive situated by the car park. This is a student led initiative. What do you think? Please let us know. A big, big big welcome back to Mr Cowan. Ross has been off site for two weeks. Its great to have you back. Thank you to David Dixon who relieved at school in Ross’s absence. Lastly a HUGE thank you to those parents who are positive contributors to our school. Your positive words and mahi in our community inspire staff. Enjoy your spring break with tamariki. We look forward to your positive contribution to our awesome school in term four. Nga mihi nui, Emily ([email protected])

Rippa

The rippa team had a very successful trip to Wellington coming in a very respectable 6th place

nationally. We have thanked Phil for his outstanding skills and for leading an amazing group of

students in a sporting experience.

All EOTC/risk management paperwork was completed before leaving. Sue coordinated all

activities and finances. The Board congratulates Phil, Sue, the team and their families.

Accelerated Literacy Learning (ALL)

This group is coming to a close, with our 15 weeks finishing off in week 10. This program,

alongside classroom teaching has been hugely effective and in our view, time well spent. Children

have made significant gains in their reading levels, hitting our goals, and putting them in a position

to reach National Standards by their anniversary dates. We are looking to duplicate this process

in some form next year, but in a wider setting.

As part of our contract with the Ministry of Education, Briar and Emily will present in Rotorua to

facilitators and colleagues. Briar is completing our progress report to the Ministry of Education.

We have applied to continue this programme in 2015.

Due to the success of this programme, Reading Recovery will be put on hold for 2015 and the

Accelerated Literacy Learning programme will be extended using Board of Trustee funding.

Staffing 2015

We have received the Ministry of Education staffing levels for 2015. Two teaching positions will

be advertised, a legal requirement. We currently have three fixed term teachers in the school.

The Board hopes that these fixed term teachers will apply for these positions.

Fort Playground

A huge thank you to Ross for coordinating the paint work of our fort, and David Dixon for spray

painting the structure. Our playground looks amazing.

Chocolates

We have closed the chocolate fundraiser and are awaiting money and/or chocolates from 18

whanau. 44 boxes are unsold. These will be sold from the office, and when appropriate, at

fundraisers.

MAD (Make a Difference) Group/Roopu Fundraiser

The disco is all in hand. Roopu and MAD will share the profit. I appreciate the ideas generated by

this group and how they are very quick to support new initiatives.

Health and Safety Check

Areas that have been addressed this month:

New tap on the staff room hot water cylinder.

Painted yellow strips where the concrete is uneven/is a step.

Hall and room 9 require safety strips on the edge of the steps. These are on back order.

New evacuation lists to be placed in classrooms.

Bikes in Schools

Invitations are in the process of being sent out for our grand opening on the 15th October at

11am. Mike Bellamy will undertake this project during the school spring break.

ERO

ERO was an extremely positive experience. We were able to have conversations/discussions points

leading to improved outcomes. Staff felt safe in sharing their knowledge and being open to next

steps.

As a Board we are starting to consider how we are going to develop n new school vision that is

reflective of our whanau and new initiatives in education. A consultant will support this

development over the next year. The Board will also continue to refine key Policies.

Bees

After receiving a letter from Izzie and I’lah the Board now seeks whanau feedback about having

a hive of bees at school. Like with the Country Calendar programme viewed earlier in the year, a

wind mat cloth will be placed around the hive as a barrier to children.

Kind Regards

Donna, Seton, Alex, Tineke, Julie, Peter and Emily

E*il

Dearmembers try U a 5 *We have a problem that we would like to share with you. Last week, +we learnt that the bee population is reducing around the world. This is *because some people are using harmful sprays on the plants and Tflowers that the bees are collecting nectar from. Also, due to human #activities, paddocks have turned into cities, towns and roads. This #1nmeans the bees are struggling to find, collect and store food for tt"i, flFfamities. tg

We have learnt that bees are very irnportant insects because we need f; \ t+

them to pollinate fruit. Fruit provides us with important vitamins and *nutrients. They also make delicious honey which is very good for us. We Tneed bees more than they need us! f

we would like to ask if waihi East School would be allowed to have m*

lzzie and l'lah have written the above letter to the Board of Trustees asking if Waihi East School will allow Bee hives atschool. They will be behind a high netting screen in the staff car park. They have been in contact with the Ministry ofEducation and have gained their support. The Board would like to know how the school community feels about bee hives at school. please fill out below and returnto the school office tomorrow. We would like / not like to have bee hives at school.
