President’s Message

IES NSW - Sidelights September / October 2015Follow us on:

This year, the UN International Year of Light and the 85th anniversary of the IESANZ, a year that has really been a battle to provide yet another premier annual awards function; and what a (k)night - black and white!

A very sincere thank you to our major sponsors:

Gerard Lighting Group,iGuzzini,3S Lighting Pty Ltd, and Philips Lighting.

Sponsors without whom the night would not have been possible and most likely somewhat more austere: coals in a brazier in the park for warmth and keep out the damp, lamb on a spit and some jugs of ale and perhaps a joker or two instead of the magnicent STAR event centre, a banquet with MC Adam Spencer and comedian Akmal.

A hearty congratulations to all of the awards winners and also to all those that submitted an entry into this year’s various lighting awards, a sincere thank you for your participation, your time and eort and the best of luck next year.

Thank you to the award judges, for those evenings and time away from families to make all of this possible. Special acknowledgement goes to Ibby Kanalas, Bettina Easton, James Vlassis and Ales Vasenda, although not forgetting the other CMC members who provide freely of their spare time.

Next year the theme will be Crooners & Cocktails. No matter what the diculties with the venue it will not be on the long weekend in October! We look forward to your continuing support in 2016 and remain in your service and God willing, continuing the crusade.

Gerard Lighting creates a world class innovative lighting solution for International Towers Sydney, Barangaroo.

The InterT LED Commercial LED Luminaire from Gerard Lighting has set the standard in LED Luminaires for Commercial Applications.

Specifically designed for International Towers Sydney, Barangaroo, the Gerard Lighting Engineering team worked closely with Lendlease, and Consultant Norman Disney Young to meet the brief to provide a highly energy efficient luminaire that was not only functional and sustainable but aesthetically designed to complement its environment.

The InterT LED luminaire was developed with form and function in mind. Low level side light ambient panels offer a contrast to the main lighting source and give a sense of warmth to its surroundings. With an efficacy of > 90lm/w and UGR < 19, the InterT LED is highly efficient. The result, a world-class luminaire that brilliantly illuminates one of Australia’s most sustainable high rise commercial precincts.

Award of Excellence

2015 recipient: enLighten Luminaire: Chamaeleon III

“This emergency luminaire has proven that it is a market acceptable product. The manufacturer had seen that there were features that needed to be improved in this type of tting and has incorporated them in to this tting such as self-test, Wi-Fi communications and considering the requirements of the electrical contractor with installation via a easy to install key lockable mounting plate and quick access to replace battery. An excellent preforming product.”

“This is a whole new approach in thermal management. The specially designed holes in the heatsink cause a tornado eect to cool the LEDs (around 50,000 lumens) and drivers. Needs to be seen how well it works. A lot of design work has gone into getting this just right and is a worthy of an award of excellence.”

“A step up in the design of a LED troer. This is low line led troer with excellent light output and low UGR. It has a row of lower lit LEDs around the sides so as not to go from a dark area straight to a high brightness LEDs and therefore more pleasing to the eye. Not just a box with light but a very attractive tting with good performance well worthy of this award.”

“A design that worked, looked good, well thought out in its design. In the design brief it talked about “how it was going to be used in palms and dierent types of plants the design of the luminaire and the way it was suspended with the output of the luminaire showed that it would work in this application. Good design to suit the application.”

“Very astute replacement of old metal halide light source to ecient LED in the existing art deco heritage pendants in the ground oor main public foyer. The retrotting of the old heritage pendants had been carried out to excellent outcome to an extent that the judges could not tell the dierence in the luminance appearance and the illuminance levels of the area between the upgraded pendants and the remaining heritage ttings yet to be upgraded. Overall an excellent, sensitive restoration and reinterpretation of heritage lighting. “Commendable achievement for such a small budget. The use of small lights unied the walkway with the twinkling Newcastle skyline. It is evident on the night of our visit that this bridge has been embraced by the community and is a good example of how thinking outside the box can intensify the user’s experience. Generous contribution to the public domain and subtly engaging the spirit of Anzacs.”

Award of Commendation

2015 recipient: Haron Robson / LightmattersProject: Liverpool Catholic Club - Multistorey Carpark

Suppliers / Other Credits: 3S Lighting, Jade Cross (Megabay & Ligman), Lighting Group, Philips Dynalite, Versalux and Zumtobel

“Encouraging to see young lighting designers pushing boundaries of the ordinary. In this particular case a car park. A clever and eective lighting solution that exceeded the expectations of their client’s brief for a “vivid way nding beacon”.Innovative solution to an otherwise typically bland concrete above ground carpark, a solution not just based on complying to standards but an artistic touch.”
